At a press meet, Islamist outfit Indian National League (INL) Party State Vice President Kambam Sadiq accused Hindu organisations of inflaming communal tensions over a video from Srivilliputhur in which two Muslim youths were heard threatening that a bomb would explode in the town. He demanded stringent action against members of Hindu organisations, including under the Goondas Act or the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The controversy arose during a Vinayagar Chaturthi procession passing near a mosque in Srivilliputhur, Virudhunagar district, on 16 September 2026. A confrontation reportedly broke out over the raising of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” slogans. During the altercation, one youth allegedly threatened that a bomb would explode in Srivilliputhur. A video of the incident subsequently circulated on social media.
Speaking at the press meet, Sadiq claimed that Hindu organisations had publicised the video as though the incident amounted to a serious offence intended to provoke communal conflict. Sadiq argued that the youths had made the remarks out of ignorance and allegedly said the words ‘bomb will explode’ instead of ‘protests will explode’ and questioned why members of Hindu organisations had not been arrested.
Sadiq said the two Muslim youths had been arrested and subsequently released on bail. But he wanted stringent action against those they accused of spreading the video and aggravating religious tensions.
Allegations Of Selective Police Action
Sadiq also accused the Tamil Nadu government and police of failing to act against attacks on Muslim places of worship, while taking prompt action when Muslims were accused of offences.
Sadiq alleged that mosques in Tiruppur, Vadapalani and Koyambedu had been attacked, and criticised Chief Minister Joseph Vijay for not publicly addressing the incidents.
He claimed that when individuals from Hindu organisations were involved in controversial incidents, the police tended to attribute their actions to mental health issues or intoxication, whereas Muslims faced arrests and legal action.
He condemned what he described as discriminatory policing and demanded that the authorities invoke the Goondas Act or UAPA against those they accused of targeting Muslim places of worship and provoking communal tensions.
Demand For Action Against Intelligence Official
Sadiq further alleged that a Tamil Nadu intelligence official named Rajalingam had shared the video of the two youths speaking at the Srivilliputhur mosque premises with Hindu organisations.
He called on the state police to initiate departmental action against the official.
Demand For Parole For Muslim Prisoners
Sadiq also urged the Tamil Nadu government to grant parole or leave to Muslim prisoners who have been incarcerated for long periods.
Sadiq said the government should act in accordance with the expectations of the people who had elected it and address what they described as the continued targeting of Muslims.
He warned that if the government failed to address their demands and take action over alleged attacks on mosques, their organisation would launch a large-scale, statewide protest.
