Suresh Gopi Is All Set To Become Kerala’s First BJP MP

The saffron party has breached the red fort in Kerala as BJP MP candidate and actor Suresh Gopi is set to win the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat.

He is leading with a margin of over 74,000 votes.

Suresh became an official member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in October 2016. He ran as a BJP candidate from the Thrissur constituency in Kerala for the 2019 Indian general election. He finished third in the election behind the Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Rajaji Mathew Thomas, who came in second, and lost to T.N. Prathapan of the Indian National Congress (INC). He was able to secure 293,822 votes, more than twice as many as the BJP candidate got in the last election.

He submitted a nomination in 2021 to run for a seat in the Kerala Legislative Assembly in the upcoming election. He claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited him to run in the election for the legislature. As a BJP candidate, he ran in the Thrissur Assembly constituency. Nevertheless, he was defeated by P. Balachandran of the CPI, finishing third overall with 40,457 votes, behind INC candidate Padmaja Venugopal. He was declared the BJP’s contender from the Thrissur seat for the Kerala Lok Sabha elections in March 2024.

Alleged Comedian John Oliver Becomes A Glorified Dhruv Rathee To Hit At PM Modi

In the latest episode ofLast Week Tonight, alleged comedian John Oliver took aim at India’s recent election, using his platform to launch a scathing critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This move, however, reeks of a hit job rather than anything, making Oliver look and sound like a glorified Dhruv Rathee, who has been posting video after video making baseless allegations and spreading lies against the Modi government.

Oliver’s segment tried to paint a bleak picture of India’s democratic exercise, the largest in the world, involving over a billion voters. He focused on allegations of voter suppression and electoral irregularities by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that Modi is poised to win a third term through dubious means – much like what the Congress and other leftists and their supporters have been claiming.

“Over the course of Modi’s rise, he’s chosen to be strategically quiet about his pseudo-authoritarian, pro-Hindu vision of India, Oliver claimed. He accused Modi of using anti-Muslim rhetoric during the campaign, pointing to a speech where Modi, as alleged by Oliver, falsely claimed his rival party would redistribute wealth toMuslims“, whom he referred to asinfiltrators. We all know the truth of those words – Congress scion Rahul Gandhi launched a campaign to talk about wealth distribution, doing an economic survey, and whatnot. Modi was talking about illegal immigrants when he mentioned infiltrators, it is the likes of Rathee and Congress twisted his statement, and Oliver followed suit without cross-checking.

Oliver went further, accusing Modi ofunderminingdemocratic institutions, stifling political opposition, and restricting press freedom. He mocked Modi’s infrastructure and food distribution (free ration) programmes, comparing the distribution of grain in bags with Modi’s face to Lyndon Johnson rebranding food stamps asLyndon’s Lucky Yum-Yum Voucher.”

While the world is seeing and is jealous of India’s economic growth despite the pandemic, Oliver dismissed these claims, citingsuspect statistics and highlighting the widening inequality“. He pointed out that 1 million people now control about 80% of India’s wealth and criticized the country’s drop in the Global Hunger Index, ranking it behind North Korea and Sudan. This is exactly the same propaganda that Dhruv Rathee has also been peddling.

Oliver portrayed thesuppressionof political opposition as a deliberate strategy, mentioning the freezing of opposition party bank accounts and the arrest of opposition leaders just before the election. He suggested that charges against opposition politicians often vanish when they switch to the BJP, implying a corrupt manipulation of justice. Once again, he speaks like a Dhruv Rathee.

Particularly inflammatory was Oliver’s focus on the rise in anti-Muslim sentiment and violence under Modi’s leadership. He described instances of police brutality against Muslims and highlighted a chilling incident where an officer allegedly praised Modi after killing three Muslims on a train. It’s worth remembering: that is not a bug of Modi’s leadership, it is a feature,Oliver stated, while not making an attempt to understand the truth about India and the propaganda peddled by the West.

Oliver’s segment criticized the international community’suncritical, fawning praiseof Modi, urging a more balanced view. It should be possible to acknowledge the good things that Modi has managed to do for India, while also acknowledging that many Indians live in active fear of what he seems more than happy to represent, he concluded.

This episode has sparked significant controversy in India, where it is conspicuously absent from JioCinema, the show’s official streaming partner, and unavailable on YouTube. This omission has fueled speculation that the sensitive content led to its exclusion, although there is no confirmation.

