TVK Finance Minister Marie Wilson has said actor Dhanush’s entry into politics would not be a political turning point but a reaction, adding that neither the DMK nor the AIADMK would be the main competition for the ruling TVK.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating an urban health centre in Chennai’s Tondiarpet, Wilson said the people of Tamil Nadu had already delivered a strong mandate and taught a lesson to the two Dravidian parties that had ruled the state for decades.
“The competition is not between the DMK and the AIADMK anymore,” he said, adding that the people had given a clear mandate.
Asked whether Dhanush could pose a challenge to Chief Minister Vijay, Wilson dismissed the suggestion.
“There is no question of anyone being a competitor to our leader. You can take that question back. He is the honourable Chief Minister, the one and only,” he said.
Wilson said that while anyone had the right to start a political party and contest elections in a democratic country, the impact of Dhanush’s political decision would become clear only with time.
“He is someone I know well. We are quite close. But he has taken a decision, and only the coming days will show whether that decision is right or wrong,” Wilson said.
When asked whether a campaign by superstar Rajinikanth in support of Dhanush could influence voters, Wilson pointed to past elections and the limits of celebrity influence.
“I have seen 1991, 1994, the 1993 parliamentary election, 1996 and other periods. Time will answer these questions. Time has already answered them for those people,” he said.
Referring to previous elections, including the 1999 parliamentary election, Wilson said voters had already shown whose support could translate into electoral gains.
“The people have already given their mandate completely. So, whoever campaigns, whatever happens, there is still time for all that,” he added.
