Madras High Court Criticizes Tamil Nadu Government’s Handling of Fake NCC Camp Sexual Harassment Case; Questions Thoroughness of Investigation

Madras High Court Criticizes Tamil Nadu Government's Handling of Fake NCC Camp Sexual Harassment Case; Questions Thoroughness of Investigation

The Madras High Court expressed frustration with the Tamil Nadu government’s failure to uncover the motive behind the sexual harassment of girl students at a fake NCC camp in Krishnagiri, as well as the background of the accused individuals.

During a hearing of a PIL filed by advocate AP Suryaprakasam, which sought a CBI investigation into the case, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice D. Krishnakumar and Justice P.B. Balaji questioned whether the investigation is proceeding as the State claims.

After speaking with students and parents, the Krishnagiri district legal services authority submitted a report, as directed by the Court. Upon reviewing the report, the bench was alarmed to find that some victims and their families wished to remove their children from the school due to the incident. According to the report, one of the sexual assault victims has requested to relocate far from the district and seeks support for her future.

The court questioned the State on why investigators had not uncovered the background of the accused, Sivaraman, or the methods he used to organize the fake NCC camp at various schools and identify any other individuals involved. The investigation officer reported that they had arrested an accused named Karunakaran and questioned another suspect, Bhuvan, who was believed to be a key figure in orchestrating the fake camp. Karunakaran, 32, a former member of Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), had destroyed a computer hard disk and other crucial evidence after Sivaraman’s arrest. He was taken into custody last week.

Reviewing the report, the bench noted that Sivaraman had brandished two pistols during the camp and threatened the boys to prevent them from speaking about the incident. The bench directed the investigation team to explore these issues further.

Additionally, the bench requested clarification on the cause of Sivaraman’s death, as his father has expressed concerns. Advocate General (AG) P.S. Raman indicated that an additional report would be provided at the next hearing. Petitioner Suryaparakasam also requested that the Court direct the provision of ex gratia payments to the victims.

Additional Advocate General (AAG) J. Ravindran reported that interim compensation had already been given to the victims and assured that final compensation would be distributed as soon as possible. After reviewing all the submissions, the bench emphasized the need for careful handling of the investigation due to its significance and scheduled the next hearing for 19 September 2024.

Gunfight Starts In Jammu & Kashmir’s Kishtwar District Ahead Of Polls

Six Killed, Four Injured In J&K Terrorist Attack

A gunfight started on Friday between the security forces and terrorists in Chattru village of J&K’s Kishtwar district.

“A joint team of security forces including the army and J&K police started a CASO (Cordon & Search Operation) in Chattru village. As the joint team of security forces came closer to the hiding terrorists, they fired triggering an encounter. Further details are awaited,” an official said.

Eight Assembly segments in the Chenab valley region, including Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, and 16 seats in the south Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam, will go to polls in the first phase on September 18.

Jammu, Kathua, and Samba districts will vote in the second and third phases of J&K elections on September 25 and October 1.

Hilly districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Reasi and Udhampur in the Jammu division have witnessed terrorist ambush attacks against the army, security forces and civilians during the last two months.

After reports that a group of hardcore foreign terrorists, believed to be 40 to 50 in number, are responsible for these attacks, the army deployed over 4,000 trained soldiers drawn from the elite Para commandos and those trained in mountain warfare inside the densely forested areas of those districts.

Terrorists used the element of surprise to carry out ambush attacks and then disappear into the forests of these hilly areas.

The deployment of the army and the CRPF together with the strengthening of the village defence committees (VDCs) managed by local residents, has deprived the terrorists of using the element of surprise to carry out such attacks.

After the security forces started aggressively going after the terrorists both in the Jammu division and the Kashmir Valley, the terrorists are now increasingly being engaged in exchange of firing with the security forces.

“They either get killed during such encounters are remain on the run. This prevents them from surprising the security forces by carrying out sly attacks”, a senior police officer said.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Statue Collapse: Court Extends Judicial Custody Of Accused Sculptor, Consultant

Chhatrapati Shivaji Statue Collapse: Court Extends Judicial Custody Of Accused Sculptor, Consultant

A court in Malavan on Friday extended the judicial custody of the two prime accused—sculptor Jaydeep Apte and structural consultant Chetan Patil—until September 24 in the case pertaining to the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Rajkot Fort on August 26.

