Over 100 Boxes Of Explosives Seized From Tamil Nadu Vehicle Hidden Under Watermelons In Palakkad

Over 100 Boxes Of Explosives Seized From Tamil Nadu Vehicle Hidden Under Watermelons In Palakkad

Police in Kerala’s Palakkad district seized a pick-up van carrying more than 100 boxes of explosives, concealed beneath a load of watermelons, during a late-night interception on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, amid heightened security checks ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.

According to an officer from the Palakkad Town South Police Station, the vehicle was found transporting over 100 boxes of gelatin sticks along with more than 20 boxes of detonators. The explosive materials had been hidden under a consignment of watermelons in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

The seizure occurred as state authorities intensified security surveillance across Kerala in the run-up to the upcoming Assembly polls. Police acted on prior information indicating that a large quantity of explosives was being illegally transported into the state. During routine inspection, officers signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver allegedly failed to comply. Police then pursued the van, intercepted it, and took the driver into custody.

During preliminary interrogation, the driver informed investigators that the explosives had been loaded in Coimbatore and were being transported to a quarry site in Thrissur. Police stated that initial assessments suggested the consignment was intended for quarry operations.

Addressing the broader issue of explosive circulation in the region, police indicated that the sale of such materials was restricted to a limited number of licensed agencies. They noted that the trade often functioned as a monopoly in several areas, resulting in inflated prices, which in turn encouraged unlicensed operators to sell explosives clandestinely at cheaper rates.

Police said a case under the Explosive Substances Act would be registered against the driver following completion of seizure formalities. An official case has been registered by Palakkad Police in connection with the incident.

EPS Slams Attack On Hindu Makkal Katchi Leader Arjun Sampath

EPS Slams Attack On Hindu Makkal Katchi Leader Arjun Sampath

Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami condemned the alleged attack on Hindu Makkal Katchi president Arjun Sampath following a scuffle that broke out at the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court complex in Tiruchirappalli during his appearance in connection with the 2006 Periyar E.V. Ramasamy statue vandalism case.

Hindu Makkal Katchi president Arjun Sampath had appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Tiruchirappalli in relation to the case concerning the alleged vandalism of the Periyar E.V. Ramasamy statue at Srirangam.

The statue, located near the Rajagopuram entrance in Srirangam, was allegedly damaged in 2006, following which police registered a case against Arjun Sampath and several others. The matter is currently under trial before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Tiruchirappalli. Sampath and other accused persons were present for the hearing, after which the court adjourned the case to 4 February 2026.

After the proceedings, while Sampath was interacting with his supporters and lawyers within the court complex, some individuals were seen recording videos on their mobile phones. A section of lawyers present there objected, stating that videography and media interactions were not permitted inside the court campus. This led to an argument between the two sides, which escalated into a brief scuffle involving pushing and jostling.

Following the incident, Sampath submitted an oral complaint before the presiding judge, Nasir Ali, at the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. He sought security protection and requested action against the lawyers involved in the altercation. Police personnel subsequently provided security and escorted him safely out of the court premises.

Later, speaking to reporters, Sampath alleged that certain lawyers had surrounded him, raised slogans, and attempted to assault him. The situation caused a brief commotion within the court campus before normalcy was restored.

Taking to his X handle, leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami issued a statement expressing support for Sampath. He stated that reports indicated that individuals allegedly linked to Marxist-Leninist groups had attacked the Hindu Makkal Katchi leader when he visited the CJM Court in Tiruchirappalli for the case hearing. He condemned the incident, describing it as politically motivated, and urged the DMK government to take stringent action against those responsible.

Petition Filed Against Activists Who Exposed Turkman Gate Land Encroachment That Led To Mosque-Area Demolition

In what is being viewed as a retaliatory legal move, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court against Indic researchers and legal activists who were involved in efforts that led to the demolition of an alleged illegal encroachment near Turkman Gate earlier this year.

