After DMK MP A Raja’s Comments On VCK, Cadres Clash In Perambalur

After DMK MP A Raja's Comments On VCK, Cadres Clash In Perambalur

Tension erupted near the Kunnam bus stand in Perambalur district following a confrontation between cadres of the DMK and the VCK, amid growing political friction between the two alliance parties.

The clash comes in the backdrop of recent political tensions after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) extended support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government. The move triggered criticism from sections within the DMK, with several party functionaries openly expressing displeasure.

The situation escalated further after DMK deputy general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP A. Raja posted sharp remarks on social media last week, drawing strong objections from VCK cadres. In response, VCK members had announced plans to stage a protest in front of Raja’s office, though the agitation was later withdrawn.

Fresh tensions emerged when VCK cadres sought police permission to hold a protest near the Kunnam bus stand condemning the remarks against their party. Police reportedly denied permission for the demonstration. DMK cadres also sought permission for a counter-protest, which was similarly rejected by authorities.

Despite the denial of permission, supporters from both parties gathered in large numbers near the bus stand area, creating a tense atmosphere. According to reports, the situation turned volatile when a vehicle associated with DMK cadres passed through the area while VCK supporters were assembled, leading to arguments and confrontation between members of the two groups.

Visuals from the spot showed heated exchanges and chaos as police personnel intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. Authorities later brought the situation under control and increased security deployment in the area.

Police are reportedly examining video footage from the scene, and further action, including possible detentions or arrests, is expected based on the investigation.

TVK Promised A Different Kind Of Politics; Weeks Later, The Same Old Politics Is Creeping Back

TVK Promised A Different Kind Of Politics; Weeks Later, The Same Old Politics Is Creeping Back

TVK branded itself as the ‘change’ Tamil Nadu needed – a state it described as plagued by corruption, law-and-order failures, unsafe conditions for women and children, environmental destruction, and more. But within weeks of assuming power through a coalition, that promise of ‘change’ already appears to be fading.

TVK campaigned aggressively on the promise of delivering a clean, transparent and radically different style of governance. But a series of political, administrative and publicity-related controversies have triggered growing criticism from opposition parties, journalists and even sections within the ruling alliance, with many arguing that the party’s carefully cultivated “anti-corruption” and “system change” image is beginning to unravel at remarkable speed.

Horse-Trading Allegations Rock TVK Government

One of the biggest flashpoints has been the growing allegations of “horse-trading” and political poaching. Following the formation of the TVK-led coalition government, multiple opposition MLAs, such as the AIADMK and AMMK shifted support to the ruling alliance. Three AIADMK MLAs formally resigned and joined hands with the government, intensifying accusations that TVK was engineering defections despite projecting itself as a morally superior alternative to traditional Dravidian politics.

The controversy escalated further after Congress MP Jothimani publicly stated that the Congress party would not support “horse-trading politics” in Tamil Nadu, despite being part of the ruling alliance. Her remarks were widely interpreted as a direct warning to TVK and a sign of discomfort within the coalition itself.

Tender Controversy Triggers Early Governance Embarrassment

TVK’s early governance decisions have also drawn heavy criticism. The government was forced into an embarrassing retreat after a controversial tender issued by the Rural Development Department in Kancheepuram allowed only a six-hour submission window for contractors bidding for a water tank project.

IT was alleged the unusually short deadline was designed to favour a pre-selected contractor, forcing the government to cancel the tender amid mounting backlash.

Meanwhile, leaked audio clips from Viluppuram allegedly suggested that important local appointments including posts linked to Aavin and government legal offices were being discussed in exchange for massive bribes. The allegations fuelled accusations that the “new politics” promised by TVK was quickly beginning to resemble the very system it had campaigned against.

Bureaucratic Appointments Of “Tainted” Officials

The appointment of former Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun as Additional Director General of Police and Director of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has triggered significant political and civil liberties concerns, particularly because the Vijay-led TVK government had campaigned on promises of clean governance and institutional neutrality.

