How The Congress & The BJP Handle Media

Recent events have illuminated the contrasting approaches of Congress and BJP to handling media controversies and public apologies, revealing significant differences in their respective methods and attitudes towards democratic practices.

Congress’s ‘Democratic Model Of Press Freedom’

A recent controversy involving Congress and India Today anchor Rahul Kanwal illustrates how Congress approaches criticism by journalists.

According to Pawan Khera of Congress, Rahul Kanwal “met” with top Congress leaders, including the President and General Secretary of Media, Communications, and Publicity, to address concerns stemming from a controversial debate on his show involving remarks by a BJP spokesperson about former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The Congress party found these remarks disrespectful and offensive, leading to criticism of Kanwal’s handling of the discussion. Kanwal met with Congress officials to clarify his stance, distance himself from the contentious remarks, and reaffirm his commitment to responsible journalism.

The Congress party, satisfied with his clarification, has expressed readiness to resume participation in his shows.

Khera wrote on his X handle, “Mr @rahulkanwal met the Hon’ble Congress President, the General Secy Media, Communications and Publicity and the Chairman, Media, Communications and Publicity to clarify his position on the matter pertaining to the debate on Late Smt Indira Gandhi and Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi and dissociating himself from the obnoxious views expressed by the BJP spokesperson on that occasion. Having heard his point of view, we think it is time to move on and start participating in his shows.”

Critics see the Congress’s approach as an attempt to exert pressure and control over media figures, demanding clarification and apologies. This tactic raises concerns about the party’s willingness to use its influence to coerce public figures into compliance. Instead of resolving issues through dialogue and constructive engagement, Congress appears to use its authority to impose its stance, seemingly as a threat rather than a resolution invitation.

BJP’s ‘Dictatorial Model Of Press Freedom’

In stark contrast, the BJP demonstrates a more ‘democratic’ approach to media interactions, or as critics might call it, a soft-handed, submissive approach. Consider the case of Rajdeep Sardesai, who was involved in a controversy for allegedly insulting BJP spokesperson Shazia Ilmi. Despite a High Court ruling requiring the removal of Sardesai’s tweet, he did not issue a public apology. Yet, the BJP continues to engage in debates and discussions hosted by Sardesai.

Is the BJP projecting an image of dissociating itself from the issues its party members face? Are they left to fend for themselves? This response highlights the BJP’s soft or submissive approach that disregards the party members’ sentiments. Does the BJP’s decision to keep participating in Sardesai’s media platforms show tolerance for differing opinions? Or is it using the platforms to portray itself as a soft figure? Is it good to keep terming this benign approach as a masterstroke every time?

The contrasting strategies of Congress and BJP in handling media controversies highlight the different attitudes of both national parties.

While press freedom is vital to our democracy, critics believe holding the media accountable is essential. The press cannot get away quickly, especially when it spreads propaganda against the nation or the government to a global audience.

Khalistani Sympathizing Jagmeet Singh’s NDP Pulls Out Of Justin Trudeau’s Govt

Khalistani Sympathizing Jagmeet Singh's NDP Pulls Out Of Justin Trudeau's Govt

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing a major political setback after the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh, withdrew its support from his minority government. The NDP had been essential in helping Trudeau maintain power. However, Singh recently terminated their 2022 agreement, citing dissatisfaction with Trudeau’s response to critical issues like rising grocery prices and corporate influence.

Despite the NDP’s withdrawal, Trudeau has ruled out early elections and remains committed to advancing social programs. In a social media video, Singh expressed disappointment with the prime minister, accusing him of prioritizing corporate interests over the public’s needs. He also confirmed his intention to run for prime minister in the next election.

Trudeau, who has been in power since 2015, is under growing pressure from the opposition Conservatives, who have criticized him for high inflation and a housing crisis. With the NDP pulling out of the “supply and confidence” deal, Trudeau must now rely on support from opposition lawmakers to pass confidence votes when parliament resumes on September 16. The Conservatives may push for a no-confidence vote, though the NDP could potentially abstain, allowing Trudeau’s government to survive.