The petition names several activists including Preet Singh and Sanjeev Newar, along with organisations linked to their work, Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation and Rashtra Jyoti, as respondents. The plea has reportedly been filed by one Mohd Qamran, a resident of the Turkman Gate locality.

The litigation follows the January demolition drive carried out on Turkman Road/Ramlila Maidan, where authorities removed what was described in official action as a large-scale encroachment on public land allegedly linked to the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque committee. The demolition had come after sustained research, documentation, advocacy, and legal interventions by the named activists and their organisations.

According to the petition, the court’s intervention has been sought to regulate what it calls the “misuse and abuse of the process of law,” alleging that communal elements file frivolous writ petitions in High Courts in collusion with authorities to target religious sites for political ends and inflame tensions.

However, those named in the plea have strongly rejected the framing, maintaining that their work was rooted in lawful civic activism aimed at reclaiming public land from encroachment. They have asserted that the demolition was conducted through due legal process and administrative action, not vigilantism.

Responding to the petition, the activists said they were fully prepared for a legal battle and would contest the case on facts and law. They further stated that attempts to intimidate or silence advocacy on illegal land grabs would not deter their work.

DMK Govt Panel Recommends Sacred Wrist Thread Ban In Schools, But Education Min Seen Wearing Them

In 2023, the DMK set up a one-man commission in the aftermath of the disturbing Nanguneri incident in Tirunelveli district where two Scheduled Caste students were attacked by students from an intermediate caste.

Retired Madras High Court judge Justice K. Chandru submitted the report in June 2024 to CM Stalin and recommended “significant” changes to eliminate caste indicators in Tamil Nadu schools.

The recommendations included banning coloured sacred wrist threads, rings, and forehead marks – tilak that signify caste and removing caste-related names from schools. Point 8B states, “Students should be prohibited from wearing any coloured wristbands, rings, or forehead marks (Tilaka). They must also refrain from coming to school on bicycles painted with reference to their caste or exhibiting any caste-related sentiments. Failure to comply with these rules must result in appropriate action being taken, in addition to advising their parents or guardians.”

Cut to 2026. The DMK Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi is seen giving interviews at his home to various YouTube channels in the backdrop of the upcoming Assembly elections in TN.

In one such interview given to Galatta channel, he is seen eating food served by his wife. What catches a layman’s eye are the coloured (probably religious) threads on his wrist.

Screenshot of video from Galatta YT channel

These are the same threads that fall within the broader category of visible identifiers discussed in the Chandru Committee’s recommendations on caste markers in school spaces.

The contrast is difficult to ignore.

Here is a state-appointed panel recommending that students be discouraged and potentially prohibited from wearing coloured wrist threads, rings, and tilak in the interest of reducing caste signalling within educational institutions. Yet, the state’s own School Education Minister, who would ultimately be responsible for implementing or overseeing any such policy shifts, appears publicly wearing similar wrist threads without hesitation.

If sacred threads and similar identifiers are viewed as markers requiring regulation in school environments, questions naturally arise when senior policymakers themselves continue to display the same symbols in public life.

The Dravidian movement historically advocated the removal of caste identifiers including surnames as part of a broader social reform agenda. The measures targeting religious symbols risk conflating faith expression with caste assertion. Instead of erasing identity markers, educational interventions should focus on social awareness, anti-discrimination sensitisation, and accountability mechanisms within schools.

And it is the same party whose scion Udhayanidhi Stalin, also the Deputy CM of the state called for eradication of Sanatana Dharma. In a conference titled “Abolish Sanatanam Conference” in September 2023, he had said, “Mosquitoes, dengue, flu, malaria, corona – we should not oppose these things. They’ve to be eradicated completely. Same is the case with Santanam (Hinduism). Our first work should be to abolish/eradicate Sanatanam instead of opposing it. So, my appreciations to you all for giving an apt title to the meeting.”

As of now, the Chandru Committee report remains advisory in nature. The Tamil Nadu government has not issued any formal order implementing a ban on sacred threads, tilak, or related identifiers in schools.