Advocate Ganesh Sovani, who represents the sculptor, said the police presented Apte and Patil amid tight security in the court after their police custody ended on Friday.

The 40-foot-tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, constructed by Apte, crashed on August 26, ostensibly due to bad weather. This sparked national outrage that culminated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s apology.

Both Apte and Patil went absconding after the collapse.

While Patil was arrested in Kolhapur on August 30, Apte surrendered before Thane Police late on September 4, and was brought to Malvan town in Sindhudurg to face the law.

Hours after the collapse on August 26, the Malvan Police lodged a case in the matter, invoking Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita Sections 109, 110, 125, 318 and 3(5) on attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, conspiracy, cheating, etc.

Advocate Sovani, who has termed the charges ridiculous, illogical, wrong, and without application of mind, told IANS that he plans to challenge these stringent sections, as the police have alleged no injuries to anybody, including tourists.

Meanwhile, Patil is contemplating moving a bail application in the matter, though his lawyer was unavailable for comment.

The 28-foot-tall statue, mounted on a 12-foot-high pedestal in the seaside fort, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4, 2023, coinciding with Navy Day celebrations.

Unfortunately, the stature tumbled in barely eight months, leading to shock, sadness, anger and disappointment among the people, and blame games in the political arena.

AIIMS Bhopal Use Chest Wall Reconstruction Technique To Treat Child Suffering From Rib Cancer

AIIMS Bhopal use chest wall reconstruction technique to treat child suffering from rib cancer

A team of doctors at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Bhopal performed a complex and life-saving surgery on an eight-year-old child suffering from rib cancer.

Initially, the doctors applied chemotherapy to kill growing cells. However, the child’s condition was worsening, and the cancer in the ribs continued to spread. Notably, chemotherapy is most often used to treat cancer since cancer cells grow and multiply much more quickly than other cells in the body.

Seeing the child’s condition worsening, the medical team decided to proceed with the complex surgery. The surgery was performed. However, the next challenge for the medical team was to fill the gap in the ribs.

The medical team developed a new chest wall using a novel chest wall reconstruction technique. “This unique procedure, which is being applied to pediatric chest wall reconstruction for the first time, has been recognised and published in the country’s most prestigious journal.”

Association of Pediatric Surgeons Dr Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, said that the child, who had been on a ventilator before surgery due to the severity of the condition, was successfully taken off ventilator support just 12 hours post-surgery. The child was discharged from the hospital six days later.

The complex surgery was conducted successfully, and the child returned happily to his home, as several multidisciplinary teams from different departments of AIIMS Bhopal worked hours to make it happen.

The Pediatric Surgery Department performed the tumour excision, and the Plastic Surgery Department used the child’s tissue to reconstruct the chest wall. Similarly, the Anesthesia Department was critical in ensuring the child’s safety throughout the operation.

Dr. Ajai Singh praised the team’s efforts, emphasising that this achievement showcases AIIMS Bhopal’s commitment to innovative surgical solutions and highlights the hospital’s expertise in handling complex pediatric cases.

“This surgery is a testament to our doctors’ dedication to pushing the boundaries of medical innovation. We are proud of this breakthrough and its impact on pediatric surgery worldwide,” Dr. Singh said.

Port Blair To Be Renamed As Sri Vijaya Puram : Amit Shah

Port Blair To Be Renamed As Sri Vijaya Puram : Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday that the name of Port Blair will be changed to Sri Vijaya Puram. In a post on X, Amit Shah said, “Inspired by the vision of PM Narendra Modi Ji to free the nation from colonial imprints, today we have decided to rename Port Blair as ‘Sri Vijaya Puram’. “While the earlier name had a colonial legacy, Sri Vijaya Puram symbolises the victory achieved in our freedom struggle and the A&N Islands’ unique role in the same. Andaman & Nicobar Islands have an unparalleled place in our freedom struggle and history. The island territory that once served as the naval base of the Chola Empire is today poised to be the critical base for our strategic and development aspirations.”

