A woman from Thiruvotriyur in Chennai has alleged that a local TVK functionary demanded ₹50,000 from her to allow the construction of her new house to continue, claiming that the accused repeatedly threatened her and disrupted the work for three consecutive days.
Speaking to the media, the woman made an emotional appeal to TVK president Joseph Vijay, alleging that despite struggling to build a house through borrowed money, she was being subjected to intimidation and extortion.
Addressing Vijay directly, she said, “Sir, why are they treating us like this? We are ordinary people. I am building a house after taking loans. Please come and see my situation.”
The woman said she hails from Thiruvotriyur in Chennai district and had recently begun constructing a house after facing years of financial hardship. According to her, there had earlier been a dispute relating to the property, but it had been resolved. However, she alleged that a new problem arose when a person identified as Rahul, who she claimed had recently become a local TVK office-bearer, began demanding money.
“He told me that I could continue building my house only if I paid him ₹50,000. For the past three days, he has been threatening me. The construction workers have been forced to stop work repeatedly because of his interference,” she alleged.
The woman said she works as a daily wage labourer and has taken loans to construct the house. She stated that she and her husband were struggling to raise three children while living separately because they could not afford a rented house together.
“I have borrowed money at interest to build this house. Where will I go if I have to pay ₹50,000? If they need money, they should earn it elsewhere. Why are they demanding it from people like us?” she said.
She further alleged that because work had been repeatedly halted over the past three days, she had still been forced to pay the daily wages of the construction workers despite little or no work being carried out.
“I am paying the workers ₹1,300 to ₹1,400 a day. They have not been able to work because of the constant interruptions, but I still have to pay them. How can I also arrange ₹50,000?” she asked.
The woman claimed the accused was not even from her locality but from a neighbouring area. “He has recently become a functionary in the TVK. Why should I pay him? I don’t even know who asked him to collect this money,” she alleged.
According to her, the accused approached her directly and made the demand rather than sending anyone else. She also alleged that he repeatedly harassed her over the last three days.
The woman said she leaves for work at around 7 AM and returns only by 7 PM. She stated that she works at Kumari Bangaru and that her children are currently staying separately with relatives because the family does not have a permanent home.
“My children are living separately at my mother’s house, my sister’s house and my sister-in-law’s house. How long can we keep living like this? We cannot even afford the rent,” she said.
She also claimed that she had approached the local police station to lodge a complaint. According to her, police informed her that no formal complaint had yet been received, following which she submitted a written petition.
“I told the police I could not bear this harassment anymore. My children are studying. We are only trying to build a house so that we can live together as a family,” she said.
The woman further alleged that similar problems had occurred in the past. Referring to an earlier dispute, she claimed that another individual had previously taken ₹5 lakh from her.
She said her family currently pays around ₹7,000 in monthly rent in addition to electricity charges while surviving on daily wage earnings.
“My daughter is studying in college. We are somehow managing our household expenses. How can we pay rent, electricity bills, educate our children and also pay ₹50,000 to someone who is demanding money?” she asked.
