‘Jesus Saved Tamil Nadu From COVID-19’, Pastor MD Jegan Claims

'Jesus Saved Tamil Nadu From COVID-19', Pastor MD Jegan Said

Brother MD Jegan, also referred to as Pastor MD Jegan, a Tamil Christian speaker and preacher associated with Heavenly Ladder Ministries (HLM), spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown restrictions and the situation in Tamil Nadu in a sermon believed to be from the COVID-19 period.

Speaking about the pandemic, Jegan described the situation in the United States and referred to restrictions imposed during the outbreak.

“They have turned America into a divided/disconnected city. They said that no one should go to America or come back from there. Such a terrible virus is striking down and overwhelming everyone. But the Lord, in His grace, has brought you and me here safely and allowed us to sit together happily. Hallelujah! You and I are still alive. I am amazed when I look at what is happening. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has even been affected by this situation. His personal doctor died. The Princess of Spain died. The Prime Minister of Italy also got COVID but he escaped somehow. Everyone is being affected one after another. Even the biggest and most powerful people are being admitted to hospitals, discharged, admitted again, and discharged again. But you and I don’t even have masks. We don’t have anything. Our people are being very casual about it. Last week, I went to Bangalore. Everyone there was wearing masks. If you don’t wear a mask, there is a fine of 250 rupees. When we went there, it seemed very different to us. They asked us, ‘Why are you wearing masks?’ We said, ‘The whole world is wearing masks! Why don’t you come to our country and see our people?’ Then they came and saw for themselves. Afterwards, they said, ‘What is this? Nobody is wearing a mask here. Even the Chief Minister isn’t wearing one. Why should we wear them? We are strong!’. By grace of Jesus, he has preserved Tamil Nadu. Do you know what happened during the December 31 night prayer? We had an all-night prayer service, didn’t we? That is what amazes me so much. It happened only in Tamil Nadu. It didn’t happen anywhere else in the world. The December 31st night prayer was held only in Tamil Nadu. Everywhere else, they did not allow such gatherings because of lockdown. They said that nobody should come together because of the infection. But we didn’t get infected at all, did we?”

The sermon presents Tamil Nadu’s survival during the pandemic as an act of divine protection, repeatedly crediting the “grace of Jesus” for keeping people safe.

But that raises a rather simple question: Can Jesus save you from COVID-19?

At a time when governments and health authorities were urging people to wear masks, avoid gatherings and follow precautions, Jegan’s message placed the emphasis elsewhere — on divine grace rather than the measures being promoted to contain the virus.

And his account of the December 31 prayer gathering makes the point even more starkly: restrictions were imposed elsewhere, people were warned against gathering, yet the fact that his congregation remained together without apparent infection was presented as evidence of divine protection.

Was it faith that stopped COVID-19 or was it simply that they got lucky?