The original 2022 deal between the NDP and the Liberals promised to keep Trudeau in power until mid-2025 in exchange for progress on NDP priorities like dental care for low-income families and a national pharmaceutical care plan. However, internal frustrations within the NDP leadership led to their withdrawal.

While this NDP withdrawal does not immediately lead to an election, Trudeau’s government now faces a more fragile position in parliament. Singh has indicated he may still support the Liberals on specific confidence measures, giving Trudeau room to navigate the political landscape. Meanwhile, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Singh’s move, urging him to commit to a total no-confidence vote.

Who Is Jagmeet Singh?

Jagmeet Singh, crucial in supporting Trudeau’s government, has led the NDP since 2017, succeeding Tom Mulcair. He is the first person from a visible minority group to head a major Canadian federal political party. Before entering federal politics, Singh served as a Provincial Parliament (MPP) member in Ontario from 2011 to 2017. He later became the MP for Burnaby South in British Columbia in 2019.

Singh advocates for progressive policies such as affordable housing, climate action, healthcare reform, and addressing income inequality. Under his leadership, the NDP has also championed racial justice, indigenous rights, and the fight against systemic racism in Canada. Singh partnered with Trudeau in 2021 to help form a minority government after being a rival.

Singh married fashion designer Gurkiran Kaur in 2018 and welcomed their first child in 2022.

Singh’s Frustrations With Trudeau’s Govt And NDP Future Ambitions

Although Singh played a pivotal role in Trudeau’s government, his frustration with the prime minister has grown. In a viral video, Singh criticized Trudeau for the rising cost of groceries and accused him of yielding to corporate greed. This video has been interpreted as a signal of Singh’s potential bid for the prime ministership, as he remarked that Trudeau’s government no longer deserved another chance.

Controversies Surrounding Singh’s Support for Khalistan

Jagmeet Singh has been embroiled in controversy due to his vocal support for the Khalistan movement, which has led to accusations that Trudeau’s government supported Khalistani elements within Canada. With Trudeau relying on Singh’s backing, he faced criticism for not challenging Singh’s anti-India stance.

Singh’s links to Khalistani leaders became apparent after he was elected NDP leader. This link emerged most notably when journalist Terry Milewski questioned him about Sikh gurdwaras in Canada displaying posters of Talwinder Singh Parmar, the mastermind behind the 1985 Air India bombing. Singh also defended Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar after Trudeau accused India of being involved in his killing. In response, Singh issued a strong statement, vowing to pursue justice and hold Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi accountable.

BJP’s Raama Sreenivasan Hits Back At AIADMK’s Jayakumar, Defends BJP’s Impact In Tamil Nadu And Challenges AIADMK In Upcoming Elections

BJP’s Raama Sreenivasan Hits Back At AIADMK’s Jayakumar, Defends BJP’s Impact In Tamil Nadu And Challenges AIADMK In Upcoming Elections

State General Secretary of the BJP, Raama Sreenivasan, has delivered a fitting counter to D. Jayakumar, the Organizing Secretary of the AIADMK and former minister. Sreenivasan pointed out that the AIADMK’s achievement of securing 65 MLA seats in 2021 was primarily due to the support provided by the BJP.

Sreenivasan was responding to a question on the challenge posed by former minister D. Jayakumar three weeks ago. Jayakumar had dared the BJP to win a single seat in the 2026 elections. He mocked the party by claiming that the BJP only secured four seats in Tamil Nadu due to the AIADMK’s support. In a recent interview, Raama Sreenivasan addressed Jayakumar’s challenge, using the latest 2024 Lok Sabha data to counter him.

Sreenivasan questioned, “In how many segments did the ADMK come first among the 234 assembly segments? Not even 20, do you agree? However, they have 65 MLA’s in the assembly, right? The ADMK should have come first among the MLA’s and the former ministers in the parliament elections, right? Why did they not come first? It is because the BJP was not with them. What was the vote percentage you got when you stood with the BJP and what was the vote percentage when you came out from the BJP alliance? Please tell, announce this publicly. You got 23% as an alliance, so shall I say that the 65 MLA’s are BJP’s alms?

