Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tamil Nadu state secretary P. Shanmugam on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, said the party would not participate in a meeting of parties supporting the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), as reported in Daily Thanthi.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Shanmugam said TVK representatives had invited the CPM to discuss the upcoming by-election, local body elections and parliamentary elections. He said the TVK side had also proposed the formation of a new alliance.
However, the CPM would not participate in the meeting of parties supporting the TVK, he said.
Shanmugam said the CPM would continue to offer suggestions to the government on issues concerning public welfare.
Shanmugam Criticises Vijay’s Assembly Speech
Reacting to Chief Minister Vijay’s speech during the reply to the Police Department demands in the Assembly, Shanmugam said the Chief Minister had spoken on issues unrelated to the subject.
He said Vijay had not answered even one of the questions raised by Opposition members.
“There are many places to speak. We do not accept the approach of speaking in the Assembly as though one can say everything that comes to mind,” Shanmugam said.
He also alleged that the Assembly had turned into a “fighting forum” and said people were watching the proceedings through the live broadcast.
“Unnecessary debates should not take place. The Assembly must function within its traditions. The time of the Assembly should be used properly without being wasted,” he said.
Calls for Ministers to Study MISA History
Shanmugam also criticised TVK Minister Nirmal Kumar’s remarks about arrests during the MISA period, calling them “childish”.
He said thousands of Communist leaders had been jailed during the MISA period and that there were extensive documents on the atrocities committed during that period.
“TVK ministers should read the history of the atrocities in MISA prisons,” Shanmugam said.
CPM’s Support for TVK Government Not Guaranteed
On the CPM’s position towards the TVK government, Shanmugam said the party’s support would continue from outside the government.
However, he said the CPM could not guarantee that it would support the TVK government for the full five-year term.
“We will decide whether to support them based on the stand taken by the TVK,” he said.
