#JusticeForManikandan: 21-year-old college student becomes victim of police brutality in TN

In a latest case of police brutality and custodial death, a young college student from Mudukalathur, Ramanathapuram district, has become a victim. Manikandan (21), from the Neerkozhiyenthal village, died few hours after returning home from the police station.

Manikandan, who was travelling with his two-wheeler, was stopped by the police for a vehicle check. However, he did not stop and sped away, leading to a chase by the police officials. After being caught, he was taken to the police station and was allegedly brutally thrashed by the police officials. He was not let to go home, until his parents went to the police station to get him home.

The boy then passed away around 3:30 am in the morning. He was declared dead by the Ambulance nurses when they reached Manikandan’s house itself. The family of the victim are now protesting as they claim that 4 police officials are the reason behind his death.

A police official has claimed that Manikandan could have passed even because of a snake bite and that a conclusion can be met only once the Post mortem report is out. However, Manikandan’s family have refused to receive the body, and are protesting  in front of the government hospital which has caused a huge traffic block in the Paramakudi-Mudukulathur road.

#JusticeforManikandan has started trending on Twitter as many have spoken against this kind of Police Brutality. TN JP chief Annamalai also spoke about this case to the press seeking justice for Manikandan. He also took to his twitter to share the same. Many have also recollected the 2020 Jayaraj-Bennicks custodial death case that came as a shock to many in Tamil Nadu. Check out some of the tweets here:

“Why is water still stagnant so many days after the rains have eased”; Dr. Sumanth Raman replies to tweet featuring CM M.K. Stalin visiting Mangadu for ‘flood relief’

Ever since rains have been hitting Tamil Nadu, roads, streets and houses in many areas have been inundated with water and many people have found it difficult without a proper place to stay. While  people are questioning why the flooding situation hasn’t improved in anyway, the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has been busy going to places and checking the situation of people, at least according to videos published by media channels.

Recently, a video of the CM personally going to Dhanalakshmi Nagar in Mangadu and asking the people about the flooding situation was shared across social media platforms. Many on twitter retweeted the video and even appreciated the CM for personally taking up relief measures and checking upon the people of the State. While this is being shared widely on social media, some have even questioned if these are just mere  acts of publicity. Check out the video here:

Dr. Sumanth Raman, political analyst and doctor, replied to the video asking a very valid question; an angle that is often missed out by media channels. He asked, “Why is water still stagnant so many days after the rains have eased?” The question is of primary importance because we can see the women of the area walking in knee-deep water, even though the rains have stopped 4-5 days back. Why has the water not receded even after the rains have stopped? Why is nothing being done to ensure that the water has receded? Neither this angle nor this question has been raised by any media channel that has shared videos of the CM checking the water flooding in various areas. Check out the tweet here:

In addition to this, some others raised even more important questions in the comments of this tweet. Here are some interesting replies:

Congress finds new ways to make more people join their party; offers free tickets for Maanadu film

A new angle has been given to politics in Coimbatore, as a Congress member sat outside a theatre in that city and promised free tickets for Maanadu film to the people who vote in the Youth Congress Elections that are taking place online.

In contrast to politicians actually paying for people to take part in ‘Maanadu’ (conferences), a Congress party youth has actually tried to make more youngsters join the party by promising them free tickets to Simbu’s Maanadu film, in Coimbatore. In the Arasan theatre of Sundarajapuram in Coimbatore, a allegation has been placed that a Congress member has promised free tickets to the movie for people who come with their Aadhar cards and Voter IDs and vote in the Youth Congress Elections, online.

A Youth Congress Election is taking place online and votes are being cast for the positions such as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and District Chief. If reports are to be believed, members of the party have sat outside the theatre to persuade youngsters who come there to cast their vote with a free ticket to the film as it is easier than searching for individuals with Aadhar cards on streets.

While some have accepted this ‘free ticket’ offer of Congress and have cast their vote, many have escaped from the place by saying that they have left their ID cards at home.

DMK’s attempt to ‘christianize’ Tamil Puthandu must be rejected lock, stock and barrel

The Tamil Puthandu is a festive occasion celebrated by Tamils across the world. It is the commencement of the new year according to the traditional Tamil calendar that starts with the month of Chithirai. It usually falls on the 14th of April of the English calendar. From celebrations at home to ‘Thiruvizha’ in temples, Puthandu is considered an auspicious day for all Tamil Hindus.

Not just for Tamil Hindus, the commencement of the new year is celebrated as Vishu in Kerala, Rongali Bihu in Assam, Pohela Boisakh in Bengal, Bishuva Sankranti in Odisha, Jud Sheetal in parts of Bihar, etc. Even countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Bali, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka, Thailand, etc also celebrate the traditional New Year around this time.