Arun, a 1998-batch IPS officer, was previously placed on “compulsory wait” before being brought back to head Tamil Nadu’s premier anti-corruption agency. To facilitate his appointment, the government reportedly downgraded the DVAC chief’s post from DGP rank to ADGP rank, further fuelling criticism over the move. Arun’s tenure as Chennai Police Commissioner was already mired in controversy. During the 2026 Assembly elections, both TVK itself and the BJP complained to the Election Commission that Arun was allegedly restricting Vijay’s campaign rallies in Chennai by curtailing routes and timings.

He was accused of intimidating independent YouTubers and online journalists through repeated police summons linked to the Savukku Shankar case, calling it an attempt to chill free speech during elections. The Election Commission subsequently transferred Arun out of the Commissioner’s post and barred him from election-related work.

His policing style also attracted criticism from rights groups after he publicly declared that police would “speak to rowdies in their language,” remarks later linked by activists to alleged encounter killings and custodial abuse concerns. The Madras High Court had also summoned him in a habeas corpus case related to a controversial Goondas Act detention, adding to the growing list of controversies surrounding his appointment.

“Revolutionary Governance” PR Campaigns

Beyond governance controversies, TVK’s publicity machinery has also become a major target of ridicule. The party’s social media ecosystem has focused excessively on manufacturing symbolic “revolutionary moments” out of ordinary administrative behaviour.

One such example involved viral campaigns celebrating Vijay for removing the traditional white towel from the Chief Minister’s official chair at the Secretariat, with supporters portraying it as a historic break from “VIP culture”. It can be pointed out that several leaders, including former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had long abandoned the practice, mocking the attempt to market it as transformative governance.

Office Lunch Videos And “Simple Living” Optics

TVK supporters also heavily promoted videos of Vijay carrying home-cooked food in a simple lunchbox and eating inside his office, presenting it as proof of humility and simplicity.

The campaign was dismissed by netizens as superficial image-building, arguing that ordinary working people do the same every day without requiring orchestrated social media amplification.

Rebranding Existing Schemes As “New Governance”

The government also faced backlash for allegedly rebranding pre-existing schemes as original TVK initiatives. The administration had repackaged earlier welfare and skill-development programs, including the already existing schemes such as free IAS coaching, and presenting them as fresh governance breakthroughs under Vijay’s leadership.

Secretariat Turns Into PR Stage?

Further criticism emerged over the increasing use of official government spaces for social media optics. TVK’s heavily publicized “digital transparency” push inside the Secretariat backfired after videos surfaced showing visitors and officials recording reels and promotional content during official meetings.

High-security administrative spaces were being turned into PR stages instead of functioning as serious governance centres.

“Change Politics” Narrative Fails

The problem for TVK is not merely the controversies themselves, but the speed at which they have emerged after the party rose to power promising a total break from conventional political culture.

The contrast between the party’s lofty “change politics” branding and the controversies now surrounding defections, tenders, publicity stunts and governance decisions has allowed rivals to aggressively push the narrative that TVK’s carefully crafted image is beginning to collapse almost immediately after assuming office.

Leftist Rag The Wire’s Editor Siddharth Varadarajan Says 2020 Travel Restriction Court Order “Slipped” His Memory While Fighting OCI Rejection Case

Leftist Rag The Wire's Editor Siddharth Varadarajan Says 2020 Travel Restriction Court Order “Slipped” His Memory While Fighting OCI Rejection Case

The legal battle surrounding The Wire founding editor Siddharth Varadarajan’s Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) application has taken a dramatic turn after the senior journalist tendered an unconditional apology before the Delhi High Court and sought pardon over his failure to disclose a crucial judicial order in his earlier petition, as reported in OpIndia.

The controversy erupted after the Union government informed the Delhi High Court that Varadarajan had failed to disclose a 15 May 2020 order passed by the Allahabad High Court while seeking relief against the Centre’s decision denying him OCI status.

The undisclosed order was passed in connection with a criminal case registered against Varadarajan in Ayodhya and had imposed a restriction preventing him from leaving India without obtaining permission from the trial court during the continuation of proceedings.

The matter came under scrutiny before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, who earlier this month recalled the Court’s own May 12 order that had quashed the Centre’s rejection of Varadarajan’s OCI application and directed authorities to reconsider the case.

