RG Kar Tragedy: Junior Doctors Seek Intervention Of President To Ensure Justice, Meet Demands

TMC Goes The Dravidian Model Way As Kolkata Police Intimidate Netizens

Junior doctors throughout West Bengal, united under the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF), on Friday, have sought the intervention of President Droupadi Murmu, who had spoken out strongly over the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital last month, in resolving the continuing impasse over their unfulfilled demands.

“The gruesome nature of the crime, the alleged attempts to cover it up, and the attendant atmosphere of fear woke the nation up to demand an impartial investigative process and a speedy, fair and rational trial,” they said in an email to the President, a copy of which is available with IANS.

The email has also been sent to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda.

The junior doctors have given certain examples of alleged evidence tampering in the case and deep-rooted corruption that has become rampant in West Bengal’s medical and medical education system.

The email read, “In view of these circumstances, the sense of deep mistrust and fear that we feel towards the authorities remain unalloyed so far, and we desperately implore that these noxious elements within the health system be weeded out to assure us a truly safe working” place.

The junior doctors have also highlighted the inadequate infrastructure facilities and security arrangements at the medical colleges in the state, such as the lack of police personnel for regular patrolling within the hospital premises, inadequate lighting in relevant areas, inadequate and malfunctioning locks and seals, and the absence of any proper grievance redressal mechanism.

They also contended that women at such workplaces are particularly vulnerable, with instances like the lack of changing rooms and resting places, washrooms dedicated for female doctors and even the absence of Internal Complaints Committees.

Their appeal read, “Your intervention in these trying times will act as a beacon of light to us all, showing us the way ahead out of the darkness that surrounds us. ”

President Droupadi Murmu spoke out about the Kolkata incident last month.

In an article under her name titled ‘Women’s Safety: Enough is Enough’ with the subheading ‘The recent spate of crimes against women should force honest self-introspection to uncover the roots of the malaise’, the President revealed her outrage, and observed that such incidents tarnish the country’s enviable record of women’s empowerment, “of which she considers herself an example”.

President Murmu observed that training in self-defence and martial arts is essential for all, particularly girls, “but that’s not a guarantee for their security as women’s vulnerability is influenced by many factors”.

Obviously, the full answer to that question can come only from our society. For that to happen, what is needed first of all is honest, unbiased self-introspection. The time has come when we as a society need to ask ourselves some difficult questions. Where have we erred? And what can we do to remove the errors? Without finding out the answer to that question, the half of our population cannot live as freely as the other half,” she maintained.

The President particularly called out the mindset that objectifies women but noted that it was not limited to India only. She also highlighted the collective amnesia that grips society once the initial shock of a heinous crime loses its impact.

Kunnakudi Temple Elephant Subbulakshmi Dies After Fire Accident, BJP Blames DMK And Temple Admin For Negligence

Kunnakudi Temple Elephant Subbulakshmi Dies After Fire Accident, BJP Blames DMK And Temple Admin For Negligence

Subbulakshmi, an elephant who had been a cherished resident of the Kunnakudi Shanmughanathar temple in Karaikudi for over 30 years, tragically passed away due to injuries sustained in a fire.

The Elephant Mandapam, situated near the temple’s stairway, had a palm leaf roof covering its tin sheet-covered structure, which shielded the elephant from the sun. On the night of 12 September 2024, a fire broke out in this makeshift shed due to an electrical malfunction.

In an attempt to escape the blaze, Subbulakshmi managed to exit the hall on her own. The staff and visitors noticed the injured elephant and promptly alerted the temple administration. Police, forest officials, and veterinarians across Tamil Nadu arrived to provide urgent care. Despite their best efforts, Subbulakshmi succumbed to her injuries. Kunnakudi Ponnambala Adigalar and the temple community paid their respects in the wake of her passing. The loss of the temple’s beloved elephant has deeply saddened devotees and residents.

In response to the tragic death of the elephant, the Tamil Nadu BJP State President for the Spiritual and Temple Development Wing, M Nachiappan, has condemned the incident, placing blame on the ruling DMK and the temple administrators. He argued that the DMK government’s neglect extends beyond temples, chariots, gosalas to include the welfare of temple elephants. He claimed the responsibility for this oversight rests with the HR&CE  and the Kunnakudi administration, accusing them of deceiving devotees. The Tamil Nadu BJP has expressed strong disapproval of the situation, questioning why there should be an HR&CE department for such anarchy.

