A functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has been arrested in Madurai district under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act following allegations of sexual harassment involving a Class 10 student.
The accused, identified as Kannan from Keelamathur village, was arrested by the Samayanallur police based on a complaint filed by the family of the minor girl.
According to the complaint, Kannan allegedly trespassed into the girl’s house at midnight and sexually harassed her. The incident reportedly came to light after the girl informed her parents about the alleged assault.
Sources said the girl’s parents and local residents caught the accused and handed him over to the police.
Following preliminary enquiries, the Samayanallur police registered a case under the POCSO Act against Kannan. He was subsequently arrested, produced before a court, and remanded to judicial custody.
The incident has triggered shock and outrage in the Madurai region, particularly because the accused is said to be a local office-bearer of the TVK.
Police officials said further investigation into the case is underway.