Previously, a 2019 episode focusing on Modi and former US President Donald Trump’s visit to India was also removed from Disney+ Hotstar, drawing criticism for censorship. At the time, India’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry denied any involvement.

Oliver’s relentless criticism and one-sided portrayal of Modi’s leadership place him in the same category as Dhruv Rathee, who is notorious for his anti-Modi stance. Oliver’s approach, blending humor with harsh critiques, appears more as a targeted attack rather than a balanced examination of Modi’s tenure.

In conclusion, John Oliver’s latest episode is yet another Western propaganda that has made him look nothing less than a glorified Dhruv Rathee who parrots lines given to him by his paymasters. This so-called comedy show was more a deliberate hit job on Narendra Modi, reflecting a biased perspective that fails to look at the truth.

Hindu Munnani Seeks Ban On Illegal Prayer House Near Vinayaka Temple In Marungoor Panchayat For Trying To Convert Hindus

The Hindu Munnani has lodged a formal complaint with the Thittacheri police station in Nagapattinam district, calling for a ban on the prayer house functioning illegally opposite the Vinayaka temple in Marungoor panchayat of Thirumarugal block. The complaint highlights concerns over purported religious conversions in the area.

In a petition addressed to the Sub-Inspector of Thittacheri, the Hindu Munnani detailed their grievances. “In Thirumarugal block, Marungoor main road, opposite the ‘Selva Ganapathi’ Vinayagar temple, there is an ‘Arpudha Bestha Jebalayam’ which is functioning against the law. This prayer group is brainwashing poor Hindus with the intent of converting them to Christianity. They are also targeting patients in the government hospital under the guise of missionary work and pressuring them to convert. This illegal activity should be stopped, and action should be taken against them,” the petition states.

The Hindu Munnani alleges that the activities of the synagogue, which they claim operates under the name “Arpudha Bestha Jebalayam,” are not only unlawful but also harmful to the social fabric of the local community. They argue that the group’s methods involve exploiting vulnerable individuals, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and coercing them into changing their faith.

Recently, missionaries were caught openly carrying Bibles in their shoulder bags and targeting the downtrodden and hopeless for conversion to Christianity in broad daylight at the government hospital (GH) in Kumbakonam. A BJP functionary swiftly intervened and thwarted the proselytization attempt.

ECI Refuses To Grant Extra Time To Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh For Response Over His Claim On Union HM Amit Shah

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had contacted 150 District Magistrates of an equal number of Parliamentary constituencies to influence the counting process of the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. Election Commission of India issued a notice to Jairam Ramesh asking him to furnish the details/disclose the names of the DMs. In response, Jairam Ramesh requested that he be given a week’s time to gather the details.

The request from Jairam Ramesh, spokesperson for the Congress, for a week’s time to respond to a letter from the Election Commission of India (ECI) has been denied. The ECI has instructed the Congress leader to provide a response by 7 PM on 3 June 2024 concerning his previous assertions.

A communication sent by ECI dated on 3 June 2024, requested a response by 7:00 PM on the same day. The letter stated, “Dear Sir, 1 am directed to refer to your letter dated 03.06.2024 in response to the Commission’s letter of even number dated 02.06.2024 whereby you have sought an extension of one week to file a detailed reply. Your allegation that attempts have been made to influence the District Magistrates of around 150 Parliamentary Constituencies, who are also the ROs/DEOs, has serious connotation and direct bearing on the sanctity of the counting process, scheduled for tomorrow.”

The letter added, “As mentioned in Commissions letter dated 02.06.2024, no DM has reported any such undue influence as alleged by you. Therefore, the Commission hereby outrightly rejects your request for time extension and directs you to file your response along with the factual matrix/basis of your allegation by 19.00 hours today i.e. 03.06.2024, failing which it would be presumed that you have nothing eubstantive to say in the matter and the Commission would proceed ahead to take appropriate action.”

The Commission highlighted the seriousness of such allegations, emphasizing the need to address them in the public interest. Although no district magistrates reported undue influence, the Commission sought clarification from Ramesh regarding the alleged calls made by Amit Shah to 150 district magistrates. Ramesh had accused the BJP of intimidation tactics, urging officials not to succumb to pressure and uphold the Constitution. As the exit poll results suggested BJP’s return to power with Narendra Modi potentially securing a historic third consecutive term, Ramesh criticized the alleged intimidation tactics and expressed confidence in the victory of the INDIA Janbandhan coalition. He reaffirmed the importance of upholding democratic principles and resisting pressure, stating that officials are being closely observed.

