Dinamalar Chanakyaa Survey: NDA Leads In Tamil Nadu, EPS Emerges Top CM Choice

The second part of the Dinamalar-Chanakyaa opinion poll, conducted across Tamil Nadu in January 2026, reveals shifting political sentiments ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The survey covered 3,821 respondents across all regions of the state, from Kanyakumari to Tiruvallur, ensuring constituency-level representation without regional exclusions.

DMK Government Performance: Mixed Verdict

When respondents were asked whether the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government had fulfilled its election promises:

  • 16% said the government had fulfilled 100% of its promises.
  • 32% said the government had fulfilled none of its promises.
  • 52% said the government had fulfilled promises partially.

The survey noted visible dissatisfaction even among voters who supported DMK in the 2024 elections, indicating a perceptible shift in voter mood since then.

Corruption Perception Under DMK

On whether corruption has increased under the DMK government:

  • 51% of respondents said corruption has increased.
  • 16% said corruption does not exist at all.
  • 33% offered neutral responses, stating corruption exists everywhere or expressing uncertainty.

ED, IT, and CBI Actions

On whether enforcement actions against DMK leaders by central agencies were politically motivated:

  • 41% said the actions were justified.
  • 28% said they were acts of political vendetta by the BJP.
  • 31% had no opinion.
Public View On Vijay’s Political Entry

The survey assessed public perception of actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam:

  • 24% said Vijay’s political performance was entirely positive.
  • 34% felt his appeal was limited to cinema glamour rather than political leadership.
  • 42% said it was too early to form an opinion.

Notably, Vijay did not contest the 2024 Parliamentary elections, indicating that his current support base comprises new voters.

Alliance Preference for Vijay

When asked what political stand Vijay should take:

  • 58% said he should contest alone.
  • 30% favoured an alliance with the AIADMK-BJP combine.
  • 12% supported an alliance with the Congress.

The survey also suggested that voters do not expect Vijay and NTK leader Seeman to align in the upcoming election.

Best Opposition Party

Respondents identified the most effective opposition party as:

  • All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam – 51%
  • TVK – 22%
  • Bharatiya Janata Party – 14%
  • Naam Tamilar Katchi – 13%

The survey clarified that this does not directly translate to vote share, as even DMK supporters identified AIADMK as the strongest opposition.

Best Opposition Leader

On leadership preferences:

  • Edappadi K. Palaniswami – 52%
  • Vijay – 21%
  • Seeman – 13%
  • Nainar Nagendran – 8%

Interestingly, TVK’s party approval rating marginally exceeded Vijay’s personal leadership rating.

Preferred Chief Ministerial Candidate

When asked who respondents preferred as Chief Minister:

  • Edappadi K. Palaniswami – 33%
  • M. K. Stalin – 27%
  • Vijay – 24%
  • Seeman – 9%
If Elections Were Held Today

On the question of which alliance would win if elections were held immediately:

  • AIADMK-BJP alliance – 38%
  • DMK alliance – 33%
  • TVK – 22%
  • NTK – 7%

The survey was conducted shortly after Pongal, reflecting recent public sentiment.

The Dinamalar–Chanakyaa survey indicates a competitive three-cornered political landscape in Tamil Nadu, with the AIADMK-BJP alliance holding a narrow lead, DMK trailing closely, and TVK emerging as a significant third force. The final electoral outcome, however, will depend on evolving alliances, campaign strategies, and voter mobilisation as the 2026 Assembly elections approach.

Amit Behere: A Rabid Abusive Troll And A Nazi-Level Brahmin Hating Casteist Bigot

This is the comment that this foul-mouthed troll linked to AAP ecosystem had written while responding to a woman journalist who is a Brahmin.

Who Is Amit Behere?

Amit Behere is a social media user known for a long trail of abusive, inflammatory, and dehumanising posts directed at political opponents, religious groups, and caste communities.

He is listed as one of the sponsors of Aam Aadmi Party’s Mohalla Clinics. This troll is followed by many official functionaries of Congress like Sanjay Jha and Aam Admi Party.

His online activity has included celebrating deaths of political leaders, issuing explicit death wishes, and using slurs against BJP supporters, Hindus, and Brahmins. Behere has repeatedly framed such remarks as ideological expression, often doubling down when criticised. His posts have targeted elderly individuals, public figures, and entire communities with violent imagery and collective vilification. Despite the extremity of his language, he has remained visible within certain political-media circles, drawing scrutiny for how such rhetoric is normalised online.