Vladimir Putin Warns West Against Direct Involvement In Ukraine Conflict

Vladimir Putin Warns West Against Direct Involvement In Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that by providing Ukraine with long-range weapons, Western countries risk involving directly in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In such circumstances, Russia would be forced to make “appropriate decisions” based on the new threats, Putin was quoted by Russian media as saying. Ukraine has been pleading with its Western allies for it to use their missiles, including long-range ones, to fire deep into Russian territory, according to Western media reports.

“Only service people from NATO countries can make flight assignments to these missile systems. Ukrainian service people cannot do that,” Putin told Russian state TV. “So this is not a question of allowing the Ukrainian regime to attack Russia with these weapons or not. It is a question of deciding whether NATO countries are directly involved in a military conflict or not,” Xinhua news agency reported quoting local media. “If this decision is taken, it will mean nothing else than direct participation of NATO countries — the USA and European countries — in the war in Ukraine,” he said.

According to a report by Politico, the White House is finalising a plan to ease restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-donated weapons in battles against Russia, including the use of British long-range missiles that contain American parts to strike targets inside Russia.

The Rot In TN’s Education System: A Rejoinder To DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian’s TNIE Article Criticizing NEP

Rejoinder to Thamizhachi Thangapandian's TNIE Article Criticizing NEP

DMK MP Dr Thamizhachi Thangapandian had an article published in The New Indian Express in which she blames National Education Policy 2020 as propaganda.

She belongs to the cadre that printed the fake information in the Class 9 textbook, for which UNESCO awarded E.V.R. the Socrates of South Asia award (whatever that means!). Against which a PIL was filed in the Madras High Court. Thangapandian comes from a party where the Higher Education Minister has been convicted by court.

Now, let us go to the article itself. It starts with a quote by Martin Luther King. “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” But here is what NEP2020 says:

The education system aims to develop good human beings capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, scientific temper, and creative imagination, with sound ethical moorings and values. It aims to produce engaged, productive, and contributing citizens who will build an equitable, inclusive, and plural society as envisaged by our Constitution.

In contrast to the identical message conveyed through the above, students from Tamil Nadu schools and colleges are not permitted to think; instead they are asked to swallow and vomit the answers to score marks. A significant percentage of graduates are without jobs that match their degree certificates not because of the dearth of jobs but because they are unfit for those jobs despite their college years. This must make the state government ashamed to even speak about education, let alone find fault in a policy that has the nation’s interest at its core.

In the agenda-driven article, Thangapandian says, “One of the aims is to include Indian knowledge systems (IKS) in undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums. These range from Indian astronomy to textiles, town planning, and Vedic mathematics … … The IKS initiative allows a backdoor entry to pseudoscience, contradicting a fundamental duty enshrined in the Constitution—the development of scientific temper.”

Thangapandian has named astronomy, textiles, town planning, and Vedic mathematics and clearly none of them is a pseudo-science. She then states, “For instance, the higher education department of Madhya Pradesh recently notified a list of books for the IKS sections of libraries in government, government-aided and private institutions that include those authored by individuals with RSS connections.”

This is clearly a statement that shows her vengefulness for RSS. This method of criticism is unscientific and uncivil. Thangapandian does not criticize the content written by the individual(s), rather she assumes that their very association with RSS makes the content of their writing unacceptable. Seems like her propaganda bosses must have asked her to write such things.

She states, “IIT Mandi’s IKS department introduced a mandatory course … … which included topics like reincarnation, for engineering students. The irony of students with scientific backgrounds being taught unscientific theories seems to have escaped the institution.”

Unsurprisingly, yet again this statement is based on vague assumptions without knowledge of either what is in the book or of the subject in general. Being of a party that has built a memorial for their dead leader whom they garland along with statues of EVR and others, what is her stance on worshipping a statue/picture and, thereafter on reincarnation? A more scientific response that has statistical data to support is that we have top-quality professionals from IIT, AIIMS, IIM, and many other premiere institutions who consciously believe in reincarnation and worshipping ancestors; are counted among the greatest scientific brains in the country and the world.

Let me now list out the pathetic state which is not doing good for anyone in the state of Tamil Nadu except to fill the coffers of the corrupt and the wicked:

As of date, there is NOT ONE university of repute which is run by the state of Tamil Nadu. Every one of them is in shambles, grossly understaffed, and ridden with corruption. ‘Ghost Faculty Scam’ in several Universities in which thousands of positions were filled by mere tens of staff names was widely reported in recent months.