Raama Sreenivasan further criticized the AIADMK, accusing them of believing that by attacking the BJP and portraying Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the real adversary, they could consolidate and gain the trust of the 13% minority vote bank. He argued that this strategy was misguided and that the minority votes did not support the AIADMK, despite their alliance with the SDPI.

Sreenivasan also highlighted that, despite defeating Jayakumar’s son in South Chennai, who lost his deposit in the Lok Sabha election and pushing the AIADMK to third place in Madurai, despite the efforts of sitting MLA Sellur Raju, the AIADMK has failed to acknowledge their shortcomings.

In all these constituencies, the BJP secured the second spot. Sreenivasan challenged the AIADMK to recognize the BJP’s growth and dared them to see who truly has the strength in the upcoming elections.

In a press briefing on 21 August 2024, former AIADMK minister D. Jayakumar remarked that Annamalai appears to be under the impression that he and his allies can secure major political victories. Jayakumar noted that the DMK is backing the BJP-led central government due to its own legal issues. He questioned whether the BJP could stand independently and win even a single constituency in the 2026 assembly elections. Jayakumar found it both amusing and strange that the BJP, which lacks a solid foundation and significant influence, is engaging in dispute with the AIADMK.

Jayakumar remarked, “It hasn’t sprouted three leaves, within that it raises the question towards the two leaves means… the party has been around for over 50 years, and ruled for 31 years, in this situation if we say we put alms it wont be dignified, but with our support, you were able to secure four seats in the state assembly. Could you win a seat in the 2026 assembly election on your own? You can’t. Likewise, the BJP,  who couldn’t stand alone, lacked influence, and was without anything, speaking about us was bizarrely amusing.”

NGO Watchdog Files Complaint Against Child Haven India For Misusing Foreign Funds

The Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF) has filed a formal complaint with the Ministry of Home Affairs, accusing Child Haven International (India) of financial misappropriation involving foreign funds. Based in Hyderabad, the organisation has raised serious concerns about the misuse of funds intended for child welfare activities.

The complaint, addressed to the Joint Secretary of the Foreigners-II division at the Ministry of Home Affairs, details allegations that Child Haven International (India) sold a property in Rangareddy District, Telangana, for a fraction of its market value. The property, originally purchased with foreign contributions in 1990, was reportedly sold to M/s Bollineni Casting and Steel Limited for just ₹2.25 crores, despite being valued at approximately ₹30 crores.

The LRPF’s letter, claims that the sale, which took place on June 21, 2023, raises suspicions of collusion and possible fraudulent activity between the society’s office bearers and M/s Bollineni Casting and Steel Limited. The property, which covers 3332 square yards, was later resold to Catalyst Trusteeship Limited in 2024 for the full market value of ₹30 crores, further fueling allegations of financial misconduct.

The LRPF has also expressed concerns that the funds from the initial sale may not have been deposited into the society’s designated FCRA bank account, as required by law, and could have been misused. The organization has called for a special audit and urged the Ministry to refer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough investigation.

In light of these allegations, the LRPF has requested that Child Haven International (India)’s FCRA license be suspended until the investigation is complete.

This complaint adds to the growing scrutiny of NGOs and their management of foreign funds, particularly in cases where significant financial discrepancies are reported. The Ministry of Home Affairs is expected to take appropriate action in response to the allegations.

Congress MLA Criticizes DMK’s Superficial Patchwork On Roads Ahead Of Transport Minister Visit

Congress MLA Criticizes DMK’s Superficial Patchwork On Roads Ahead Of Transport Minister Visit

In Kanyakumari district, Congress MLA Tharahai Cuthbert halted state road repair work ahead of a DMK transport minister’s visit, stating that the road should be fully constructed rather than a temporary patchwork.