Behere presents himself professionally as a software engineer and co-founder of Casaide Inc – as per his LinkedIn. According to his publicly available profile, he is a full-stack developer based in New York City, with prior work experience at major technology companies including Groupon, Netflix, and Yahoo. He is also listed as an alumnus of the University of California.

Despite a relatively limited public professional footprint, Behere has maintained an active presence online, where his posts and commentary have increasingly placed him under scrutiny beyond his stated professional background.

Let us now take a look at his language and the abuses he has made against other netizens and people.

Celebrating The Death Of A BJP Minister

Amit Behere openly celebrated the death of Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Chetan Chauhan, writing that he was glad the BJP leader had died. He went on to say that he was happy that “Chauhan, Parrikar, Jaitley” were all dead, and expressed a desire that others from the BJP meet the same fate.

Wishing Slow And Painful Death On BJP Supporters

In one of his most explicit statements, Behere wrote that he hoped BJP supporters would “suffer for days before doing us a favour and stopping breathing.” He later stated that he would celebrate the death of every “Nazi,” a term he repeatedly used to describe BJP members and supporters.

Calling For Violence Against “Sanghis”

Behere repeatedly used violent imagery against those he labels as “Sanghis.” In one tweet, he said that “Sanghis should be thrown in the gutter,” later doubling down by saying that even gutters did not deserve such “treatment.”

Targeting A 90-Year-Old Man For Being A ‘Bhakt’

Reacting to a post mentioning a 90-year-old man who watched Zee News and called himself a “proud Bhakt,” Behere responded by saying the elderly man should be “thrown in the gutter” after his death and that his family should explain to children why he was disposed of that way.

Rejoicing Over Deaths Of Political Leaders

Screenshots shared earlier by defence analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra showed Behere wishing a slow and painful death on senior BJP leaders, including Arun Jaitley, and stating that he would celebrate such deaths when they occurred.

Calling All Brahmins ‘Frauds’ And ‘Thieves’

In a separate set of tweets, Behere launched a caste-based tirade, stating categorically that “all Brahmins are frauds.” He went further to say, “Every Brahmin… who asks for money is a CONFIRMED fraud,” and referred to individuals as “textbook Brahmin thieves.”

Claiming ‘Brahminical Fraud’ As Inherent

Behere accused individuals of committing “Brahminical fraud,” asserting that Brahmin identity itself implied deceit and corruption, and claimed that Brahmins had been “for sale since millennia.”

Attacking Rahul Gandhi Using Caste Slurs

Even while targeting political allies, Behere attacked Rahul Gandhi by claiming he was a “failure” because he was a “Brahmin at heart,” using caste as an insult rather than a descriptor.

Hate For Marathi Brahmins

Amit Behere has repeatedly expressed hostility specifically directed at Marathi Brahmins.

Communalising A National Tragedy

Following a major plane crash that killed over 240 Indians, Behere tweeted, “Imagine if the pilot was a Muslim. Just imagine. And thank God he was not,” turning a national tragedy into a communal hypothetical and shifting focus away from victims to religious identity.

After facing backlash, Behere attempted to justify his statement by claiming such thoughts were “forced to cross our mind,” effectively deflecting responsibility for his own communal and hateful remarks.

Abusive Troll & Casteist Bigot – Amit Behere

The repeated pattern visible in Amit Behere’s online conduct is not an isolated lapse or momentary excess, but a sustained campaign of abuse marked by dehumanisation, caste hatred, communal insinuation, and open celebration of death. From targeting journalists for their caste identity to issuing death wishes against political opponents and entire communities, his rhetoric crosses from political disagreement into outright hate speech.

Don Bosco Land Scandal: Donor Demands For Congregational Enquiry Into Actions Of Former Provincials And Rector Of Don Bosco Egmore

Don-Bosco-Land-Scandal-Donor-Demands-For-Congregational-Enquiry-Into-Actions-Of-Former-Provincials-And-Rector-Of-Don-Bosco-Egmore

A bombshell dossier submitted to the Rector Major’s Office in Rome has ignited a firestorm within the Salesian Order, exposing what donors describe as a “monumental real estate fraud” and a “grotesque inversion” of the Don Bosco mission.

