"Pottu Mama": DMK Makes Anti-Hindu Jibe At Vijay's Aragaja Tilak

A protest by a group of DMK women supporters associated with the party’s so-called “GenZ DMK” has drawn attention after protesters repeatedly used the term “Pottu Mama” to mock Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Joseph Vijay, apparently referring to the dark-coloured Aragaja tilak he has recently been seen wearing on his forehead.

The protest was held under the leadership of Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan and featured several women functionaries and supporters of the DMK attacking Vijay and his government over alleged attacks on women and social-media trolling. However, the repeated use of “Pottu Mama” became one of the most conspicuous elements of the protest, turning a Hindu religious mark worn by the Chief Minister into a political insult.

Vijay has recently appeared in public wearing an Aragaja tilak along with his now-familiar formal coat-and-suit attire. According to TVK functionaries, the tilak is traditionally prepared using aromatic substances including punugu, javvadhu, pachai karpooram and vetiver roots. It is commonly associated with temple rituals and abhishekam offerings in Hindu traditions.

The phrase was heard multiple times during the protest, including during chants accusing the Vijay government of failing on law and order and women’s safety. Protesters also repeatedly referred to “Pottu Mama’s rule” while demanding action against those allegedly posting objectionable content about women associated with the DMK.

The protest was ostensibly organised over alleged obscene social-media content targeting DMK women and Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan. Speakers accused the Vijay government of selectively taking action against political opponents and demanded that the administration first ensure that its own supporters respected women.

At several points, however, the rhetoric shifted towards personal attacks on Vijay. One speaker mocked the Chief Minister for allegedly requiring a “cheat sheet” while signing his name and questioned what his security personnel were protecting.

The protesters also challenged Vijay to arrest them, declaring that they were not afraid of police action and that the DMK leadership would stand behind them. They repeatedly invoked Periyar and described themselves as the “grandchildren of Periyar”.

The protest was also framed as a wider political confrontation between the DMK and the TVK. Speakers said the DMK women would continue using social media to question the government and accused the ruling establishment of attempting to intimidate critics through arrests.

However, the repeated reference to Vijay’s tilak raises a separate question: why has a traditional Hindu religious symbol become a term of ridicule in a political protest led by DMK supporters?

The Aragaja tilak is not merely a fashion accessory. It is traditionally associated with Hindu temple practices and is used by devotees in connection with religious rituals. Vijay’s decision to wear it has itself generated discussion because of his emergence as a major political figure in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK protesters’ repeated use of “Pottu Mama” therefore appears to turn a visible Hindu religious symbol into a political taunt against the Chief Minister.