While recalling the earlier relief, the Court observed that Varadarajan appeared prima facie guilty of suppressing material facts and warned that such conduct could invite “very serious consequences.”

The Court subsequently directed him to file an affidavit explaining why the Allahabad High Court’s conditions had not been disclosed earlier.

In his affidavit dated May 22, Varadarajan attempted to justify the omission, claiming that the Allahabad High Court order had effectively “faded from memory due to the passage of time” and the peculiar circumstances of the case.

According to the affidavit, the order had been passed nearly six years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic and, since then, there had been no meaningful progress in the criminal proceedings. Varadarajan stated that no summons had ever been issued to him after the anticipatory bail order.

He further argued that the Allahabad High Court’s direction requiring prior trial court permission before foreign travel was tied specifically to the “currency of trial.” Since charges had not yet been framed and the trial itself had not commenced, he claimed that the condition had never practically come into operation.

Varadarajan also pointed out that most of the offences against him were bailable. He stated that the remaining offence under Section 505 IPC carried a maximum punishment of three years and fell within warrant trial procedure.

“It is in these circumstances and during the long passage of time without any notification of the case that the said order… slipped the deponent’s mind,” the affidavit stated.

The senior journalist further contended that neither the Uttar Pradesh government nor the Central government had objected to his foreign travel in the intervening years, which, according to him, reinforced his understanding that the condition was not operational.

He also insisted there had been no deliberate attempt to suppress facts from the Court.

The affidavit further stated that the pendency and status of the Ayodhya criminal case had already been disclosed to the Central government during the OCI application process. Varadarajan maintained that he never intended to disregard judicial directions.

When the matter was taken up again on Monday, the Central government sought additional time to respond to the affidavit filed by Varadarajan. Justice Kaurav accepted the request and adjourned the matter to July 15.

The litigation itself arises from Varadarajan’s immigration status. A United States citizen, he currently possesses a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card.

However, after the Government of India merged the PIO and OCI schemes, PIO cards ceased to remain valid after 31 December 2025.

Varadarajan has argued before the Court that although his PIO card technically remains valid until 2032, it has become effectively unusable because the PIO scheme no longer exists and the card is no longer machine-readable. He therefore sought conversion to OCI status.

The Centre rejected the request, triggering the present legal challenge.

With the Delhi High Court now examining whether the non-disclosure amounted to an innocent oversight or suppression of material facts before a constitutional court, the case has expanded beyond an immigration dispute into a larger legal question concerning disclosure obligations and candour before the judiciary.

The proceedings scheduled for July 15 are expected to determine the next course of action in the matter.

“Congress Cannot Support Horse-Trading”: Jothimani’s Sharp Message To TVK Govt

“Congress Cannot Support Horse-Trading”: Jyothimani’s Sharp Message To TVK Govt

Congress MP Jothimani has stated that the Congress party will not support “horse-trading politics” in Tamil Nadu, amid growing political debate over MLAs from opposition parties joining the ruling TVK after the formation of the new government. It is noteworthy that the Congress and the TVK are in an alliance after TVK could not form the government on its own.

Taking to her official X handle, Jothimani wrote, “The Congress party is in alliance with TVK and is part of the government. In this election, the people have made TVK leader Mr. C. Joseph Vijay the Chief Minister. They expect him to provide a good government, and there are clear indications that he understands this and is acting accordingly. As an alliance partner, we will certainly support him in providing good governance to the people of Tamil Nadu. But that does not mean the Congress party can support every method chosen by TVK. Those methods must strengthen democracy, not weaken it. In such situations, if we have differing opinions, expressing them without hesitation is the morally and politically correct thing to do. Tamil literature beautifully describes this as “friendly criticism”. Horse-trading politics cannot be justified by anyone from the Congress party. The BJP first used horse-trading as a weapon to weaken democracy and the Congress party in India. In several states where people elected the Congress to govern, the BJP acted against the people’s mandate by using horse-trading to prevent the Congress from forming a government, or from continuing in power even after forming one. The Congress party cannot adopt a double standard where it supports horse-trading in Tamil Nadu while opposing it outside Tamil Nadu. If the Congress party itself becomes a force that weakens democracy, it would amount to a historic betrayal of Gandhi, Nehru, and the principles they stood for. At a time when leader Rahul Gandhi is uncompromisingly fighting for principles, anyone who engages in actions that weaken that struggle cannot be accepted.”