The donor family, which includes two senior clerics with decades of ecclesiastical service, has gone public with allegations that the Salesians of the Chennai Province systematically liquidated land donated for the poor to serve “vested interests.” These whistleblowers are now demanding a high-level Congregational Enquiry, specifically calling for an investigation into a “Who’s Who” of provincial leadership—including former Provincials and the current Rector of the prestigious Don Bosco Egmore.

The “27-Day Betrayal”: From Sacred Vows to Secret Sales

The scandal centers on a prime tract of land in Pannur, Tiruvallur, donated in July 2013 for the sole purpose of building an Engineering College for rural youth. The then-Provincial, Fr. Jayapalan Raphael, issued a signed and sealed certification on July 24, 2013, confirming the gift’s sacred purpose.

However, the dossier reveals a chilling timeline of deception:

  • July 24, 2013: The then-Provincial, Fr. Jayapalan Raphael, issues a signed and sealed certification confirming the land was donated solely for a rural Engineering College.

  • August 13, 2013: A public foundation stone laying ceremony is held, attended by family members from across the globe.

  • August 20, 2013: Just 27 days after the Provincial’s written assurance, a registered document was executed that stripped away all donor conditions. The family alleges this document was drafted in secret by Fr. Don Bosco and a private builder. The contents were neither shown nor read to the signatories before they signed; as the owners, the family was never given a draft for approval or a copy of the final document.

  • On the same day, Fr. Arokiya Doss, representing the Pannur Don Bosco Society, allegedly signed away the property via a General Power of Attorney to a private builder named Mr. Antony.

The Province allegedly kept these documents “secretly hidden” for over eleven years. They were only revealed in October 2024 after the family was shockingly informed they had “no claim” over their own property. The family describes this act as “mischief and forgery done with a dagger at our back”.

“Da Mihi Assets”: Nine Months to Total Liquidation

The investigative trail suggests the Province functioned less like a religious mission and more like a real estate brokerage. Registration records show the land was rapidly carved up and sold to private individuals.

Registration and encumbrance records reveal a chilling efficiency in the sale of the land. Within just nine months of the Power of Attorney being granted, the entire property was sold off in parts to private individuals.

  • Rapid Sales: Between January and May 2014, the land was systematically carved up and sold.
  • Market Disparity: Approximately 179,640 sq.ft. of land meant for the poor was liquidated for a recorded 14 Crore INR (approx. $1.6M USD).

“Don Bosco’s sacred charism, ‘Da mihi animas, caetera tolle’ (Give me souls, take away the rest), has been grotesquely inverted into ‘Da mihi assets’,” the family stated in their appeal. They describe a “moral collapse” that has seen donor trust traded for commercial profit.

The “Circle of Silence”: High-Ranking Salesians Named

The donors insist that a fraud of this magnitude could not have been carried out by a single individual. They are demanding that an congregational enquiry scrutinize the roles and financial trails of several high-ranking officials, including:

  • Fr. Don Bosco
  • Fr. Arokiya Doss
  • Fr. Jayapalan Raphael
  • Fr. Antonyraj Chinnappan
  • Fr. Sagayaraj Philominathan
  • Fr. Joe Deva
  • Fr. Xavier Packia
  • Fr. K. M. Jose
  • Fr. Edwin Vasanthan

Institutional Gaslighting and the Archbishop’s Failed Mediation

The dossier details a harrowing pattern of “institutional gaslighting.” In 2022, the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore mediated a settlement where the Province agreed to return equivalent land. The family accepted, but the Province—under its current leadership—allegedly reneged on the deal, later claiming the family had “no claim” over their own donated property.

The family also slammed the Regional Councillor for South Asia, Fr. Biju Michael, for a “violation of natural justice” after he directed the victims to seek a resolution from the very provincial authorities they are accusing.

A Formal Demand for Justice

The family’s appeal to the Rector Major is clear and uncompromising. They demand that the enquiry determine:

  • Authorization: Who authorized Fr. Arokiya Doss to nominate an outsider to exercise Power of Attorney over donor property, and is it an “acceptable practice” to permit the sale of contributions meant for a charitable purpose?
  • Institutional Silence: How and why the Chennai Province remained silent while the property was systematically sold off?
  • Control: Who exercised effective control over these specific real estate transactions?
  • Profiteering: The family expresses astonishment that the question of who benefited from the proceeds of these transactions has not yet been treated as a matter of serious concern by Salesian authorities.