He added, “It is also the place that hosted the first unfurling of our Tiranga by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Ji and also the cellular jail in which Veer Savarkar Ji and other freedom fighters struggled for an Independent nation. Now Sri Vijaya Puram will be the capital city of the Union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.”

Port Blair, which is the largest town in Andaman district, was named after Archibald Blair, a naval surveyor and lieutenant in the British East India Company. The Government of Bengal established a penal colony on Chatham Island in 1789 and named it after Blair. Port Blair’s seafront Cellular Jail, completed in 1906, hints at its past as a British penal colony and is now a memorial to Indian Independence activists. Inland, the Samudrika Marine Museum showcases local marine life, while the Anthropological Museum focuses on the islands’ indigenous tribes.

Last year on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had changed the names of 21 islands of Andaman and Nicobar. Stating that Netaji’s sacrifices are being commemorated in the 21st century, the Prime Minister announced the renaming of the 21 islands after Paramvir Chakra awardees.

Be Ready To Hear Our Viewpoint On Your Country, EAM Jaishankar Warns Foreign Diplomats

Be Ready To Hear Our Viewpoint On Your Country, EAM Jaishankar Warns Foreign Diplomats Interfering In Indian politics

Reacting strongly to the recent comments by some foreign diplomats posted in India, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar said on Friday that the envoys and their leaders should also be prepared to hear India’s viewpoint about their country and the current political scene there.

I have no problems if people comment about our politics. But then, I think, in fairness, they should also be ready to hear my comments about their politics. So, how to get a more mutually respectful world, more equal.. Because everybody says that we are equal but they don’t actually behave like that. It is a bit like Animal Farm – some are more equal than others,” the EAM said at an interaction with the Indian community in Geneva.

Jaishankar, on the last leg of his three-nation tour, was replying to a question on foreign diplomats in New Delhi often expressing their viewpoint about Indian politics.

Countries often practice abroad what they are sensitive to at home. So, whenever people do any such thing, they must also think about what would happen, if this happened in their own home. It is something that they should think about,” added EAM Jaishankar.

During the event organised by India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, the EAM also highlighted achievements and big initiatives of the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the last ten years.

Our high-speed road corridors in the last ten years have increased eight times with 28 kms of highways being added every day. From six metros in 2014, we have now 21. The port handling has doubled in this period and we are now building around seven to eight new airports yearly. The infrastructure that has held us in the past is now changing,” said Jaishankar.

The EAM then went on to give the audience some more numbers, giving an indication of the progress being made back home.

From 387 Medical colleges ten years ago, we have 706 now. The All India Medical Institutes have actually tripled from seven to 22. The higher secondary schools have grown with 60 per cent and school enrollments have more girls than boys. Whatever was the baseline of 2014 has actually doubled in the last 10 years. We have today the confidence and experience to do much better,” he added.

The minister mentioned that poverty remains a “big challenge” even though 250 million people have escaped poverty since 2014. He also mentioned setting up 12 industrial zones across the country, which would attract global manufacturing.

In many cases, we are correcting historical shortcomings. Look at the Western coast of India. There are virtually no deep water ports along the entire Western coastline. Considering that so much of our shipping goes out to the Gulf and the Western world, it is something which is a prime need and yet was not addressed for so long. Now, we have plans to develop the whole port network,” the EAM stated.

All of this, he remarked, requires hard work and doesn’t happen in a day.

There is a big debate in our country about manufacturing. There are people who ask why we are importing so much from China? Part of it is because we neglected manufacturing through the 1960s, 80s, 90s and even in the first decade of 2000. When did we have governments which actually made a major push on manufacturing?

Yet, people come today and say that we need to find a fix as if this is something that you can do instantaneously. Some even say that we are incapable and should not even attempt it. Ask yourself, can you actually be a major power without manufacturing? Major power needs technology and nobody can develop technology without manufacturing. So, you have to build human resources, infrastructure, and have those policies because life is not that khatakhat, it is hard work,” he added.