But the DMK government is Tamil Nadu is making a nefarious attempt to ‘christianize’ this festival in order to peddle its agenda and appease its Christian vote bank.

It has become a topic of heated discussion after a picture of a Pongal gift bag from the current ruling government, was shared along with the ‘Happy Tamil New Year’ wishes.

The current DMK government wants to make the Pongal festival which falls on the Tamil month of ‘Thai’ as Tamil New Year. This decision to change the New Year isn’t new.

Back in 2008, when the ruling government in Tamil Nadu was DMK, the then Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi passed the Tamil Nadu New Year (Declaration) Bill 2008, changing the Tamil New Year from Chithirai 1 (April 14th) to Thai 1 (January 14th or 15th).

This ridiculous change was in action for three years despite it not having any resonance with the Tamil people. Although the Tamil New Year was changed to January (Thai 1), the Tamil people continued to celebrate New Year on April 14th rejecting the DMK’s move to the dustbin.

As expected, this move did not last long because as soon as AIADMK came back to power in 2011, the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa repealed the Act and restored the traditional Chithirai 1 as the Tamil New Year followed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

But, now that the DMK government led by MK Stalin is once again trying to meddle in the faith of people, let us look at why the it is desperate to make this change and what reason they give for it.

They say that old Tamil texts and history shows that Tamil New Year was actually celebrated in the month of January. In continuation, the argument says that after 2nd or 3rd Century BC, Sanskrit culture and language started influencing Tamil culture and language. Apparently, a few scholars saw details of the year beginning in Thai in classical Tamil literature, such as the anthologies of Sangam-era poems like Natrinai and Ainkurunuru and the grammar book Tholkappiam.

The DMK and other Dravidian dimwits also argue that January is the month of the Tamil harvest festival Pongal and that having Tamil New Year in April amounts to following a ‘Brahmin-dominated’ or Sanskritic tradition which was against the Dravidian ideologies.

But here are some real evidences from ancient Tamil literature that busts the distortionary arguments of the DMK and their Dravidian myth peddlers.

“திண்ணிலை மருப்பின் ஆடு தலையாக விண்ணூர்பு திரிதரும் வீங்கு செலல் மண்டிலம்”

“Thinnilai Marruppin Aadu Thalaiyaaga Vinnurpu Thiritharum Veengu Sella Mandilam”

The above quote by Nakkeerar, a famous Tamil poet of the Sangam age, notes that the world runs with the goat (Mesha rasi / Aries) as the first sign.

Not only in this Sangam song, many ancient Tamil songs that are about the astronomical predictions and changes in position of planets and starts.

Kudalur Kizhar is another poet of the Sangam era whose poems are part of the Kurunthogai (166, 167, 214) and Purananuru (229). In the poem in Purananuru, where he predicts the death of Chera ruler Yanaikatchei Mantharanj Cheral Irumborai (62-42 BC), he mentions Chithirai month and Mesha rasi.

In essence, the first month of the year is the month of Chithirai during spring when the Sun enters Mesha (Aries) zodiac sign. The year ends with the month of Panguni when the sun comes up in Pisces. This is the solar calendar that is followed across the country while there are many communities in different states that follows the lunar calendar.

Stanley Rajan, a Tamil blogger has written an essay in Tamil where he explains how ‘Chithirai 1’ as Tamil New Year is very much a Tamil practice. In the essay, he mentions a song called ‘Yermangalam’ in Silapathikaram which mentions a line ‘Chithira Mezhi Vaibhavam’ that talks about a festival marking the seasonal change for the Tamil people. It literally means that in the Chithirai month, the king will plow the land to mark the beginning of the new year.” He also quotes various other texts to help explain his point.

The other argument put forth by the DMK and their minions is that Thiruvalluvar’s birth date was once found out to be in the month of January around 31 BCE, and the 60-year-cycle of the Sanskrit Calendar was replaced with the Tamil Calendar beginning with the Thiruvalluvar Era. So the argument is that, by the logic of following a calendar starting from the Thiruvalluvar era, the year should also begin at the same time.

But that’s no the real motive for the DMK. They want to attack the Hindu faith and debase Tamils from their Hindu roots.

The English New Year is celebrated on January 1st, which comes 6 days after Christmas, the day considered as the birth date of Jesus Christ. But, in Tembavani, Veeramamunivar says that the actual birth date of Jesus Christ is actually ‘Margazhi 25th’ which comes somewhere in the first week of January, before Pongal. So, it is being speculated that the party might want to make ‘Thai 1’ as Tamil New Year, in order to bring it closer to Jesus Christ’s actual birth date. The theory basically says that the idea behind changing the date is to Christianize the concept of Tamil New Year.