To fill full-time positions, state-run colleges appoint ‘Guest Lecturers’ who are made to teach full-time but who have neither job security nor decent pay. They earn as low as ₹25,000 a month, the lowest in the country. Despite a 2013 court order, the state has not made them permanent.

Statistics show that among graduates, Tamil Nadu’s unemployment rate is 16.3%, compared to the all-India rate of 13.4%.
Tamil Nadu has the unique distinction that it cannot even educate its children in their language.

Deccan Herald reported: ‘In 2022, around 47,000 out of the 900,000 students who took the Class X Board exams failed in Tamil. In 2023, nearly 50,000 Class XII students did not even turn up for the Tamil exam.’

These politicians dare to speak about language superiority in such a situation!

Many schools run privately by those who run the state government are affiliated with CBSE and not the State Board. The article published by The Print in June 2019 states, ‘More than 40 schools run by DMK politicians, and their family members are affiliated to the CBSE, which follows the 3-language formula.’ The likelihood that the number of these schools has increased over the past 5 years is high.

Last but not least, the Director of Loyola College, Rev. Fr. C. Joe Arun is on record where he states that the Class 1 to 5 social sciences syllabus has Jesuit ideologies “injected” into them. THIS IS UNDISGUISED IDEOLOGY in school textbooks!

The state government must first care for the State Board and state-run schools and colleges. You are not in the league of education that can criticize NEP or any policy to which you have no clue.

Unlike Thamizhachi Thangapandian, none of what I have stated is an assumption or my own imagination and I have provided references to corroborate each point that I have stated. If she wishes to pursue the debate, let her do some homework on NEP, IKS, the author of the books she speaks about, etc. and then we can talk. Until then, let her speak to Ponmudi and Anbil Mahesh and get them to do their job.

Centre Boosts Accountability For Food Grain Procurement, Distribution System

Centre Boosts Accountability For Food Grain Procurement, Distribution System

To enhance the efficiency and accountability of food grain procurement and distribution, the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) on Friday signed an MoU with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for the current fiscal.

The move reflects the government’s commitment to refine the public distribution system (PDS) and to ensure that food subsidy funds are managed with the highest level of efficiency by way of overall enhancement in the performance of FCI operations and its depots. The MoU outlines specific performance benchmarks (including performance benchmarking of FCI depots) and accountability measures, aimed at optimising the use of public funds in managing food security operations. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said that performance benchmarking of FCI depots contains depot efficiency parameters like capacity utilisation, operational losses, security measures, modernisation and automation of processes.

“It is appropriate that such large public expenditure is to be evaluated for their cost-effectiveness and value for money. This entails benchmarking of performance on critical operational parameters and establishing institutional accountability,” said the ministry.

Meanwhile, the food processing industries in the country have emerged as an important part of the country’s economy with an increasing contribution to GDP, employment and exports. The percentage share of processed food export in agri-food exports has gone up to 23.4 per cent in 2023-24 from 13.7 per cent in 2014-15, The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has approved 41 Mega Food Parks, 399 Cold Chain projects, 76 Agro-processing Clusters, 588 Food Processing Units under PMKSY scheme as on June 30 this year. During the last eight years ending 2022-23, the food processing sector has been growing at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of around 5.35 per cent.

Uproar At Tamil Nadu CM’s Cup: Weight Rule Reversed After Parents Protest

Uproar At Tamil Nadu CM’s Cup: Weight Rule Reversed After Parents Protest

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Cup, overseen by DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin’s sports department, faced backlash after a sudden 40 kg weight limit rule was imposed on participants in the new Silambam competition. Students, parents, and trainers protested fiercely, leading authorities to reverse the decision and allow all students to compete. The tournament, featuring 15 sports events, including Silambam, continues at Trichy’s Anna Stadium until October 11, 2024.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Cup

After protests from trainers, parents, and students regarding the sudden and arbitrary imposition of conditions for the Silambam competition, all students have now been allowed to participate.

This year’s Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Cup, overseen by DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin’s sports department, has faced criticism right from the start. The new conditions imposed on the sport shocked participants and were seen as poorly managed from the start.

This year, 15 district-level sports events, including chess, handball, boxing, volleyball, kabaddi, and badminton, were hosted as part of the Chief Minister’s Cup Sports Tournament held at Trichy’s Anna Stadium. A new Silambam competition was also introduced, attracting many students from across the country eager to showcase their skills with chilambu sticks.

