Hindu Tamilar Katchi founder Rama Ravikumar has come down heavily on the TVK government’s decision to challenge the High Court order permitting the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam at Thirupparankundram Hill.
Ravikumar questioned the government’s approach, asking why it had approached the court against the very order that directed the authorities to facilitate the lighting of the Deepam.
“If implementing the court order permitting the lighting of the Deepam is your responsibility, whose responsibility was it to appeal against the order?” Ravikumar asked, questioning the rationale behind the government’s legal challenge.
He further questioned why the government was pursuing a legal battle to prevent the lighting of the Deepam when the High Court had already issued directions on the matter.
The remarks come amid the continuing legal dispute over the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam at the Deepam pillar on Thirupparankundram Hill. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had earlier directed that the Deepam be lit at the hilltop pillar, with the police directed to provide security. The Tamil Nadu government subsequently challenged the order before the Supreme Court.
Ravikumar, who is the petitioner in the Deepam case, has questioned the government’s position and its decision to continue the legal challenge rather than implement the High Court’s directions.
He also sought to know why the government was pursuing a“legal battle” to prevent the lighting of the Deepam despite the judicial direction permitting it.