Tharahai Cuthbert, recently elected as the MLA for the Vilavancode assembly constituency in the 2024 by-election, inspected her constituency on 3 September 2024.

During her visit, she observed contractors performing patchwork on the highway in preparation for DMK Public Works and Highways Minister EV Velu’s visit scheduled for 4 August 2024.

The Kuzhithurai highway, previously riddled with potholes, was being patched up hastily for the minister’s visit. Cuthbert had initially planned to bring the road’s dire condition to Minister Velu’s attention, but the contractor’s rushed repairs led her to intervene.

Cuthbert objected the contractors and workers of these superficial repairs, arguing that they were inadequate given the road’s poor condition, which had already resulted in several fatal accidents. She criticized the practice of merely patching up the road and instructed the workers to cease their efforts, insisting that a complete repair should be undertaken after the minister’s visit.

Tharahai confronted the contractors, asking, “If we kept the road for construction, is this the way you do? Who instructed you to do this?” The contractor responded that it was directed by the highways department. Tharahai replied, “I will speak with the highways department about this. We had intentionally left the road in its current state for the minister to see, tomorrow he is arriving. For all these days it was like this, even the road has seen two to three fatalities, why are you only doing patchwork now? Stop the work  today. You can resume it after the minister has inspected the road.”

The Congress MLA Cuthbert’s actions have sparked considerable attention on social media, and Cuthbert’s actions spotlighting the DMK’s failure to address critical infrastructure problems adequately and prioritize temporary fixes over comprehensive road repairs.

Similarly, Congress MP Vijay Vasanth has also addressed Tamil Nadu Public Works and Highways Minister EV Velu with a formal petition. MP Vasanth, who is responsible to the welfare activities in the Kanyakumari district, personally met with Minister Velu to discuss the construction of a railway flyover in the Viricode area. Vasanth emphasized that this project is crucial to meet the demands of the local residents and to ensure that their daily lives are not disrupted. Additionally, he urged the minister to reconsider and potentially abandon the current plans for the flyover project.

Trichy Govt Doctor Samson Daniel Arrested Under POCSO Act For Sexually Assaulting Minors At School Hostel

Police Hunt For Absconding Former DMK Union Secretary Accused Of Sexually Harassing Schoolgirls In Trichy

On 3 September 2024, Dr. S. Samson Daniel (31), a government doctor, was arrested under the POCSO Act on allegations of sexually assaulting minor girls at a hostel affiliated with a government-aided school in Trichy. His mother, S. Grace Sagayarani (54), who is the headmistress of the school, was also taken into custody for allegedly helping to cover up the offenses.

Daniel, from Palakkarai in Trichy, was employed as a doctor at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Anbil near Lalgudi. He frequently visited the school hostel under the pretense of conducting health checkups. During these visits, he is accused of inappropriately touching girls aged between five and ten. A concerned parent reported this abuse to the childline helpline, 1098.

Following the report, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Rahul Gandhi, District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) Vijayalakshmi, and two social workers visited the hostel on 2 August 2024. They interviewed 42 children, who revealed that Daniel had been assaulting them during his health checkups over the past few months. Based on their findings, the Fort All Women Police arrested the doctor under the POCSO Act, and the investigation is ongoing.

On 4 September 2024, while being taken to the hospital for a medical examination before his court appearance, the doctor verbally abused the media and attempted to attack them. The police intervened and successfully restrained Daniel before proceeding to the hospital.

The charges against Dr. Samson Daniel and his mother, S. Grace Sagayarani, are reminiscent of the RG Kar incident. In both instances, individuals entrusted with the care and safety of vulnerable girls/women were accused of blatant crimes. The RG Kar case, involving the rape and murder of a female resident doctor, highlighted the pervasive issue of sexual violence within healthcare institutions.

Similarly, the allegations against Dr. Daniel expose the potential for abuse to occur even within seemingly safe spaces like schools. Sadly, there is no outrage from the civil society to seek justice for the Trichy hostel’s students who that doctor abused.