However, participants were taken aback when a sudden 40 kg weight limit was imposed at the venue, despite no such condition being specified during online registration. Many children who had travelled long distances were heartbroken and began to cry upon learning they could not compete.

Parents Protest Over Sudden Weight Rule

Tensions escalated as parents and coaches clashed with umpires over the unexpected rule change. There were heated arguments over the exclusion of students based on their weight. Despite many students having registered for the Silambam competition, numerous participants were turned away when officials enforced the new weight restriction.

Frustrated coaches voiced their objections, but when referees dismissed their concerns, parents of the affected students gathered around the officials and staged a protest. Amidst the growing outcry, authorities eventually relented and permitted students weighing less than 40 kg to participate in the competition.

In addition to Silambam, the tournament includes Kabaddi, Carrom, Swimming, Bowling Ball, Athletics, Cricket, Badminton, Chess, Wheelchair Table Tennis, Volleyball, and handball. These events will take place at various locations until 11th October 2024.

Indian Researchers Build Low-Cost Solution To Enhance Engine Performance

Researchers at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous research and development centre of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have developed a low-cost solution called nanosecond laser surface texturing to enhance vehicle engine performance. This solution helps increase the lubrication of the moving parts within the engine, thus boosting engine performance.

Internal combustion (IC) engines represent the backbone of modern transport, but friction and wear between moving parts pose a big challenge to their performance. This causes enormous energy loss and, as a result, low fuel economy. The researchers said nanosecond laser surface texturing aims to address this problem.

This timely approach seeks to enhance tribological performance (lubrication of the moving parts within the engine) in gray cast iron applied to a diversity of critical engine components, which include piston rings and cylinder liners,” said the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Thermal and frictional dissipation consume a significant proportion of the energy supplied to IC engines. The frictional losses for IC engines are nearly 50 percent in the piston-cylinder system. Of these, 70-80 percent occur in the piston rings: the top compression ring, oil control ring, and second compression ring. The extent of these losses depends largely on tribology—the study of friction, wear, and lubrication of the moving parts within the engine, said the team.

Nanosecond lasers with a 100-nanosecond pulse duration and a wavelength of 527 nanometers can produce high-quality surface textures rather cost-effectively, making it a more practical solution for industrial applications. In tests conducted under different conditions, the laser-textured surface significantly improved in reducing friction and raising wear resistance. The results were not limited to the combustion engine. “Optimising laser-textured surfaces holds immense potential for improving component performance in general in various industries ranging from the automotive industry to manufacturing,” the team noted.

Kumaraswamy Visits K’taka Town, Blames Congress’ Inner Power Tussle For Violence In Mandya

Kumaraswamy Visits K’taka Town, Blames Congress' Inner Power Tussle For Violence In Mandya

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy visited the violence-hit areas of Nagamangala town in Mandya district on Friday where a Ganesh idol immersion procession was attacked and clashes occurred. The town witnessed violence and rioting during the Ganesh Visarjan procession on Wednesday night.

Kumaraswamy visited shops and showrooms that were gutted in fire and also spoke to the families of the arrested individuals. Speaking to reporters in Nagamangala after the visit, Kumaraswamy said that the violent incident might have been orchestrated to bring down Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He recalled that when the late Chief Minister Veerendra Patil was in office, Congress leaders had stage-managed communal violence in the cities of Ramanagara and Channapatna. “Now, it is being done in Nagamangala. However, some Congress leaders maintain that the CM’s chair is not vacant, while a few others have their eyes on the post and are waiting for an opportunity,” Kumaraswamy remarked.

Union Minister Kumaraswamy further said the Congress government is working towards appeasing one community in connection with the Nagamangala communal clash in Mandya. The person who installed the Ganesh idol has been made the primary accused. To cover up their failures, the authorities have made indiscriminate arrests.

Our state is a garden of all religions. Arresting innocent people in this incident is wrong. Congress leaders were the sponsors of the DJ Halli and KG Halli violence in Bengaluru, where rioters gutted the residence of a sitting Congress MLA and a police station. Those who were arrested for that violence are in a pathetic state today. Do we need a similar situation in Nagamangala as well?” Kumaraswamy questioned.

Home Minister Parameshwara has dubbed the incident as “accidental and minor”. “No one would believe he is the Home Minister after looking at the FIR. The failure of the police is glaringly visible. Due to this incident, the lives of common people are affected. The FIR mentions that people had gathered to murder police personnel. The government, which cannot ensure the security of its police, is ruling the state,” he criticized.