There is a reason why the Harvest festival is celebrated in January and the New Year in April. After harvesting crops in the Thai month (January-February) farmers took a short period of rest in the months of Masi and Panguni (February-April) and started their farming again from Chithirai (April) which marks the beginning of the Spring season.

Even though AIADMK also follow a Dravidian ideology, they restored April 14th as Tamil Puthandu, because of the logic in place and also because of the fact that this is how Tamil New year is being celebrated for decades or even centuries together.

O. Paneerselvam- MLA and Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Annamalai – Tamil Nadu BJP Chief and TTV Dhinakaran- former MLA, are some of many leaders who have voiced out against this change of date and have requested the Chief Minister to reconsider the government’s decision. Whether the decision will be reconsidered or not Tamil people should reject the DMK’s move to christianize Tamil culture lock, stock and barrel.

What is the Annur Industrial Estate project? Why are farmers protesting against it? Why no ‘Godi Media’ of TN is talking about it?

The DMK government in Tamil Nadu has proposed to set up an industrial estate at Annur village in Coimbatore district. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) is set to acquire 3,832 acres of agricultural land in and around the site for this purpose.

However, a circular regarding this announcement was issued to the Coimbatore District Collector by TIDCO without any discussion with the main stakeholders – the farmers.

Why are the farmers protesting against it?

Though the circular claims that these lands are dry lands and are not under cultivation, it has been reported that the area is fertile with abundant groundwater supply. Cash crops like banana, turmeric, mint, jasmine, coconut etc. are being cultivated.

With the implementation of Avinashi-Athikadavu scheme, more than 100 ponds that are located inside the proposed area are expected to get recharged every year by this project. As a result, the farmers are all set to increase cropping cultivation of cash crops like tapiaco, turmeric, etc from 2022 that will help them get more income. This decision by the DMK government to take over these lands (which they claim to be dry lands) has come as a shock to the farmers of the region.

The Costliest Industrial Park

The estimated land price per acre based on the earlier SPMC EMC Cluster Project that was to come up in this region turns out to be ₹20 lakh.

Assuming that the land price has doubled in the last 6 years, the approximate minimum cost per acre will be ₹40 lakhs. For 3832 acres, the Tamil Nadu government must set aside  ₹1500 crores just for compensation alone. This does not even include other expenses like construction, labour, operational costs, etc.

In essence, it will become the most costliest project of the state even before its actual development.

Also, the proposed site is situated just 10 kms away from Tamil Nadu’s second largest dam Bhavani Sagar, which irrigates about 2.0 lakh acres in Erode, Tirupur, Salem districts. The site is also in close proximity to the Sathyamangalam Reserve Forest.

Therefore, setting up of the industrial estate here would collapse the entire ecosystem.

The Double-Standards Of DMK And Their Godi Media

This project was not even announced in the Policy Note published by the Tamil Nadu government during the budget session. The Policy Note for the year 2021-22 mentions only about 1000 acres land for the industrial park near Annur.

What is worth noting is that the DMK had promised to stop this industrial park during the rural local body polls in September 2021.

While the DMK and its allies opposed the Chennai-Salem highway which needed 2791 hectares of land over 277 km length, they are now acquiring 1557 acres of land in just a 10 kms radius displacing close to 5000 families.

What is even more worrying is that a 250 acre plot owned by a premier mill is excluded from TIDCO industrial park acquisition.

The farmers who are to be affected by this move have been shocked, as no political party except the BJP has taken up the matter.

In a video, a farmer from the Annur village opens up about the difficulties the farmers of the area will be facing if the agricultural lands are taken away from them. He says, “Even if we’re given 1 crore rupees, we are not ready to give up our lands, and we are very clear about this.” Check out the full video here:

The Farmers have conducted talks with the district collector and have even approached A Raja, DMK MP from the Nilgiris constituency. But, even he dismissed them without even giving heed to their requests. In a video, we can see him saying, “Go home, think about this once more and let me know again. I will then talk to the Chief Minister.”

When DMK was the opposition party, it opposed the Chennai-Salem 8 lane highway project spanning across 277 kms, with a requirement of 2791 acres of land. However, the same government has proposed turning good agricultural land into an Industrial park. AIADMK’s proposition to do such a project was debated and argued left right and center in all media channels.  This government’s announcement and plan has not even come out for the past 3 months and not one debate has taken place even after news about the farmer’s protest has come out.

BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai personally met the farmers whose lands are to be taken by the government announcing that the party will stand with the farmers and will not let the project to commence.
