In a move that has stunned traditional Hindu devotees across Tamil Nadu and beyond, actor Dhanush has announced his next film Thamizh Murugan with Maoist glorifier Vetri Maaran as director. The project is based on a book by Arivumathi, a rabid anti-Hindu EV Ramasamy Naicker follower, and is someone who takes pride in his village driving out Brahmins from by throwing animal bones into their homes.
The film is being positioned not as a devotional epic on Lord Murugan based on the original authentic Hindu scriptures but a parochial Dravidian Model revisionist version.
The freshly unveiled first-look poster lays bare the film’s creative direction. Dhanush, playing the titular role is portrayed as a stern warrior atop an elephant, gripping a vel as he leads a vast army across a dust-choked battlefield but is deliberately stripped of every traditional Hindu marker. No vibhuti on the forehead, no kumkum tilak, no visible Hindu identity marks. Instead, the character is styled as a tribal chieftain, aligning with a Leftist-Dravidianist reinterpretation of Murugan as a Tamil tribal warlord rather than a deity within the Hindu pantheon.

Dhanush’s own caption seals the betrayal: “The Eternal Protector, warrior, THE KING & LEADER of the Thamizh people and lands. #sonofkottravai.” A man who begins his statements with “Om Nama Shivaya”, now puts a post about a movie on Lord Murugan with zero reference to Shiva, Parvati, or the divine Skanda of the Puranas.
His post and the movie poster peddles the usual Dravidianist pseudo-history: Murugan as a pre-Hindu Tamil tribal deity of the Kurinji hills with only “Dravidian ethnic identity,” no religious (Hindu) identity.
All Puranic, Vedic, and pan-Indian elements are contemptuously dismissed as “Sanskrit distortions” and Brahminical interpolations.
This is classic EVR (Periyar) ideology in action — the same hate-filled ideology that mocked Hindu gods, broke idols, and sought to uproot Sanatana Dharma from Tamil soil. Modern Dravidianists have simply repackaged the poison: from outright atheism to “secular Tamil pride” that hollows out Hinduism while claiming its icons.
Vetri Maaran, is an outright woke-left propagandist and an anti-Hindu EVR follower, who earlier implied that Rajaraja Chola was not a Hindu king. His last outing Viduthalai, a film that glorifies a Maoist, ended as a box office disaster. He’s also known for simping for the DMK which had called for the eradication of Sanatana Dharma.
The timing is no coincidence. It comes days after Jr NTR and Trivikram Srinivas announced a pan-Indian mythological project on the same deity. While one side presents the universal Hindu God of War, the Dhanush-Vetri Maaran effort counters with a narrowed, de-divinized, exclusively “Thamizh” mortal warrior stripped of his Shaivite parentage and cosmic role.
Lord Murugan has been worshipped as Thamizh Kadavul for millennia, but that Tamil devotion was never in opposition to his identity as the son of Shiva and Parvati. Sangam literature itself integrates him into the broader Hindu framework, and the six Arupadai Veedu temples stand as living testimony to his divine status across Tamil Nadu. Reducing him to a tribal chieftain from a sunken continent — visually and narratively stripped of Hindu markers — while erasing his celestial and pan-Indian dimensions is not scholarship. It is de-Hinduization dressed as history.