Her remarks come at a time when allegations of “horse-trading” have intensified in Tamil Nadu politics over the past week, particularly after several leaders and legislators from opposition parties, including the AIADMK, shifted to TVK. On Monday, three MLAs joined the ruling party, further fuelling speculation and criticism from opposition circles.

First Electricity, Now Farm Loans – Modified Promises: TVK Promised Full Crop Loan Waiver For Small Farmers, Joseph Vijay Govt Scales Down Relief

First Electricity, Now Farm Loans - Modified Promises: TVK Promised Full Crop Loan Waiver For Small Farmers, Joseph Vijay Govt Scales Down Relief

Barely weeks after assuming office, Chief Minister S Joseph Vijay’s government is once again facing fresh criticism over what can be described as a growing pattern of scaling down major election promises after coming to power.

In its April 2026 manifesto, TVK had promised a sweeping farm relief package that included a full waiver of cooperative crop loans for farmers owning less than five acres, a 50% waiver for larger farmers, annual assistance of ₹15,000 for every landholding farmer, ₹10,000 yearly support for farm labourers, 100% crop insurance coverage, five lakh solar pumps, and higher minimum support prices for paddy and sugarcane.

But the crop loan waiver announced by the Vijay government on Monday, 25 May 2026, fell far short of that promise.

As reported in News18/ANI, the government announced that only crop loans up to ₹50,000 taken through cooperative banks would be fully waived for marginal farmers. Farmers with larger loans would receive only partial relief on a graded basis, with those owing more than ₹1 lakh receiving just ₹5,000 in waiver support.

The scheme applies only to loans taken between 1 May 2025 and 28 February 2026 and is expected to cost the state ₹2,044.46 crore.

TVK minister CTR Nirmalkumar claimed the move fulfilled an election promise and said around 14.22 lakh farmers would benefit from the waiver scheme.

However, the original manifesto had promised a full waiver based on landholding size, not a capped and graded waiver linked to loan amounts. Several other major promises made to farmers including annual financial assistance, MSP guarantees, solar pumps and full crop insurance were absent from the announcement.

The controversy has also revived criticism over the Vijay government’s first major post-election decision on electricity subsidies.

During the election campaign, TVK repeatedly promised “200 units free electricity every month” for households. But after assuming office, the government’s first order implemented 200 free units only once every two months, and only for households consuming less than 500 units during the bi-monthly billing cycle.

This distinction fundamentally reduced the value of the subsidy because Tamil Nadu follows a two-month billing system. Middle-class households consuming above the 500-unit ceiling were also excluded from the benefit.

With the crop loan waiver now similarly diluted from its original campaign pitch, the Vijay government is increasingly coming across as one which promises one thing and delivers something else or underdelivers.

‘Thooya Sakthi’ TVK Model Women’s Safety: Man Posing As Electricity Meter Reader Sexually Harasses Young Girl Alone At Home Near Ambattur, Arrested

'Thooya Sakthi' TVK Model Women's Safety: Man Posing As Electricity Meter Reader Sexually Harasses Young Girl Alone At Home Near Ambattur, Arrested

In a disturbing incident reported from the Athipattu area near Ambattur, Chennai, a man posing as an electricity meter reader allegedly sexually harassed a young girl who was home alone, robbed her of her jewelry, and fled. The police have since arrested the accused, identified as Balaji, also known as “Laptop Balaji,” a resident of the Selliamman Temple area in Tondiarpet.

The incident took place in the Athipattu area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ambattur Industrial Estate Police Station. According to police reports, the family residing in the area had gone out for work, leaving the young girl alone at home. At that time, an unidentified man arrived at the house, introduced himself as an official engaged in electricity meter reading duties, and gained entry into the home.

Once inside, the man allegedly behaved inappropriately toward the young girl, sexually molesting her. He then snatched the silver anklets and gold ring she was wearing and escaped from the premises.

