Within a week of 17 remand prisoners escaping from Thekkampatti Sub-Jail in Theni, another prisoner has escaped from police custody in Tamil Nadu, this time from Coimbatore Central Prison late Friday night, as reported in The New Indian Express.
The escaped prisoner, identified as Raghavan (25), a native of Bhavani in Erode district, has reportedly escaped from custody for the second time. Coimbatore City and Rural police have launched an intensive search following an alert from prison authorities. Five special teams have been formed to trace and arrest him.
According to police sources, Annur police in Coimbatore Rural district arrested Raghavan on Friday and brought him to Coimbatore Central Prison for the remand process. During the process, he allegedly pushed the police personnel guarding him and fled from the prison campus.
Raghavan had earlier been convicted in a theft case in Bengaluru a few months ago. He subsequently escaped from custody while being transported from Coimbatore. Annur police registered a case against him and arrested him in Bhavani on Friday. However, he managed to escape again before he could be lodged in prison.
The escape comes days after the breach at Thekkampatti Sub-Jail, where 17 remand prisoners escaped, triggering criticism over security arrangements in the prison department and a political controversy over the government’s handling of the incident.