Where did the rioters get the courage to roam around with swords? How could they throw petrol bombs? Who allowed the Hindu crowd to dance in front of the mosque for 10 minutes? What were the police doing? If there had been an additional police force present, the situation could have been contained,” he slammed. He noted that there was no presence of the Additional SP or Police Inspector during the procession.

How does the Police Inspector who filed the complaint know the names? The FIR states that a huge crowd indulged in the clash. Yet, Home Minister Parameshwara says nothing had happened,” Kumaraswamy questioned Kumaraswamy also distributed compensation to both Hindus and Muslims ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh based on the extent of the damage, to the victims at the residence of former MLA Suresh Gowda. He also promised the parents and family members of the arrested individuals that he would work to get them released soon.

Kejriwal’s Bail Will Have No Impact On Haryana Polls : Congress Leader Pratap Singh Bajwa

Kejriwal Bail Will Have No Impact On Haryana Polls : Congress Leader Pratap Singh Bajwa

On Friday, Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will not impact the Haryana Assembly elections.

Bail and elections are two different things. It’s just a court procedure. The government took action, remanded him, and jailed him. Like any Indian citizen, he went to court, and the court granted him bail. This has nothing to do with the Haryana elections; it’s a separate issue. His bail will not significantly impact Haryana polls,” Bajwa said on Kejriwal.

The court has decided, and I find their observations very serious. I humbly request the court to be a little more proactive and timelier. Whether today’s Supreme Court observation will affect them or not, time will tell,” said the Congress leader.

If the court intervenes immediately and is proactive, the misuse of all their agencies will be stopped completely,” he added.

Supreme Court Gives Bail To Kejriwal

Earlier in the day, in a significant relief to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Supreme Court granted him bail in the corruption case linked to the alleged liquor policy scam. Apart from allowing Kejriwal’s bail plea, Justice Surya Kant, heading a two-judge bench, dismissed his distinct plea challenging the legality of arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the alleged liquor scam.

The other judge, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, authored a separate opinion raising tough questions on the timing of the CBI’s arrest and holding the central agency’s “belated arrest” to be unjustified.

Despite initial talks for a pre-poll alliance in Haryana, Congress and AAP have announced separate lists of candidates for the 90-member Assembly.

What Is The Liquor Scam?

The AAP government’s 2021-22 liquor policy, which privatized the liquor trade via public auction, is at the centre of a significant controversy. The CBI and ED allege this policy led to a Rs.2,873 crore loss for the Delhi government.

A private company purportedly paid Rs.30 lakh in bribes to secure a wholesale liquor license. It subsequently generated Rs.1,333 crore in sales within 13 months.

The company allegedly made Rs.192.8 crore in profit over eight months and gave Rs.100 crore kickbacks to AAP leaders.

Kejriwal Should Step Down As CM After SC Termed His Arrest Legal: BJP MP Manoj Tiwari

Kejriwal Should Step Down As CM After SC Termed His Arrest Legal: BJP MP Manoj Tiwari

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari demanded the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi Chief Minister after the Supreme Court described his arrest in the liquor policy scam case as legal and asked him to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh and two sureties on Friday.

Tiwari said Kejriwal has been in jail for about six months. “Now, the court has upheld his arrest as legal. In light of such stern observations by the court, he must quit the post on ethical grounds.

If he had little compassion for the pain and troubles of Delhi residents, he would have resigned long ago,” he added.

On August 5, the Delhi High Court also upheld his arrest as legal. Hearing Kejriwal’s petition against it, the High Court termed his arrest “legal” and said it was made only after sufficient evidence was collected.

In a video message, Tiwari listed the conditions set by the Apex Court for Kejriwal’s release and said the latter should resign from the post to improve the city’s governance.

He said the capital faces multiple woes, including waterlogging, clogged drains, and creaking infrastructure. Still, the Delhi CM worries only about his chair and refuses to budge. “The residents have been left to fend for themselves despite having an elected government. He should have some concern for the many troubles people face and should resign,” he said, highlighting that the top court has barred him from visiting the Secretariat or signing any files.

This renders him non-functional and would leave him incapacitated to work for the city,” he further explained.

Earlier in the day, the Court granted bail to Kejriwal but with certain conditions. It directed the Delhi CM not to visit the Delhi Secretariat nor sign any official file unless necessary. It also instructed the Delhi CM not to comment publicly about the merits of the liquor policy case under which he was incarcerated.
