A heated exchange broke out in the Tamil Nadu Assembly between Electricity Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar and Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin during the debate on the demands for grants for the Electricity Department, with both sides trading personal remarks.
The confrontation began during the discussion on the demands for grants relating to the Justice, Prisons, Law, Energy and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments departments.
Speaking during the debate, former DMK minister V Senthil Balaji alleged that the Electricity Department was not being properly administered under the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government.
Responding to the allegations, Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar said he would explain the difficulties faced by the Electricity Board over the previous five years. While referring to Senthil Balaji, the minister initially called him the “Karur company owner” before correcting himself and referring to him as former minister Senthil Balaji.

The exchange escalated when Nirmal Kumar hit back, saying, “We would need only five minutes to say that the Leader of the Opposition spent three hours in the bathroom. Everyone knows how to speak. If unnecessary words are used, we too know how to respond.”
Udhayanidhi Stalin then responded, “I would like to ask whether you have appointed a minister to monitor who in Tamil Nadu sits in the bathroom and for how long.”
The remark drew strong objections from the DMK benches.
Rising to respond, Udhayanidhi Stalin referred to Nirmal Kumar as “Honourable Sanghi Minister” before immediately correcting himself and saying, “Sorry, sorry, I apologise”.

The remarks triggered loud protests from DMK MLAs, leading to further disruption in the House.
TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna intervened in the exchange and said, “Let the Opposition ask what I am going to speak about. If we also get up and behave like them, the Assembly will not function.”
Udhayanidhi subsequently said that Senthil Balaji had raised questions during the demands-for-grants debate based on figures and alleged that the minister had been the first to use objectionable language. He sought the removal of the remarks from the Assembly records, as reported in Tamil ABPLive.
The Speaker responded that the remarks had already been removed from the records while the minister was speaking.
Nirmal Kumar subsequently returned to the substance of the electricity debate and accused the previous DMK government of administrative failures in the Electricity Department.
He said that four ministers had handled the department during the DMK government and alleged that there had been confusion over recruitment during different periods.
The minister further claimed that while around 15,000 employees had retired, only 343 people had been recruited, and alleged that no corresponding administrative restructuring had been carried out.