Jairam Ramesh the Congress general secretary of communications via his official X handle claimed, “The outgoing Home Minister has been calling up DMs/Collectors. So far he has spoken to 150 of them. This is blatant and brazen intimidation, showing how desperate the BJP is. Let it be very clear: the will of the people shall prevail, and on June 4th, Mr. Modi, Mr. Shah, and the BJP will exit, and the INDIA Janbandhan will be victorious. Officers should not get under any pressure and must uphold the Constitution. They are under watch.”

In this backdrop today (3 June 2024) during the press briefing the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has strongly responded to allegations made by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claiming Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s alleged calls to 150 district magistrates after the conclusion of Lok Sabha elections voting.

Kumar emphasized the importance of not spreading rumors and casting doubt on everyone, questioning whether it was feasible for someone to influence all district magistrates. He asserted that if such influence had occurred, the responsible party would face consequences. CEC Rajiv Kumar questioned, “Can someone influence them (DMs/ROs) all? Tell us who did this. We will punish the person who did it…It is not right that you spread a rumour and doubt everyone.”

Additionally, Kumar acknowledged the concerns raised by multi-party delegations ahead of the vote counting, assuring that their demands, including CCTV camera monitoring of control unit movements, would be addressed. Kumar said, “All issues raised by multi-party delegations have been addressed. They demanded that there should be CCTV camera monitoring of the movements of the control units. That will be done,

Kerala Congress Goes Bonkers On Social Media Especially After Exit Poll Numbers

The social media handle of Kerala Congress on platform X seems to be going on a rambling overdrive on the platform making irrelevant comments and posts assuming they are “intelligent” comebacks.

Bullying CEOs

The most recent one was when the X handle of Kerala Congress questioned travel aggregator Ease My Trip over the “resumption” of booking to the Maldives.

The post said, “Couple of months ago online travel aggregator @EaseMyTrip made a nationalistic move by removing Maldives as a destination from their flight and hotel booking platform to support Modi. Now they have quietly resumed booking to Maldives. We are wondering what happened. Is it a sign of something? Is money more important than Modi? Money will come and go, so is Modi!”

In response to Kerala Congress’s post, EaseMyTrip’s CEO Nishant Pitti replied, “Dear @INCIndia, thank you for your concern. @EaseMyTrip has halted Maldives bookings from January 8th until today. Some bookings did occur between May 16th – 26th, but we took immediate action and got them removed. Why focus only on us? Are you not aware of other Chinese-owned travel portals that never stopped promoting Maldives in the first place? We’ve been serving for the last 16 years without any foreign investments. Yes, you’re right, nothing is permanent—the money will come and go. But our nationalistic approach will never change. By the way, we are here for the long haul, and it’s not easy for us to go. Hope you understand

Following this response from Pitti, the Kerala Congress handle further continued trolling the CEO. They wrote, “Thanks @nishantpitti for the clarification. It’s reassuring to know that it was a technical glitch and was not testing waters. Given your mention of China, why do you still allow bookings to China? Hope you know they seized 4,067 km² of our territory and our 20 soldiers made ultimate sacrifice. To protest and demonstrate your nationalistic stance, will you remove Chinese cities from your service at the earliest? Take it from us, that will make headlines more than Maldives and boost the image of your brand even more among nationalist Indians. Over to you.”

This was also debunked by fact-checking handles that, “As per http://DGCA.gov.in data, there is no passenger movement from China to India & India to China directly.  Instead of introspecting Exit Poll results, Congress is busy in attacking EaseMyTrip’s Founder Nishant Pitti with wrong facts.”

Nitpicking News Channels

With all exit polls going against the Congress, this specific handle went overboard to nitpick Zee News for publishing “wrong numbers“. In reality, the channel had telecast one exit poll in collaboration with Matrize which gave the NDA 353-367 seats while an AI-based poll telecast a couple of days later gave the NDA 305-315 seats. The handle displayed its ignorance quite blatantly – either they were too naive to not realise it was 2 different polls or had some issues with reading and comprehension. They wrote, “Markets correct over time. Its the first time the world is seeing exits polls correcting over time. BJP lost 50 seats in just two days!”

Meltdown Over PM Modi’s “Handwriting”

Another post was made over PM Modi’s “handwriting” and the use of two pens (with different inks) for writing and signing. The post read, “One doubt. Why will one write with a blue pen and sign with a black pen? Ran out of ink? Btw, the writer has good handwriting.”