AIADMK Spokie Kovai Sathyan Blasts DMK Over Chennai F4 Race, Questions Udhayanidhi’s Motives

AIADMK Spokie Kovai Sathyan Blasts DMK Over Chennai F4 Race, Questions Udhayanidhi's Motives

AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan has strongly criticized the DMK regime for the recently concluded Formula 4 race in Chennai. Sathyan expressed skepticism about the motives behind the event, raising serious concerns and questioning its purpose. He asserted that the race appeared to be a strategic move by Udhayanidhi Stalin to venture into the race car business rather than genuine concern for the sport.

Kovai Sathyan, through his official X account, posted a video raising several questions about the recent Formula 4 race in Chennai. His first question addressed by party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami inquired why a new racing event was conducted when there is already a racing ground in Irungattukottai. Sathyan questioned the necessity of blocking pathways to hospitals and railway stations for this event and is awaiting a response.

In his second point, Sathyan referred to an article published on 13 August 2024, in an English newspaper, which reported that javelin athletes at the National Javelin Day competition in Tirupur on 2 August 2024, were forced to compete on a poorly maintained mud track, raising concerns about safety and potential injuries. He criticized the lack of proper facilities for track and field events, such as javelin, shot put, and discus throw, emphasizing that these sports require synthetic tracks for adequate practice.

Kovai Sathyan noted that while Nehru Stadium, established by J. Jayalalithaa is used for football due to ongoing work, there are no alternative grounds available for track and field sports. Despite numerous petitions to the Tamil Nadu Athletic Association and the Tamil Nadu State Development Authority, where DMK scion Udhayanidhi is chairperson, there has been no response. He questioned whether it is fair to prioritize elite, luxury events like the car race while basic amenities for common sports are lacking.

Sathyan elaborated on the Formula 4 race, emphasizing that it is not just an expensive sport but one that requires significant financial investment. He noted that the racing sport typically targets participants aged 15 to 22. Sathyan questioned whether it is feasible for someone in India to obtain a racing license at 15, as licenses are generally issued by organizations like America’s SCCA, which may not be accessible here. He pointed out that while countries like Germany and firms such as ROKiT British F4 issue licenses to younger drivers, there is no similar procedure in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, he highlighted the exorbitant costs associated with the sport ranging from $180,000 to $250,000 (approximately ₹1.5 crore to ₹3 crore)—which restricts participation to those with substantial financial resources. Even the prize money for winning is relatively modest compared to the costs, amounting to $25,000 (several lakhs in Indian currency). Sathyan criticized the DMK for focusing on such an elite event while common sports like volleyball and kabaddi lack basic infrastructure.

In his third point, Sathyan questioned the Tamil Nadu government’s involvement in the event, pointing out that it was organized by a private entity investing ₹200 crore. He accused the DMK of pursuing business motives rather than serving public interests, labeling them as both corrupt and commercially driven.

Sathyan further criticized the event’s organizing company, Racing Promotions Private Limited, which started in Chennai in 2018. He likened the company’s operations to the IPL in cricket, where wealthy Bollywood stars and former cricketers own franchises. Examples include the Hyderabad Black Birds owned by Naga Chaitanya, Goa Aces owned by John Abraham, Speed Demons Delhi franchise owned by Arjun Kapoor, and Kolkata Royal Tigers owned by Sourav Ganguly.

Sathyan questioned whether Udhayanidhi Stalin might also pursue a franchise, either personally or through his family, given the parallels to IPL-style franchise ownership. He asserted that the DMK’s involvement in this racing event is a strategic move by Udhayanidhi Stalin to enter the race car franchise business, potentially funded by taxpayers’ money.