Shocked by the ordeal, the young girl immediately informed her parents. Following this, the girl’s parents lodged a formal complaint at the Ambattur Industrial Estate Police Station. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case, analyzed CCTV footage from the area where the incident occurred, formed a special task force to apprehend the culprit, and launched an intensive manhunt.

In a recent development, the special police team successfully apprehended the unidentified man, who had been absconding. He was brought to the police station, and his interrogation has commenced.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the police have revealed that the arrested individual is Balaji, also known as “Laptop Balaji”, a resident of the Selliamman Temple area in Tondiarpet. Furthermore, the investigation has exposed that there are over five pending criminal cases against him across various police stations, involving offenses such as two-wheeler theft and other crimes.

Additionally, the police have successfully recovered and seized the silver anklets and gold ring that were stolen from the young girl. Following this, the Ambattur Industrial Estate police registered a case against Balaji, produced him before a court, and subsequently remanded him to prison.

Amidst a continuous spate of sexual offenses occurring across Tamil Nadu, particularly the alarming rise in crimes against children and minors, parents have been left deeply distressed. Consequently, a primary demand has emerged urging the government to take immediate and appropriate action: specifically, to initiate stringent measures against those involved in such criminal acts and to implement preventive strategies to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.

'Thooya Sakthi' TVK Model Law & Order: Class 12 Student 7 Months Pregnant After Continuous Sexual Assault, Accused Arrested; Third Case In Five Days In Madurai West

TVK came to power promising safety for women and children in Tamil Nadu. But barely days after Joseph Vijay becoming the Chief Minister, there are multiple instances of assaults and murder especially targeting women and children in Tamil Nadu.

In a disturbing series of events, the Madurai district has witnessed a sharp rise in sexual crimes against minors, with three separate cases registered in just five days within the Madurai West constituency. The latest incident involves the arrest of a man accused of sexually assaulting a 12th-grade student, who is now reportedly seven months pregnant.

The accused has been identified as Muthumani, a resident of the Power House area near Paravai in Madurai district. He was arrested today for subjecting a 12th-grade student from the same locality to continuous sexual harassment. The victim’s mother filed a complaint regarding the incident. Following a medical examination at a government hospital, it was revealed that the victim is seven months pregnant. In response, the mother lodged a formal complaint at the Samayanallur All-Women Police Station, requesting that a case be registered. Based on this complaint, a case was filed, and the accused has been taken into custody.

This case is the third such incident reported in the Madurai West constituency within a span of just five days, causing significant shock and outrage among local residents. Cases have now been filed involving victims ranging from an eight-year-old girl to school students and a Plus-2 student.

According to details provided by police sources, the three cases are as follows:

21 May 2026: Duraippandi, a resident of Pudukkottai, was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexually harassing an eight-year-old girl.

23 May 2026: Kannan, a resident of the Keelamathur area and an administrator of the TVK, was arrested for sexually harassing a 10th-grade student.

24 May 2026: Muthumani, from the Paravai Power House area, was arrested for sexually harassing a 12th-grade student and committing various sexual offenses against her. Reports indicate that the victim is now seven months pregnant.

All three cases were registered based on complaints filed by victims’ mothers and relatives at the Samayanallur Police Station and the Samayanallur All-Women Police Station. The Samayanallur All-Women Police have made the arrests and are currently taking further legal action.

The alarming increase in crimes committed against school students and young girls has raised particular concern across the district. In this context, local residents, affected parents, social activists, and an individual named Prakash have appealed to the District Administration and the Police Department to ensure that severe punishments are handed down to those involved in such crimes. They have also called upon the Tamil Nadu government, specifically Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, who has pledged to protect young girls, to ensure that these criminals face strict legal consequences.

Ancient Hero Stone Linked To Rajendra Chola Unearthed Near Pochampalli

Ancient Hero Stone Linked To Rajendra Chola Unearthed Near Pochampalli

A hero stone believed to date back to the reign of Rajendra Chola I has been discovered near Pochampalli in Krishnagiri district, adding to the growing list of Chola-era archaeological findings in the region.