It is understood that PM Modi is not well-versed in English and that most often such notes are written by his PA or other designated staff in the PMO under which he places his signature.

Talks About Rashmika’s Post Rather Than Focusing On Kerala’s Condition

Back in May 2024, film star Rashmika Mandanna was in the news for praising the Modi government. In response to her video on Atal Setu, Kerala Congress handle posted, “Dear Rashmika Mandanna Ji, The nation has seen paid ads and surrogate ads before. This is the first time we are seeing an ED-directed ad. It came out well. Good job! We noticed that the Atal Setu appears practically empty from your ad. Being from Kerala, we initially thought that Mumbai has such low traffic, so we checked with our friends in @INCMumbai. They informed us that the Rajiv Gandhi Bandra-Worli Sea Link has much higher traffic and shared a video for reference. Take a look at this video.”

They further shared some “data” and claimed that people were not using the bridge owing to its high toll charges of ₹250.

Veteran RSS leader Ratan Sharda produced facts to counter Kerala Congress’ claims. He wrote, “Since #Congress has decided to present facts, here are a few – Bandra Worli sea link tender floated by @nitin_gadkari was around 440 cr. After Congi came to power, new tender was approved 1600 cr & project handed to Pawar Kaka friend HCC of Lavasa fame with 23% “cost overrun” And don’t compare intracity traffic where there are hardly any choice, with intercity traffic. You should be ashamed that #Congress sat over Atal Setu project from 1963! Congress never paid any attention to Mumbai except for political funding

Netizens also mercilessly trolled the handle over the post.

It seems as if the Congress is going to go bonkers when the results are announced on 4 June 2024 and the signs of that are already very visible. It will be torture for netizens to withstand their reactions going forward.

Prolonged Power Outage Across TN Contrary To Dravidian Model Govt’s Claim Of ‘Power Cut-Free’ State; Enraged Public Protests, Locks EB Offices

On 31 May 2023, the Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, issued a self-congratulatory statement declaring Tamil Nadu as a “state free from power cuts”. This proclamation, however, seemed to awaken a dormant issue that had previously been overlooked. Following the statement, the media spotlight shifted towards the power cut issues, amplified by the online community’s reactions and trolls. The aftermath of the press release saw numerous reports of prolonged power outages, particularly during nighttime, in many peripheral areas of Chennai. Instances of low voltage were also widely reported.

As temperatures soared in Chennai, the city’s power demand and usage reached unprecedented levels of 4,769 MW and 101.755 million units respectively on recent days, surpassing the previous figures of 4,648 MW and 100.04 million units. This is not a first instance for the city, even last year fate was the same.

TANGEDCO’s X handle received numerous complaints from across the city. Some residents reported difficulties in reaching TANGEDCO’s centralized customer service ‘Minnagam.’ K Krishnaveni from Medavakkam expressed her frustration, stating that there was no response to calls during the night. She emphasized the hardship faced by the elderly and children in her household due to nighttime power cuts and urged TANGEDCO to ensure a consistent power supply during the summer.

M Krishnan, a 42-year-old resident of Vignarajapuram, told TNIE that power outages at night have become a common occurrence. He reported that their area had no power from 11 PM to 1 AM for two consecutive days. Power outages were also reported in other parts of the city, including Velachery, T Nagar, and Mylapore.

A press release on 1st June stated that TANGEDCO successfully managed Chennai’s high demand of 4,769 MW without any issues and there was no discrepancy between power demand and supply. However, due to the extreme heat, repairs were being carried out on transformers, underground cables, and power lines, leading to power cuts in some areas. The utility has directed officials to take measures to ensure a continuous power supply.

Meanwhile, netizens criticized the DMK government’s claim that Tamil Nadu was a power-surplus state in the social media highlighting issues of power cuts and low voltages. They made a mockery out of it.

Complaining of frequent power cuts and erratic supply over the past few days, residents of the Ambattur, Avadi, Ennore, Manali localities in Chennai resorted to protests at midnight. They laid siege to TANGEDCO offices at several places in the city. For the past 15 days, residents have been facing prolonged outages at night and power cuts thrice in the daytime, in Ambattur and surrounding areas like Korattur, Kallikuppam, Madhanankuppam, Gandhi Nagar, and Thirumalai Priya Nagar.

The erratic power supply, characterised by sudden disruptions both during the day and night, has left residents grappling with the sweltering heat. Further, high voltage supply in certain places posed risk to electric equipment.