With surviving family members now in their 60s and 80s, the demand for justice has reached a breaking point. The family warns that if the Salesian framework fails to provide accountability, they will seek justice through alternative legal frameworks.

The Pannur Land Scandal now stands as a defining test for the Rector Major in Rome: will the Order protect its power structure, or will it uphold the integrity of its founder?

“It Was In Their Times That This Country Became Worthless”: Congress-DMK Ally VCK MP Thirumavalavan Insults Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief and I.N.D.I. Alliance MP Thirumavalavan has sparked a controversy after launching a scathing attack on ancient Tamil rulers, including the Chola, Pandya, Chera and Pallava kings, during a recent public address.

In remarks that have drawn sharp reactions, Thirumavalavan rejected the reverence traditionally accorded to Tamil monarchs and blamed them for what he described as the cultural and linguistic decline of Tamil civilisation.

“I have no respect for any king. I do not see anyone as some great power. It was in the time of those kings that this country became worthless, became Sanskrit-ised, became Hindutva-ised,” he said.

Extending his criticism, the VCK leader accused the ancient rulers of sidelining Tamil from its religious and cultural centrality.

“It was in the time when these Pandya kings, Chola kings, Chera kings, Pallava kings ruled that Tamil, which was in the sanctum sanctorum of the Tamil temples, was thrown out,” Thirumavalavan alleged.

He further claimed that Tamil rulers adopted what he called “northern-language” influences and Brahminical rituals at the cost of native traditions.

“The one who conducted sacrificial rites, the one who did yajnas, changed Tamil names and attached northern-language names behind their own names,” he said.

Questioning the very names of some of the most celebrated Tamil emperors, Thirumavalavan asked: “Is ‘Rajaraja’ a Tamil name? Is ‘Rajendra’ a Tamil name? They are all people who put northern‑language names on themselves, who were mesmerised by the northern language (Sanskrit), who were lost in the sacrificial rituals and yajnas of Brahmins.”

He concluded by asserting that despite their reputation, these rulers bore responsibility for cultural erosion.

“Whatever great ‘king of kings’ they may have been, I am someone who has understood that they were the ones who paved the way for the destruction of our Tamil and the destruction of our culture,” he said.

It is noteworthy that the Chola and Pandya dynasties presided over periods when Tamil literature, temple architecture, inscriptions, administration and overseas cultural influence flourished far beyond the geographical boundaries of present-day Tamil Nadu.

The seems to also mark a shift in Thirumavalavan’s rhetoric. After blaming Sanatana Dharma, BJP and the RSS for everything under the sun, the MP has now turned his criticism towards kings who reigned over a millennium ago.

If the use of names such as “Rajaraja” and “Rajendra” is cited as evidence of cultural betrayal, one wonders whether contemporary political names like Karunanidhi, Stalin, Udhayanidhi, Dayanidhi and Kalanidhi (names from the DMK’s first family) would qualify as Tamil by the same standard.

“You Are Misusing Your Liberty”: Supreme Court Rejects Bail Relief For YouTuber Savukku Shankar

“You Are Misusing Your Liberty”: Supreme Court Rejects Bail Relief for Savukku Shankar

The Supreme Court of India refused to interfere with the bail conditions imposed by the Madras High Court on YouTuber and Shankar @Savukku Shankar, while upholding the interim bail granted to him in connection with allegations of assault and extortion levelled by a film producer.

A Bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma declined to entertain a Special Leave Petition filed by Shankar seeking modification of the stringent conditions imposed by the High Court.

“This Man Is Coming Every Week Before Us”

At the outset of the hearing, Justice Satish Chandra Sharma made sharp oral observations on Shankar’s repeated approaches to the apex court.

“This man is coming every week before us. His laptop is seized, he does not file an application before the Magistrate for release of laptop. He comes to the Supreme Court. His phone is seized, he comes to the Supreme Court for release of phone. These kinds of things are happening,” Justice Sharma remarked.

Justice Dipankar Datta reminded Shankar’s counsel, Balaji Srinivasan, that bail had been granted only on limited grounds.

“Mr Balaji, you were granted bail on medical grounds,” Justice Datta said.

Bail Was Not on Merits, Court Says

Although Balaji Srinivasan disputed this, contending that the High Court had criticised the State police for targeting Shankar, Justice Datta reiterated the basis of the relief.