Hindu Munnani Warns Of Statewide Protests Over Arbitrary Demolition Of Historic Muneeshwaran Temple

Hindu Munnani Warns Of Statewide Protests Over Arbitrary Demolition Of Historic Muneeshwaran Temple

The Hindu Munnani has issued a warning of statewide protests against the arbitrary demolition of ancient temples in Tamil Nadu. This condemnation follows the recent destruction of the centuries-old Muneeshwaran temple in Chinnamanur, Theni district, despite a prior agreement reached during peace talks between the community and local officials, promising that the temple would be preserved.

Three months ago, the municipal administration decided to demolish the Muneeshwaran temple, which is located near the farmers’ market in Chinnamanur town.

Following this decision, the Hindu Munnani organized discussions with officials, including Municipal Commissioner Gopinath and Bodi DSP Periaswamy. During these talks, a commitment was made that the temple would not be demolished.

However, despite this assurance and the Hindu Munnani’s declaration of victory during the Vinayagar Chaturthi public meeting, the municipal chairman of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam compelled the local administration and police to demolish the 50-year-old temple early on the morning of 13 September 2024 (at 5 AM).

To protest against such arbitrary atrocity against the Hindu temples, the Hindu Munnani have warned that they will conduct a state-level protest.

Ford To Make A Comeback In India To Boost Exports, Hire Up To 3,000 More

Ford to make a comeback in India to boost exports, hire up to 3,000 more

US automaker Ford Motor announced on Friday that it will restart its manufacturing plant in Chennai to boost exports and hire another 2,500-3,000 employees.

According to Kay Hart, President of Ford International Markets Group, the step aims to “underscore our ongoing commitment to India as we intend to leverage the manufacturing expertise available in Tamil Nadu to serve new global markets.”

In a LinkedIn post, she said the company has submitted a letter of intent (LOI) to the “government of Tamil Nadu in India, outlining Ford’s intention to utilise our Chennai plant for manufacturing for export.”

The decision follows multiple meetings with the Tamil Nadu government.

“We appreciate their ongoing support as we have explored different options for the plant. I know people will be curious, but we will have more to share about the type of manufacturing and which export markets we’ll be focusing on, along with other details, in due course,” Hart mentioned.

Ford Motor ceased operations in India in 2021 due to low sales and financial losses in the highly competitive domestic automotive market.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin posted on X, a social media platform, that he had a very engaging discussion with the Ford Motor team.

“Explored the feasibility of renewing Ford’s three-decade partnership with Tamil Nadu, to again make in Tamil Nadu for the world,” he said. The Chief Minister also visited the headquarters of Google, Apple, and Microsoft and entered into MoUs with these tech giants for investments in Tamil Nadu.

According to Hart, the decision will add to Ford’s growing employee base in Chennai.

“Our global Ford Business Solutions team based there is already more than 12,000-strong and we are planning to increase that by another 2,500 to 3,000 team members in the next few years,” said Hart.

Ford also has an engine manufacturing team based in Sanand, Gujarat. India is the US automaker’s second-largest employee base worldwide.

TN Bishops' Council Which Tried To Influence Voters On Communal Lines For LS 2024 'Condemns' Guv RN Ravi For Speech Against Missionaries

The Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) and Tamil Nadu Latin Bishops’ Council (TNLBC) have issued astrong condemnationagainst Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi for spreading what they claim to befalse propagandaduring a recent event. On Saturday, 7 September 2024, while addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of the Education Group in Chennai’s Mylapore, Governor Ravi delivered a speech highlighting the rise of a new Bharat and promoting the importance of Sanskrit education. However, his comments regarding the role of British missionaries seem to have affected the Christian community led by the TN Bishop Council. They alleged that his comments weredestroying India’s identity and educational system.

The Governor’s statement, accusing the British government and Christian missionaries of trying to destroy India’s identity and diminish the spirit of Bharat, has been described by the Bishops’ Council as historically inaccurate and deeplyoffensive‘. In response to the speech, the TN Bishop Council said, The Governor’s remarks are a gross distortion of history, suggesting that Christians were allied with the British in efforts to undermine India. This is an absolute falsehood.”