Irked by this, a large number of residents had gathered at the TANGEDCO offices in Ayapakkam and Avadi. They had a heated exchange of words with the staff members and demanded immediate restoration of power and uninterrupted supply.

https://twitter.com/kumudamnews/status/1796757620797129144

Similarly, residents of Nehru Nagar, Ennore, resorted to protest on Katthivakkam High Road demanding uninterrupted power supply, affecting traffic flow. They dispersed following assurance from the officials concerned. Residents were seen gathered at night at the TANGEDCO offices in Guduvanchery and a few places in the southern areas of Chennai.

Residents in the Ayanavaram area have been expressing their frustration over persistent power outage issues for the past month and a half. Despite attempts to address the problem, such as repairing the electrical pillar, the power supply remains unreliable. One resident mentioned that the power is restored for only about half an hour before cutting out again. Another resident questioned how long they would have to endure this inconvenience, especially when power cuts disrupt their mornings and nights, affecting their ability to sleep and work the next day. Adding to the dissatisfaction, residents have complained about the lack of responsiveness from the electricity board (EB), citing instances of electricians arriving intoxicated and encountering water shortages due to power cuts.

During the May 2024, the regions like MayiladuthuraiThanjavur, and Coimbatore faced the brunt, particularly during nighttime. The delta districts were hit hard by these outages, jeopardizing the irrigation needed for crops, potentially leading to crop failure. Residents of Saidapet took to the streets to protest against the recurring power cuts, blocking the National Highway in frustration

Former Kalakshetra Prof Sheejith Krishna Granted Bail In Sexual Assault Case

On 3 June 2024, the Madras High Court granted conditional bail to Sheejith Krishna, a 51-year-old former professor at Chennai’s Kalakshetra Foundation, who was accused of sexual assault by two former students. Krishna was arrested by the Neelankarai All Women Police on 22 April 2024, following complaints from the students, who studied at the institution between 1995 and 2007, alleging multiple instances of sexual harassment.

The case against Krishna emerged after one of the women approached the Madras High Court in December 2023. The court subsequently directed the police to investigate her complaint. This directive led to a preliminary inquiry by the Neelankarai All Women’s Police Station and the subsequent registration of a case against Krishna in February.

During the bail hearing, Senior Counsel R John Sathyan, representing Krishna, argued that the alleged offenses occurred over two decades (28 years) ago and questioned the credibility of the accusations given the significant time lapse. Sathyan emphasized the lack of substantial evidence, that since the time of arrest, Krishna had not been investigated by the police nor had any othervictimcome forward to provide evidence. It was also noted that the complainant now resides abroad.

Opposing the bail petition, the counsel for the complainant contended that granting bail to Krishna would deter other victims from coming forward. The police also argued that another victim had filed a complaint against Krishna and that a few more were likely to file complaints and hence bail must be denied to him. On 22 May 2024, when the case came up for hearing, it was reported that the Madras High Court questioned the purpose of keeping Bharatanatyam dancer and former Kalakshetra faculty member Sheejith Krishna in custody in relation to the case. Justice C Saravanan of the vacation bench reviewed Krishna’s bail plea. The government advocate argued that the ongoing investigation necessitated Krishna’s detention, as police are in the process of recording witness statements under Section 164 of the CrPC. The judge suggested that Krishna could report daily to the police station instead. The government advocate, noting that additional witness statements still need to be collected, requested more time for further instructions.

On 3 June 2024, the court decided to grant conditional bail to Krishna. If Krishna has to travel abroad, he is required to get permission from the court before the travel.

This decision allows Krishna to be released while awaiting further legal proceedings.

The Kalakshetra Foundation, a premier performing arts institution, had already been in the spotlight due to protests by students alleging sexual harassment by four teachers. Hari Padman, an assistant professor at the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts on the Kalakshetra campus, was the first to face accusations from several students. Padman was arrested by Chennai police in April last year and was granted bail in June 2023 by default due to failure of police to file chargesheet. The National Commission for Women (NCW) which had taken cognizance of the case found no evidence to support the allegations.

The institution set up an independent enquiry committee led by retired Justice K Kannan, along with former Tamil Nadu police chief Letika Saran and medical professional Shobha Varthaman which suspended Hari Padman and dismissed three other instructors, Sanjith Lal, Sreenath, and Sai Krishnan. This committee recommended providing legal assistance to students who wished to file police complaints against Sanjith Lal, Sai Krishnan, and Sreenath.