“You were not granted bail on merits but on medical grounds,” Justice Datta said.

The judge further noted that Shankar’s conduct after release did not align with the purpose for which bail was granted.

“After going out on bail, you were treated as out patients and thereafter you start making reels and videos and putting it on Youtube. That was not the purpose of the grant of bail. You are misusing your liberty, that is the finding given by the High Court. Now, your bail has not been cancelled, but the High Court has asked you not to talk about pending [case] but you are doing that,” Justice Datta observed.

Police Say Bail Was Misused

Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for the State of Tamil Nadu, submitted that Shankar had failed to cooperate with the investigation.

He told the court that the police required Shankar’s mobile phone for investigation, which he did not hand over. Instead, after being released on bail, Shankar allegedly made a video showcasing the same device.

Luthra further submitted that Shankar did not pursue the medical treatment for which interim bail was granted.

To this, Justice Sharma remarked tersely: “Because he was busy making reels.”

High Court’s Directions Remain Intact

Earlier, the Madras High Court, while refusing to cancel Shankar’s interim bail, had imposed strict conditions. It barred him from making any statement, directly or indirectly, related to the case, including remarks against the conduct of police officers. He was also restrained from interacting with or intimidating co-accused or witnesses.

The High Court further restricted Shankar’s movement, permitting travel only for medical treatment or legal consultation, and warned that any violation of the conditions would be viewed seriously.

Medical Board Ordered

The Tamil Nadu Police had sought cancellation of bail, alleging misuse of liberty. The Inspector of Police, Saidapet Police Station, informed the court that after securing interim bail on medical grounds, Shankar had visited a cardiologist at Kauvery Hospital only once, on December 30, as an outpatient, and had not pursued any further treatment.

The officer also pointed out that Shankar had uploaded eight videos of around 60 minutes each after his release, suggesting that his plea of serious medical incapacity was exaggerated.

The police submitted that the claim of specialised medical treatment was merely a ruse to evade the law.

While refusing to cancel bail, a Madras High Court bench comprising Justice P Velmurugan and Justice M Jothiraman directed the Dean of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital to constitute a Medical Board to assess Shankar’s health.

Shankar has been directed to appear before the Medical Board on February 2, with the Board instructed to submit its report in a sealed cover to the High Court on 3 February 2026.

“This Is Too Much”

When Shankar’s counsel objected to appearing before the Medical Board at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, citing apprehensions based on a previous medical opinion being changed, Justice Datta rejected the argument outright.

“This is too much. How can you discredit doctors? You are saying you will not go to this hospital, so you will choose which medical board you will go to after?” Justice Datta said.

Earlier Pleas Rejected

On January 20, the same Supreme Court bench had refused to entertain Shankar’s plea seeking to unseal his office in Chennai and to direct the Tamil Nadu Police to return electronic devices seized during the investigation.

Background of the Case

Shankar was arrested on December 13 under Sections 296(b), 353(lxc), 308(5), 61(2), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Interim bail was granted in a petition filed by his mother, Kamala, who alleged that her son was falsely implicated through a fabricated financial transaction. She claimed that on December 12, a day before the arrest, an employee of Shankar’s media company had received ₹94,000 via GPay from an unknown person, and while the employee was preparing to lodge a complaint, the police arrested Shankar.

It was contended that the transaction was an orchestrated trap to falsely implicate him.

Kamala also sought directions for specialised medical care for her son, including evaluation by a cardiologist and diabetologist, and filed a habeas corpus petition objecting to his alleged isolation in prison.

With this order, the Supreme Court has effectively endorsed the Madras High Court’s view, leaving the bail conditions unchanged.

“We’re Having Loose Motions, Stalin Is Trying To Kill Us With This Food”, Tirunelveli Sanitation Workers Dump Foul-Smelling Stale Breakfast Given To Them Under DMK Govt Scheme

“They Think We Are Slaves to Food, Stalin Is Trying To Kill Us With This Food”, Tirunelveli Sanitation Workers Dump Foul Breakfast, Allege Illness

Anger among sanitation workers in Tirunelveli escalated after breakfast supplied under a State government scheme was found to be foul-smelling, watery and allegedly caused illness, prompting workers to dump the food in garbage bins and publicly accuse authorities of treating them with contempt.