Crumbling Classrooms, Insects In Food: Inside The Rot At Chennai’s CIT Campus

Crumbling Classrooms, Insects In Food: Inside The Rot At Chennai’s CIT Campus

Mounting complaints over crumbling infrastructure and poor hostel conditions at the Central Institute of Technology (CIT) campus in Taramani have drawn scrutiny, even as state authorities continue to invest in new skill-development infrastructure across the cluster of polytechnic institutions.

The issue gained wider attention after the recent triple murder of a migrant couple and their infant on the sprawling Old Mahabalipuram Road campus exposed broader safety concerns. However, accounts from students across four industrial training institutes, including Central Polytechnic College (CPC), one of the state’s top polytechnic institutions with nearly 100% placements, suggested that everyday campus life is marked by infrastructural neglect and welfare gaps.

Students Describe Dilapidated Academic Infrastructure

Students alleged that classrooms with cracked walls and damaged ceilings continue to be used, with some forced to sit on the floor due to a shortage of desks and chairs.

A CPC student was quoted saying in the Time of India report that they neither had benches nor desks in workshops and had to stand for long hours during practical sessions, leading to physical strain. Despite the government introducing new certification courses and roping in external agencies at significant cost to improve employability, students said their basic academic infrastructure remained neglected.

CPC Vice-Principal Gopu was reported as stating that students needed to adapt to demanding work conditions and that the Public Works Department had been informed to replace rough concrete flooring with smoother surfaces.

Hostel Conditions Raise Hygiene and Dignity Concerns

Hostel residents were reported as saying living conditions were significantly worse.

A student from the Institute of Printing Technology said food quality was consistently poor and that dead insects, including a frog in one instance, had been found in meals months earlier. Students also reported irregular drinking water supply and dry toilet taps.

Accounts also described students washing clothes in unsanitary, open spaces, raising concerns about hygiene and dignity.

New Infrastructure Underused, Old Buildings Still Occupied

Students alleged that newly opened buildings by the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) were not being fully utilised.

One IPT student said parents had been told during admissions that classes would be conducted in new facilities, but the buildings were later repurposed, including conversion into computer rooms, forcing students to continue studying in older structures.

Labs Lack Equipment, Machines Outdated

Students and staff flagged deficiencies in laboratory infrastructure.

A first-year CPC student said several computers were non-functional, electrical leaks affected machines, and basic chemistry lab tools such as pipettes, burettes, and burners were damaged or unusable.

A staff member stated that equipment did not meet industry standards, noting that CNC machines were more than a decade old and that technical staffing was inadequate. The absence of modern metal printing systems and supporting software was also highlighted.

Funding Constraints and Administrative Delays

Principals across institutes were reported as saying maintenance funding remained insufficient despite strong placement outcomes.

One principal said no dedicated annual maintenance grants were earmarked by DOTE and that upkeep expenses were largely met through student fees. Infrastructure proposals required DOTE clearance, with only ₹2 lakh to ₹4 lakh spent annually by each college on average.

While institute heads blamed the Public Works Department for inaction, PWD officials reportedly attributed delays to proposal rejections at the DOTE level. Sources added that focus had shifted to a ₹94-crore campus integration project, stalling renovation and new construction.

Higher Education Secretary P Shankar told Times of India that he was unaware of specific renovation allocations but stated that steps would be taken to address the issues.

High Cost Skill Projects Amid Basic Infrastructure Gaps

Officials were reported as stating that the government was constructing a ₹94-crore integrated learning centre for all institutions on the campus. In addition, a new Centre of Excellence was being established in collaboration with Tata at a cost of ₹45 crore to enhance student skill development.

However, students and observers said that while large investments were being made in advanced training ecosystems, foundational infrastructure including classrooms, hostels, sanitation, and food services remained in a state of neglect.

Some described the CPC college building as resembling an old, dilapidated structure from the 1960s, underscoring the contrast between placement success and campus living conditions.