“Attempt To Cover Up Adulteration”: Milk Agents’ Association Demands Action Amidst Allegations Of Adulteration In Aavin Milk

"Attempt To Cover Up Adulteration": Milk Agents' Association Demands Action Amidst Allegations Of Adulteration In Aavin Milk

The controversies surrounding Aavin seem to be unending. Right from discontinuing green cover milk to cut costs to charging more for lesser fat content milk to finding worms in the milk to employing minors at Aavin factories to safety issues in Aavin plants where a woman met with an accident and died to regularly increasing the prices of Aavin products, there seems to be no end to the issues at Aavin.

This time around, there is yet another controversy related to adulteration.

Ponnusamy, president of the Aavin Milk Agents’ Welfare Association, has raised serious concerns about the integrity of milk management, following recent events in Madurai district. He warns that efforts to cover up adulteration in bulk milk cooling centers could destabilize the management of the Aaivn milk supply chain.

According to Ponnusamy, the Madurai district procured 4,000 liters of milk daily from the Usilampatti area, which was then transported to the Koppampatti cooling center. However, during the transportation of this milk to Madurai, it was reportedly mixed with water, leading to adulteration.

On 13 March 2024, the Dairy Development and Extension Officer conducted an investigation that uncovered this malpractice. In response, the Koppampatti Bulk Milk Cooling Station was temporarily shut down, and the permit for the contract vehicle involved was revoked. However, no action was taken against the officials responsible for the adulteration. Instead, the officer who exposed the irregularity was transferred to Usilampatti. Despite the initial closure, the Koppampatti cooling center has been permitted to resume operations, further fueling controversy.

A video released by the officer who uncovered the malpractice has since gone viral, sparking widespread concern. Ponnusamy highlighted that similar malpractices are occurring across the state, with milk bulk chilling centers controlled by brokers engaging in adulteration without consequence.

Despite complaints being lodged with the DMK Milk Minister Mano Thangaraj and the Managing Director of Aavin, as well as reports being submitted to the Vigilance Division, no substantial action has been taken to address the issue.

Aavin Milk Agents’ Welfare Association president Ponnusamy urged the government to take immediate and appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the milk supply chain and prevent further destabilization of milk management.

“Are You Unaware Of Tamil Nadu’s Drug Problem Affecting School Children?” Madras HC Questions TN Police On Drug Abundance In TN

Madras High Court criticised Chennai police

The Madras High Court has raised critical concerns about the police’s awareness and handling of drug issues in Tamil Nadu and the adequacy of basic facilities provided to relocated slum dwellers. These concerns are part of a case initially filed in 2017 by the Women’s Rights Movement. It challenged the eviction of slum dwellers in Chennai and the conditions of their new accommodations.

In 2018, the High Court appointed an advocate commissioner to assess the basic facilities at four relocation sites, including Perumbakkam and Thuraipakkam. After inspecting these areas, the advocate commissioner’s report, which was submitted to the court, highlighted that narcotics, including ganja, were freely available.

During a recent hearing, Chief Justice Krishnakumar and Justice Balaji examined the advocate commissioner’s findings. Chief Justice Krishnakumar noted that the report indicated narcotics were being distributed freely in the areas in question, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of current enforcement measures. Justice Balaji emphasized the need to understand why no action had been taken on the recommendation to establish a drug rehabilitation center. The justices’ comments highlighted their concern over the apparent lack of progress in addressing drug-related issues in the region.

The judges also questioned the police counsel about the extent of drug problems across Tamil Nadu. Are the police not aware of the extent of the drug issue in Tamil Nadu? This problem is affecting school children as well, they said. They further inquired if a separate body was designated to handle drug cases or if such cases could be transferred to an independent entity for a more thorough investigation.

In response, the police counsel assured the court that drug trafficking had been brought under control and highlighted a decrease in crime rates. The counsel also noted the deployment of many police officers in the affected areas and stated a detailed report on the actions taken based on the advocate commissioner’s recommendations would be submitted.

The court directed the Tamil Nadu government to review and respond to the advocate commissioner’s recommendations. They also instructed the District Legal Works Commission and the Taluka Legal Works Commission to personally inspect and report on providing basic facilities at the relocation sites. The case has been adjourned to 9 September 2024 for further proceedings.