They alleged that Governor Ravi’s statements on Christian missionaries having stolen our wealth and artistic treasures and created a false identity for the people of our country, distorted history and made it wrong, also did not go down well with the Council. Further, they alleged that Governor Ravi speaking the truth about the missionaries as a well-planned conspiracy to spread false propaganda is seen by them as adivisive rhetoric aimed at the Christian community“.

Reverend George Anthonysamy, Archbishop of Mylapore and President of the Tamil Nadu Synod, expressed outrage, calling the Governor’s remarksprofanityand stating that Ravi’s actions are sowing division in society. He added, Governor Ravi’s speech was not only hateful but a clear attempt to incite communal tensions.”

The Archbishop further emphasized that Christians in India have long been deeply connected to the country’s traditions, values, and culture, and are committed to its development. He called for the Governor to stop promoting a politics of hatred and urged Ravi to focus on uniting people and fulfilling his constitutional duties.

Archbishop Accused Of Influencing Voters On Communal Lines During LS Polls 2024

It is noteworthy to remember that Archbishop George Anthonysamy himself came under fire for attempting to sway voters on communal lines during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. A formal complaint was filed against the Archbishop after he penned an editorial in The New Leader magazine, which is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore.

In his editorial, titled “General Election 2024: Statement from Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council,” the Archbishop allegedly invoked religious sentiments and criticized India’s central government, calling for Christians to vote against what he described as a “mono-cultural nation.” He further accused the Union Government of undermining India’s diversity, imposing communal laws such as the Uniform Civil Code, and curtailing the rights of Christians and Muslims.

The editorial raised alarm among various political and legal bodies, with some alleging that the Bishop’s statements amount to an attempt to polarize voters along religious lines. The Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF) filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India, accusing Archbishop Anthonysamy of violating election laws and misusing his religious authority to influence electoral outcomes.

Further allegations suggested that the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore and its associated organizations may be involved in illegal financial activities, including misuse of foreign funds under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Several organizations, including the Estate of Sir John De Monte and the Chennai Mylai Educational Society, are under scrutiny for allegedly receiving foreign donations meant for charitable purposes but using them to engage in political activities.

Following the complaint to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the ECI instructed the Chennai District Election Officer to address the issue of influencing voters along communal lines.

SEBI Chairperson, Husband Deny Involvement In Mahindra, ICICI Bank

Rahul Gandhi Is A Hypocrite Of The First Order

SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, along with her husband, Dhaval Buch, on Friday refuted recent allegations made against her by the Congress party citing Hindenburg Research, saying she has never dealt with any file involving Agora Advisory, Agora Partners, the Mahindra Group, Pidilite, Dr Reddy’s, Alvarez and Marsal, Sembcorp, Visu Leasing or ICICI Bank at any stage after joining the markets regulator.

The statement, issued personally, said the allegations are “completely false, malicious and defamatory”.

“All the allegations made are false, incorrect, malicious and motivated. The allegations themselves are based on our Income Tax Returns. In other words, all these matters are a part of our income tax returns, which have been fully disclosed, and taxes have been duly paid,” the couple said.

They claimed that their income tax returns had been obtained illegally through fraudulent means.

“This is a clear breach of not only our right to privacy (which is a fundamental right) but also a violation of the Income Tax Act. The facts, transparently reflected in our Income Tax Returns, have been twisted deliberately to create a false narrative,” the statement read.

The statement also clarified that ICICI Bank payments to Agora were interest payments on deposits and that the “ascribing motive to it is unfortunate and defamatory.”

This came after the Congress claimed the SEBI chief had a 99 per cent stake in a firm that provided consultancy services to the Mahindra and Mahindra Group. Her husband received Rs 4.78 crore as income from the conglomerate while she was adjudicating cases of the same group.

Mahindra Group had denied the claims, stating that the charges levelled by the Congress were “false and misleading in nature”. Earlier, allegations made by US short-seller Hindenburg Research claimed Buch was involved in a conflict of interest regarding SEBI’s investigation into the Adani Group, a charge which the SEBI Chairperson and her husband have already denied. The couple said they are confident they could ‘demolish’ the charges even in the future.
