A 26-year-old man, Jerome Benhar, has been arrested by Coimbatore police for allegedly posting derogatory and defamatory remarks about Hindu gods, religious beliefs, temples, and Hindu organisations on social media, as reported in Dinamalar.
Jerome, son of Samuel, is a resident of Krishnar Kovil Street in Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore. He allegedly posted the remarks through his Instagram and Facebook accounts under the name ‘Beher Jerry’.
Satheesh, a member of the Hindu Munnani’s state executive committee, reportedly came across the Facebook posts and was shocked by their content. He subsequently lodged a complaint at the Police Commissioner’s Office along with other Hindu Munnani functionaries.
Following the complaint, police registered a case and arrested Jerome Benhur, alleging that his social media posts could disturb religious harmony and public peace.