The free breakfast scheme for sanitation workers was announced by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and has been implemented in the Tirunelveli Municipal Corporation for over a month, covering more than 750 workers across four zones. However, workers say the scheme has become a source of distress rather than relief.

“There Is Absolutely No Quality”

Sanitation workers in the Thachanallur zone said the food supplied on Tuesday emitted a foul odour and was unfit for consumption.

“The food has no quality. There is absolutely no quality. We are having loose motions. It is like this. We have to just throw it away,” a worker said.

Another worker alleged that instead of addressing their long-standing demand for higher wages, the administration was offering substandard food as a substitute.

“When we ask for a salary hike, they give us food. They think we are slaves to food. I don’t know when they decided that sanitation workers should be treated like this,” the worker said.

Pointing to the food served, workers described its condition in detail.

“Look here, see how this food is. You can’t tell when it was cooked. Water is oozing out. Look here, see how the food is. It is watery, just watery. Look at the sambar here. It is watery, watery food. The food is at the bottom of the plate,” one of them said.

Allegations of Illness After Consuming Food

A sanitation worker recounted falling seriously ill after consuming breakfast provided during the initial days of the scheme.

“Sir, on the first day they gave pongal. After eating that, I kept vomiting and purging. I had to take a week’s leave and lie at home. I told them that day itself: ‘Sir, the food is not okay at all. We don’t want this food,’” the worker said.

According to the worker, officials dismissed the complaint.

“They said, ‘No, as our duty we will give you the food. You can throw it away or do whatever you want, we don’t care. We just have to show it in the records that we gave it,’” the worker alleged.

Since then, workers said they have been routinely discarding the meals.

“We couldn’t do anything. We just take it and keep throwing it away. Till yesterday, that is all we have been doing – taking it and throwing it away. This kind of food, we would rather buy and eat from a shop,” the worker said.

“For Three Days, the Same Watery Food”

Another sanitation worker said the same poor-quality food had been supplied repeatedly.

“For three days they have been giving only this food. For three days, the same food. This pongal here – no, it is upma – this doesn’t even have any consistency. It is just watery. Watery. It has a bad smell,” the worker said.

The worker also questioned the cost and priorities behind the scheme.

“For one meal it is 100 rupees. For this food they are giving us, our salary… Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has given us free breakfast. It has been one month of this. For one month we have been eating this breakfast. But after eating it for a month, we have been spending all our money only in hospitals,” the worker alleged.

Displaying the meal to reporters, the worker added: “Look here, see this food here. This is how it is. This is the morning food. See here, how this food is.”

Wage Demand, Not Food

Workers stressed that their protest was not against welfare measures but against what they described as misplaced priorities.

“They are trying to kill us with this kind of food,” a worker said, naming the Chief Minister. “We are not coming here for food. We have come asking, ‘Increase our salary and give.’ They give us a salary of 540 rupees. We are asking them, ‘Give us 700 or 800 rupees salary.’ But instead of raising our salary, they are cheating us by giving this food.”

“There Is No Religion Called Hindu”, Says DMK Ally Karunas

DMK ally and actor-turned-politician Karunas has triggered controversy after making remarks questioning the existence of Hinduism as a religion during a recent public meeting.

Addressing the gathering, Karunas said he was prepared to stand by his views irrespective of criticism.

“I am saying this, I am ready to face anything, there is no religion called Hindu,” he said.

Questioning the identity associated with Hinduism, Karunas went on to describe his own religious affiliation.

“Then what is Hindu? Who am I? I belong to the Saiva religion. I have worshipped Shiva and Murugan from ancient times, for countless generations,” he said.

Listing various religious traditions followed in India, Karunas argued that Hinduism did not exist as a distinct religion in the way it is presently understood.

“Like this, in India there are so many religions. There is Buddhism. There is Saivism. There is Jainism. There is Vaishnavism. I can keep listing them. There is Parsi. There is Islam. There is Christianity. There are so many religions like this,” he said.

He then questioned the historical origins of the term “Hindu”.

“When that is the case, where did this ‘Hindu’ come from?” Karunas asked.

Referring to the colonial period, he attributed the usage of the term to British administrative practices.

“When the British ruled our India, for administrative purposes, for government administration, since this is a country where many languages are spoken and many religions are worshipped by the people, therefore for the convenience of administration…” he said, trailing off without completing the sentence.

