Geeta Pandey, BBC News Women and Social Affairs Editor for India, is a senior journalist with decades of experience covering the country. Her platform reaches BBC’s 320 million weekly global audience. This massive audience is being fed is a systematically distorted portrayal of India that frames both the nation and its Hindu traditions in a consistently negative light.
The Mahakumbh Coverage
Pandey described Naga Sadhus for BBC’s global audience as “naked ash-smeared ascetics.” She called the Mahakumbh a “bathing spectacle.”
The sacred event drew 65 crore visitors in 45 days, making it the world’s largest recorded human gathering, yet her framing reduced it to a ‘spectacle’.
The Uttar Pradesh government deployed 2,700 AI cameras, drones, AI chatbots, and thermal imaging for crowd management.
However, Pandey’s headline focused on inconveniences: “Prayagraj, city of traffic jams.”
What Pandey chose not to tell BBC readers is that the Mahakumbh generated ₹1.5 lakh crore from tourism for Uttar Pradesh and created around 6 lakh direct jobs.
The event used AI at an unprecedented scale, with many event experts describing its digital management as a global benchmark. These achievements were entirely absent from her reporting.
The Ram Mandir Coverage
Pandey’s article on the Ram Mandir carried the headline: “PM Modi inaugurates Hindu temple on razed Babri Mosque site.”
The Supreme Court of India held in 2019 that Ram Lalla had the legal right to the land.
However, Pandey chose to provide readers with the 1992 demolition as context and stopped there. The 500-year-old documented Hindu claim to the site was totally absent from her reporting. The decades of karsevaks who dedicated their lives to the temple were nowhere mentioned.
The Atiq Ahmed Profile
Atiq Ahmed, a convicted politician facing over 100 criminal cases including murder, extortion, and kidnapping, was killed in police custody in April 2023. Pandey’s BBC profile described him as a “Robin Hood” figure.
While the article mentioned his criminal record, the framing gave him a sympathetic rags-to-riches narrative. The victims and their families did not receive that sympathetic treatment. His organised crime network received little mention in her reporting.
The “Murder Cry” Article
Pandey published an article titled: “Jai Shri Ram: The Hindu chant that became a murder cry.”
The article came after the Tabrez Ansari lynching, where he was beaten and forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram.” His attackers were arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 10 years in jail.
The BBC has never published an article calling “Allahu Akbar” a murder cry, despite it being screamed by terrorists in documented mass casualty attacks across the world. The standard that brands a Hindu chant as a “murder cry” appears to apply only to Hinduism.
The “Fatal Fall” Coverage
In an article titled “How a Man’s Fatal Fall at a Fort in India Sparked a Media Frenzy,” Pandey reported on Ketan Agarwal, who was pushed off Lohagad Fort by his fiancée Siya Goyal. She was arrested and chargesheeted for pushing her fiancé. Yet Pandey’s BBC headline read “fatal fall”, not murder.
She wrote that Siya is being “called a murderer and mocked.” She omitted the entire murder plot and framed a murder chargesheet as mob shaming.
The Jantar Mantar Protests
In her article on the Jantar Mantar protests, Pandey wrote that demonstrators were under the watch of “police and paramilitary.” She omitted that they were protesting without the required permissions, making police deployment part of routine law enforcement.
The Heatwave Coverage
Pandey covered Delhi’s 43.5°C heat, focusing on why it felt hotter, the impact on people, and infrastructure strain.
Yet she has not similarly covered Europe’s recent heatwaves, which also caused major disruption, including damaged roads, rail tracks, and airport runways.
The Kashmir Reporting
In her Kashmir reporting, Pandey uses the term “Indian-administered Kashmir.” She said she spent two days in the valley and only found grievances. Stone pelting and the influx of tourists never found place in her article.
The Pattern of Anti-India Narrative Construction
Geeta Pandey belongs to the same network of journalists who are planted by foreign media to present a false image of India on the global stage. These people have consistently immersed themselves with the sole motive of framing an anti-India and anti-Hindu narrative.
Through her position at BBC, Pandey reaches hundreds of millions of readers with a version of India that consistently highlights negatives, erases achievements, and portrays Hindu traditions and symbols in derogatory terms.
