Tension erupted near the Kunnam bus stand in Perambalur district following a confrontation between cadres of the DMK and the VCK, amid growing political friction between the two alliance parties.
The clash comes in the backdrop of recent political tensions after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) extended support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government. The move triggered criticism from sections within the DMK, with several party functionaries openly expressing displeasure.
The situation escalated further after DMK deputy general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP A. Raja posted sharp remarks on social media last week, drawing strong objections from VCK cadres. In response, VCK members had announced plans to stage a protest in front of Raja’s office, though the agitation was later withdrawn.
Fresh tensions emerged when VCK cadres sought police permission to hold a protest near the Kunnam bus stand condemning the remarks against their party. Police reportedly denied permission for the demonstration. DMK cadres also sought permission for a counter-protest, which was similarly rejected by authorities.
Despite the denial of permission, supporters from both parties gathered in large numbers near the bus stand area, creating a tense atmosphere. According to reports, the situation turned volatile when a vehicle associated with DMK cadres passed through the area while VCK supporters were assembled, leading to arguments and confrontation between members of the two groups.
Visuals from the spot showed heated exchanges and chaos as police personnel intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. Authorities later brought the situation under control and increased security deployment in the area.
Police are reportedly examining video footage from the scene, and further action, including possible detentions or arrests, is expected based on the investigation.