Kanagasabai Darshan Issue At Chidambaram Temple Being Politicised, Podhu Dikshitars Tell Madras High Court

The Podhu Dikshitars told the Madras High Court that the controversy surrounding Kanagasabai darshan at the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple was being politicised, even though the Supreme Court had clearly held that State governments cannot interfere in the affairs of temples belonging to a specific religious denomination.

The submission was made during the resumed hearing of a petition filed by the Podhu Dikshitars challenging a Government Order issued by the Tamil Nadu government on 15 May 2022, permitting devotees to climb onto the Kanagasabai mandapam and offer prayers.

Supreme Court Rulings Cited

The case came up before a Division Bench comprising Justice R Suresh Kumar and Justice S Soundar.

Senior counsel C.S. Vaidyanathan and K. Harishankar, appearing for the Podhu Dikshitars, contended that the issue was no longer merely administrative but had been turned into a political controversy. They pointed out that the Supreme Court of India, including in recent judgments, had unequivocally ruled that the State has no authority to interfere in the internal matters of temples administered by a particular denomination.

The counsel sought an adjournment of the hearing to enable them to place detailed arguments on record, particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s consistent jurisprudence on denominational temple rights.

HR&CE Department Denies Politicisation

Opposing the plea, Special Government Pleader Arun Natarajan, appearing for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, denied the allegation that the issue was being politicised.

He argued that intervention by the department had become necessary due to the alleged failure of the Podhu Dikshitars to properly discharge their administrative responsibilities at the temple.

The HR&CE counsel further submitted that if the court was inclined to adjourn the matter, arrangements at the temple should be modified to facilitate better crowd management. Specifically, he suggested that in addition to the existing single entry-and-exit route for Kanagasabai darshan, an alternative pathway should also be opened so that the number of devotees accessing the Kanagasabai could be assessed.

Court Declines HR&CE Suggestion

The Bench, however, declined to accept the HR&CE Department’s suggestion regarding opening an additional pathway. Without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case at this stage, the judges adjourned the hearing to February 19.

The matter continues to attract attention due to its implications for denominational temple rights, the limits of State intervention in religious affairs, and the broader debate over the role of the government in temple administration.

“When Did It Happen?”: DMK Min Ma Subramanian’s Response To Brutal Murder Of Bihari Family Sparks Outrage

“When Did It Happen?”: DMK Min Ma Subramanian's Response To Brutal Murder Of Bihari Family Sparks Outrage

DMK Health Minister Ma Subramanian has come under sharp criticism following his response to questions from reporters about the brutal murder of a Bihari migrant worker, his wife and their child in Chennai’s Taramani area.

When journalists raised the issue during a press interaction in Chennai, the Minister’s first response was not to condemn the crime but to ask a counter-question.

“When did it happen?” Ma Subramanian asked.

Reporters then explained that the murders had been identified the previous day, adding that the bodies of the husband and the child had already been recovered.

“The wife’s body is in the Perungudi garbage yard. They say the wife’s body is there and the police are searching even today morning,” a reporter said.

The Minister responded by asking if the incident had taken place in Taramani and was told that it had. Journalists also pointed out that police officials had confirmed that an investigation was underway.

Minister Deflects to AIADMK Era

When asked about criticism by AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who had said that Tamil Nadu had become a State where no one was safe, the DMK Minister shifted focus to the previous regime.

“You yourselves will clearly feel how there was good security when Edappadi Palaniswami was there. It was during the time when Edappadi Palaniswami was Chief Minister that a hundred such incidents were happening every single day,” Ma Subramanian said.

He went on to claim that merely listing crimes reported during the AIADMK’s tenure would require volumes of documentation.

“If I list only the incidents that appeared in your own media and newspapers during those four years, we would have to put out a hundred-page book for each day,” he said, before adding, “Leave that aside, what he is saying…”

The Minister asserted that law and order in the State was largely under control at present.

“Today, by and large, law and order is secure. As far as these issues that arise out of personal enmities are concerned, the police are taking major action and are punishing the culprits, as our RTG has said,” he claimed.

Nandanam Sexual Assault Incident Raised, Minister Says He “Did Not See It”

Reporters then flagged another serious incident, pointing out that even on the same morning, a 22-year-old woman had allegedly been subjected to sexual abuse at the Nandanam Government College campus.

Asked how the government viewed such incidents occurring in quick succession, the Minister responded: “To be honest, I did not see it; after seeing it (news), then asked me what happened.”