Official Inspection and Response

DOTE Commissioner S. Visakan said he had recently inspected the campus and would initiate corrective measures covering buildings, hostels, and academic infrastructure.

He added that academic initiatives were being expanded through the introduction of German language courses and certification programmes in sectors such as footwear and food technology to improve industry readiness.

Call for State Intervention

Despite nearly 100% placement records across institutions, students said they continued to endure difficult academic and living environments.

They maintained that it was now incumbent upon the state government to address long-pending infrastructure, sanitation, and welfare issues and ensure that students received not just employability training but also a dignified learning environment.

‘Kasadara Karka…’: DMK Higher Education Min Govi Chezhian Makes A Mess Out Of Thirukkural

'Kasadara Karka...': DMK Higher Education Min Govi Chezhian Thirukkural Remix On Convocation Stage Goes Viral

DMK Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian’s address at a graduation ceremony of the College of Engineering, Guindy, under Anna University, has drawn attention after he appeared to mix up Thirukkural couplets while narrating an anecdote during his speech.

Speaking at the convocation event, the minister highlighted the historic legacy and prestige of the institution and congratulated graduating students, particularly first-generation graduates and women achievers. He also spoke about his own journey from a farming family to becoming a minister, stressing the role of Tamil Nadu’s social and educational reforms.

Speaking of Thirukkural, he said, “Everyone in the audience likes the Thirukkural; it is a universal scripture, and people will recite and quote their favorite verses according to their convenience.”

During the speech, Chezhian referred to an incident from a public function in the Kumbakonam region where he had gifted a portrait of Thiruvalluvar to a three-year-old girl and asked her to recite her favourite Thirukkural. He said, “When I attend public events, it is my custom to give gifts to students, and these gifts usually include a picture of Valluvar.”

He continued, “When I went to a simple event in the Kumbakonam area, I gave a gift of affection to a three-year-old girl. I asked her who it was, and she said, “Thiruvalluvar.” I asked her to recite her favorite Thirukkural couplet. Simple couplets are recited by ordinary people; favorite couplets are recited by those who cherish them. The words that the three-year-old child spoke were, “Igazhvaarai thaangum nilam pola thannai, iyalvaarai poruthal thalai”.

Instead of saying “அகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் நிலம்போலத் தம்மை இகழ்வார்ப் பொறுத்தல் தலை,” (Agazhvaarai thaangum nilapola thammai igazhvaara poruthhal thalai) meaning ‘to bear insults is best, like the earth which bears and maintains its diggers’, he said the above words as quoted.

When he repeated the kural, he seemed to say it correctly. He then continued reciting another popular kural. He said, “Karka kasadara karka, kattrappin nirka adharku thaga.”

The exact words for this kural are “கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின் நிற்க அதற்குத் தக.” This means ‘Learn thoroughly what is worth learning, without fault; Having learnt, let your conduct accord with that learning.’

He followed it by saying, “There is the pride that the Tamil race, 3000 years ago, created the Thirukkural, a book that elevated the importance of education in the world, with this couplet.”

The video clippings from the event have since gone viral across social media platforms, triggering sharp reactions from netizens. Many users questioned how the DMK, a party that has long projected itself as a principal stakeholder and guardian of the Tamil language and its classical heritage, could have senior leaders falter while quoting one of Tamil literature’s most revered texts.

The criticism was particularly pointed given that the error came from the Higher Education Minister himself. When those occupying key portfolios connected to education and language make such visible mistakes while citing the Thirukkural, it invites scrutiny and weakens the party’s long-held cultural positioning.

Traffic Paralysed, Homes Blocked: TVK Cadres Cause Nuisance Near Vijay’s Home-Cum-Party HQ

Residents living around the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party headquarters have voiced strong resentment over severe disruption allegedly caused by party functionaries who descended on the area for the distribution of election application forms.

