Dravidian Model Of Hypocrisy: After “Hindi Theriyathu Poda”, DMK IT Wing Handle Posts Job Ad For Hindi Content Writers

The DMK IT Wing’s recent job posting has ignited controversy and raised eyebrows due to an ironic requirement for Hindi Content Writers. The post on social media platform X said,

“Hurry up brothers and sisters! More than 50 jobs like Content Writer (Tamil/English/Hindi), Data Analyst, Research Analyst, Fact Checker, Web Developer/ Designer, Social Media Influencer, Social Media Manager, News Media Manager are waiting for you. Siblings interested in applying click on the LINK provided, or scan the QR CODE!”

The job announcement is seen as an attempt to counter the BJP’s strategy which has been exposing hate speeches of DMK leaders by subtitling them in Hindi and English.

This requirement has drawn attention and criticism from netizens because it appears contradictory to the DMK’s historical stance against the so-called “Hindi imposition“.

Here are a few instances that will help you understand the underlying hate for the language as well as the speakers of this language.

DMK’s Hatred For Hindi And Hindi Speakers

The hatred for Hindi goes back to the 30s when EV Ramasamy protested against it. An anti-Hindi agitation also took place in the 1960s when many young individuals passionately participated in protests against what they perceived as the forced imposition of Hindi. This anti-Hindi sentiment persists to this day.

The DMK had even come up with a T-shirt campaign called ‘Hindi Theriyathu Poda’ (“I don’t know Hindi, Get lost!”) in 2020, claiming to resist ‘Hindi imposition’. Political leaders, including DMK’s Udhayanidhi Stalin, have endorsed the campaign.

Tamil Kollywood celebrities joined the growing campaign in Tamil Nadu against Hindi imposition in India. The hashtag “Hindi Theriyadu Poda” trended on Twitter, sparked by a picture of music director Yuvan Shankar Raja and actor Shirish wearing T-shirts that proclaim “I am a Tamil Pesum Indian” (I am a Tamil-speaking Indian) and “Hindi Theriyadu Poda.”

In fact, the leader and cadres of DMK leave no opportunity to ridicule Hindi-speakers as paanipuri walas. Its own Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said that it is not necessary to learn Hindi as speakers of that language can be found selling only Pani Pooris. DMK MP from Dharmpuri had derogated north-Indian states especially the Hindi-belt states as ‘Cow Piss States’.

Those who belong to this category also openly display their dislike for the Indians from the North of our country and use slurs like “vadakkans” (meaning someone from the north) on them. Many YouTube channels aligned to the DMK post videos making fun of them. Some other slurs include panipuri seller and beedavaayan (one who eats beeda/tobacco all the time).

In 2021, DMK Minister for Municipal Administration, Urban & Water Supply KN Nehru, while addressing an employment camp at the DMK office in Trichy, said, “Biharis lack brain as Tamilians have. People from Bihar are not as intelligent as Tamilians.”

Another DMK MP and senior leader TKS Elangovan spread hatred against Hindi speakers, saying, “Hindi is the language of backward states, Hindi will make us Shudra.”

Dhayanidhi Maran, DMK MP, stated in a public meeting that people who learned Hindi work as construction workers and wash toilets in Tamil Nadu, whereas Tamilians hold high-level positions in the IT sector.

DMK Minister and currently the party’s IT wing head TRB Rajaa had spewed venom against north Indians umpteen number of time. He had once said ‘Vadakkans’ (slur for North Indian) don’t have a sense of democracy adding that Biharis will remain at the bottom because of their voting choices.

MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, himself has incited hatred against North Indians working in Tamil Nadu. He stated, while campaigning for the 2021 state assembly elections in Tiruvannamalai on March 25, 2021, “They’re conspiring to place Hindi-speaking youngsters in jobs in Tamil Nadu and grow BJP through that here. The Edappadi Palaniswami government may be a mute spectator to this. But DMK or Tamil Nadu people won’t let that happen.”

DMK’s Hindi Hypocrisy

Top leaders of the DMK and their family members have no qualms in embracing Hindi themselves. They run schools that teaches Hindi. More than 40 schools run by the DMK leaders or their relatives are affiliated to the CBSE and follow the three language policy with one of the languages being Hindi.  MK Stalin’s daughter, Senthamarai Sabarisan runs the Sunshine Senior Secondary School where Hindi is mandatory till class 8. This list originally released by Kathir News names 45 private CBSE/Matric schools run by DMK members that include Hindi in their curriculum.

Here is a list of schools run by them:

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva had sung a famous Hindi song ‘Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai’ at the farewell function of Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Red Giant Movies belonging to Udhayanidhi Stalin had distributed Amir Khan-starrer ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ in Tamil Nadu. This was the first Hindi film to be distributed by Red Giant Movies.

This raises questions about the DMK’s public stance against Hindi while its own schools teach the language. It is pretty clear that the party is using the anti-Hindi sentiment solely for political gain.

The DMK has shown its displeasure against the NEP and has not allowed its implementation in the state board schools nor are they keen on allowing Navodaya schools to function in Tamil Nadu.
