“Congress Cannot Support Horse-Trading”: Jyothimani’s Sharp Message To TVK Govt

Congress MP Jyothimani has stated that the Congress party will not support “horse-trading politics” in Tamil Nadu, amid growing political debate over MLAs from opposition parties joining the ruling TVK after the formation of the new government. It is noteworthy that the Congress and the TVK are in an alliance after TVK could not form the government on its own.

Taking to her official X handle, Jothimani wrote, “The Congress party is in alliance with TVK and is part of the government. In this election, the people have made TVK leader Mr. C. Joseph Vijay the Chief Minister. They expect him to provide a good government, and there are clear indications that he understands this and is acting accordingly. As an alliance partner, we will certainly support him in providing good governance to the people of Tamil Nadu. But that does not mean the Congress party can support every method chosen by TVK. Those methods must strengthen democracy, not weaken it. In such situations, if we have differing opinions, expressing them without hesitation is the morally and politically correct thing to do. Tamil literature beautifully describes this as “friendly criticism”. Horse-trading politics cannot be justified by anyone from the Congress party. The BJP first used horse-trading as a weapon to weaken democracy and the Congress party in India. In several states where people elected the Congress to govern, the BJP acted against the people’s mandate by using horse-trading to prevent the Congress from forming a government, or from continuing in power even after forming one. The Congress party cannot adopt a double standard where it supports horse-trading in Tamil Nadu while opposing it outside Tamil Nadu. If the Congress party itself becomes a force that weakens democracy, it would amount to a historic betrayal of Gandhi, Nehru, and the principles they stood for. At a time when leader Rahul Gandhi is uncompromisingly fighting for principles, anyone who engages in actions that weaken that struggle cannot be accepted.”

Her remarks come at a time when allegations of “horse-trading” have intensified in Tamil Nadu politics over the past week, particularly after several leaders and legislators from opposition parties, including the AIADMK, shifted to TVK. On Monday, three MLAs joined the ruling party, further fuelling speculation and criticism from opposition circles.