According to multiple residents, the situation spiralled into chaos after TVK cadres erected barricades across surrounding streets, despite police officials reportedly making it clear that unauthorized individuals had no right to block public roads. Locals questioned how they were expected to enter or exit their own neighbourhoods when access points had been obstructed without prior notice or coordination.

The party had begun issuing “expression of interest” forms to prospective election aspirants, a process scheduled to continue until the 14th. However, the administrative exercise reportedly drew over 500 functionaries to a single stretch of road, overwhelming the residential locality from the early hours of the morning.

Residents alleged that vehicles belonging to TVK members were parked indiscriminately across lanes, effectively paralysing movement. Many said they were unable to take their cars out or even step outside their homes, describing the situation as “unmanageable” and “irresponsible.”

Tensions on the ground were visible when locals attempted to register their complaints with the media. Visuals showed heated verbal exchanges between residents and certain TVK functionaries, further aggravating the atmosphere.

People living in the area pointed out that the party office sits amid a dense residential cluster spanning nearly 13 streets and affecting over a hundred families. While barricading is occasionally carried out during major political events, residents said this instance was far more disruptive, with roadblocks placed across four to five streets due to the unusually large influx of cadres.

One resident said, “Look there, cars are parked all over. They eat and throw garbage everywhere and leave. They tell us “don’t go this side, don’t go that side.” If a car comes, they don’t allow it. On top of that, they pick fights. If we say anything, they refuse to move. They behave as if they are some big authority. If we complain, they say, “We don’t care, you do what you want,” and continue as they please.”

Regarding the haphazardly parked cars, another resident said, “From Sixth Avenue to Eleventh Avenue, everything is blocked. We even informed the police. They cut the call. Even if they come, they won’t do anything. You (media) go there, just cover those six avenues and see what’s happening. This is not for one or two days… we’ve been dealing with this for months. Only now residents have started coming out to speak because we can’t control this anymore. They haven’t even fully entered politics yet, but we are already facing so many problems in our residential area. You go and record, workers are not being allowed inside houses. Owners themselves have to plead with them to let domestic workers in. They’ve put barricades on every avenue. Who gave them permission for all this?”

Several residents reported being forced to park far from their homes and walk, some waiting 20–25 minutes at street corners before they could even access their houses.

Locals have now questioned the party’s civic responsibility, arguing that routine political activities were carried out with little regard for public convenience, turning a residential zone into what they described as a “political bottleneck.” Complaints have since been escalated to authorities seeking regulation of such gatherings in the future.

Dravidian Model Tamil Nadu: Former AIADMK Panchayat Vice President Beheaded Near Tea Stall After Confronting Drunk Men

Madurai: Former AIADMK Panchayat Vice President Beheaded Near Tea Stall After Confronting Drunk Men

Madurai district was shaken by a brutal murder after a former AIADMK panchayat vice president was allegedly beheaded by a gang following a confrontation near his tea stall.

The victim, Dhanasekar Pandian alias Senthil Kumar (33), son of Sakthi, was a resident of Samanatham near Thirupparankundram, close to a government higher secondary school in the area. He ran a tea stall on Nedungulam Road and had previously served as the vice president of the local panchayat representing the AIADMK. He is survived by his wife and two children.

According to reports, Senthil Kumar opened his tea stall as usual at around 6 AM on the day of the incident. At that time, more than three unidentified men were sitting in front of the shop consuming alcohol. The group was also reportedly involved in arguments with passersby in the area.

When Senthil Kumar questioned them and warned them not to sit and drink in front of his shop, a confrontation ensued. Police said the gang then attacked him with deadly weapons, fatally assaulting him and beheading him on the spot.

After committing the murder, the assailants fled the scene.

On receiving information, police rushed to the location and recovered Senthil Kumar’s body, which was lying in a pool of blood. The body was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered, and police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspects. Further inquiries are underway to determine the exact motive and sequence of events leading to the killing.

The incident has triggered shock in the region, with several political parties condemning the murder and raising concerns over law and order in the state.