According to researchers, several hero stones and inscriptions from the Chola period have previously been identified across Krishnagiri district. As part of continuing efforts to document such historical remains, the Historical Research and Documentation Association, along with the Archaeological Research Institute, conducted a field study near the banks of the Penukundapuram lake.

During the survey, researchers identified a hero stone estimated to be around 1,000 years old. Preliminary studies suggest that the stone belongs to the period of Rajendra Chola and contains a carved figure believed to represent a local chieftain.

Researchers stated that this is the third hero stone discovered in the area, and further examination is currently underway to decipher the inscriptional letters engraved on the stone.

Scholars involved in the study said an inscription dated to the year 1134 was also found alongside the hero stone.

Speaking about the findings, researchers said they had been studying the hero stone for nearly a month. They noted that the structure and features of the stone appeared somewhat different from earlier discoveries in the region, prompting them to gather oral accounts from local residents.

According to information collected from the local community, the historical memory associated with the site has been passed down through five to six generations.

Researchers said local accounts referred to a battle that allegedly took place in the area in 1134. During their inquiries, they were told that forces linked to Rajendra Chola I and Rajaraja Chola I had arrived in the region to seize wealth, cattle, goats, stored goods, and agricultural lands.

According to the oral narratives documented by the researchers, a local ruler identified as Manibala of Mathamangalam resisted the invasion. Researchers said residents claimed that because of his resistance, the resources and wealth in the region were protected.

Further archaeological and epigraphical studies are expected to be carried out to verify the historical details connected to the newly discovered hero stone and inscription.

Nashik SIT Recovers Chats Allegedly Showing Nida Khan Renamed TCS Grooming Case Victim “Hania” In Religious Conversion Plot

TCS Nashik Harassment Scandal: Accused Nida Khan Had Malaysia Links, Tried Job Trap And Conversion, Prosecution Tells Court

A fresh development has emerged in the high-profile Nashik religious conversion and rape case linked to the Tata Consultancy Services office, with investigators claiming to have recovered chats referring to the name “Hania” during the ongoing probe, as reported in News18.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the case has alleged that the chats are connected to the complainant’s alleged religious conversion and the reported change of her name. The Nashik Road court is scheduled to hear the bail plea of accused Nida Ijaz Khan on Saturday.

According to investigators, the SIT recovered conversations allegedly linked to the victim’s conversion. Police claimed that one of the chats showed Nida Khan telling a relative, “I am going out with Hania today…”

When the relative allegedly asked, “Who is Hania?”, Nida Khan reportedly replied, “The one who converted…”

Investigators believe the messages support key aspects of the prosecution’s case. According to the SIT, the complainant’s name was allegedly changed to “Hania” as part of a larger conspiracy to alter her religious identity.

The case concerns an unmarried woman employed at a multinational company who accused the accused persons of rape and attempts to forcibly convert her religion.

An FIR in the matter was registered at the Deolali Camp Police Station on March 26, 2026. The accused were booked under charges including rape, attempt to forcibly convert the victim’s religion, and hurting religious sentiments.

Police also invoked multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to sexual assault, criminal conspiracy, cheating, and outraging religious sentiments. Provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were additionally applied in the case.

The SIT has since filed a chargesheet running to nearly 1,500 pages before the court.

The chargesheet names four accused — Danish Ejaz Sheikh, Tausif Bilal Attar, Nida Ijaz Khan, and Matin Majid Patel.

Police said Danish Sheikh and Tausif Attar had already been arrested earlier during the investigation.

Nida Khan, who had allegedly been absconding, was detained from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on May 7.

Matin Patel, an All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen corporator from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, has also been named as a co-accused in the case.

According to police, Patel allegedly provided shelter to the absconding accused. Nashik Police have issued him a notice directing him to appear for questioning.

Investigators stated that Nida Khan was arrested from Patel’s residence earlier this month.

Given the seriousness of the allegations, Sandeep Karnik had constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the case. The SIT is headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Sandeep Mitke.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and that further legal proceedings would depend on the outcome of the pending court hearings, including the bail application filed by Nida Khan.