30 Minor Girls Allegedly Sexually Abused By AP Govt School Teacher Zakir Basha Shaik; Complaint Filed With NHRC

30-Minor-Girls-Allegedly-Sexually-Abused-By-AP-Govt-School-Teacher-Zakir-Basha-Shaik-Complaint-Filed-With-NHRC

A formal complaint has been lodged with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking urgent intervention in an alleged case of sexual abuse involving minor girl students at a government school in Andhra Pradesh’s Annamayya district.

The complaint, submitted by the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF), pertains to allegations against a biology teacher, Zakir Basha Shaik, posted at the Zilla Parishad High School in Tarigonda village under Gurramkonda mandal. The petition alleges that multiple minor students were subjected to sexual harassment by the teacher.

According to the submission, testimonies of the victims were recorded on video and attached as evidence. The students reportedly accused the teacher of inappropriate physical contact and other acts of sexual misconduct. The complaint states that the testimonies indicate psychological distress among the children and call for immediate legal action.

The organisation also alleged procedural lapses on the part of school authorities. It stated that parents initially reported the matter to the school headmaster, but the incident was not immediately conveyed to the police as required under Section 19 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Instead, the issue was allegedly escalated internally within the education department.

The complaint further noted that failure to report child sexual offences attracts penal consequences under Section 21 of the POCSO Act.

Police in Gurramkonda have reportedly registered an FIR in connection with the case, while the accused teacher is said to be absconding.

Allegations of administrative negligence were extended to district education officials, with the petition claiming that the District Educational Officer did not promptly inform law enforcement or district authorities despite being aware of the allegations.

LRPF also flagged alleged intimidation of victims’ families, claiming that local political actors were exerting pressure to prevent formal complaints, thereby hindering the investigation.

In its plea, LRPF has urged the NHRC to take suo motu cognisance, ensure protection for the victims and their families, monitor the probe, initiate action against erring officials, and facilitate compensation, counselling, and rehabilitation for the affected minors.

TVK Policy Propaganda Secretary Arunraj Accused Of Harassing Civic Officials By Tiruchengode Municipal Chairperson

“Questioning Permits, Civic Works Without Post, If Harassment Continues, We’ll Go To Police”, Tiruchengode Municipal Chairperson Warns TVK Propaganda Secretary Arunraj

A warning has been issued against Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) policy propaganda secretary Arunraj by Tiruchengode Municipal Chairperson Nalini Suresh Babu, who alleged that he had been entering municipal wards and intimidating civic officials and sanitation workers.

Speaking at a municipal council meeting, the chairperson stated that if Arunraj continued such activities, a police complaint would be filed against him.

She said that elected ward councillors were already carrying out public works and addressing people’s grievances and questioned the need for a political functionary to independently enter wards and interact with officials.

Nalini alleged that Arunraj had been visiting multiple wards, questioning municipal authorities and speaking to officials despite holding no administrative authority. She further claimed that he had contacted her over the phone regarding certain civic issues and sought details, to which she directed him to obtain information formally through the municipality.

“Each ward has an elected representative who is doing the work for the people. He is entering wards with a political motive, gathering a few youngsters and raising questions like ‘this is not done, that is not done’,” she said during the meeting.

She also warned municipal officials and staff not to entertain or respond to such interventions and said that any instance of intimidation or interference should immediately be reported for legal action.

“Such a person, coming with political intent, has no right to question or speak to our officials or employees. If any harassment arises, we will address it through the police,” she said.

The chairperson added that Tiruchengode municipality had undertaken multiple civic improvements in recent years and had been upgraded in status and questioned the need for external political interference in council functions.

Echoing similar concerns, several councillors at the meeting alleged that Arunraj had been conducting inspections in wards and speaking in a threatening tone to civic staff.

Reiterating the council’s position, Nalini stated that regardless of any past position he may have held, Arunraj had no authority to question municipal officials, and that this view was being conveyed on behalf of the entire council.
