Joseph Vijay’s TVK Is The New Christutva Alternative To DMK?

Is-Vijays-TVK-A-Christutva-Project

Actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is increasingly being projected as a political alternative to Tamil Nadu’s entrenched Dravidian majors – the DMK and the AIADMK. But beneath the carefully cultivated image of a “clean outsider” lies a dense web of allegations, historical parallels, institutional linkages, and political patterns that cannot be ignored.

Vijay’s political ascent does not exist in isolation. Instead, it fits into a broader ecosystem involving religious institutions, activist networks, foreign-funded NGOs, and political actors – an ecosystem that has shaped protest politics and regime destabilisation in Tamil Nadu for over a decade.

At the centre of this comparison is a striking parallel: Andhra Pradesh’s former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The Jagan–Vijay Parallel: A Familiar Political Template?

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s rise in Andhra Pradesh was accompanied by persistent allegations of corruption, evangelical backing, and policy indulgence towards Christian institutions in a predominantly Hindu state. His trademark political imagery – white shirt, khaki trousers, cultivated simplicity, became synonymous with his brand.

Vijay has been following a similar template.

Vijay’s public political attire mirrors Jagan’s almost exactly. More importantly, take a look at Vijay’s deep Christian family roots, particularly his uncles Xavier Alphonse and Xavier Britto, both of whom are closely associated with Catholic institutions and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) – an order with substantial influence in education, civil society, and politics.

This is not mere coincidence. Jagan’s trajectory, evangelical support, strategic secular messaging, and consolidation of power offers a blueprint now being adapted for Tamil Nadu.

The Loyola Syndicate And The Education-Politics Nexus

A recurring name in these allegations is Loyola College, Chennai, run by the Jesuits.

Vijay’s uncle Xavier Alphonse, a former principal of Loyola College, has faced multiple accusations over the years – from financial irregularities to misuse of institutional authority. Another uncle, Xavier Britto, a wealthy businessman and film producer, allegedly funded Vijay’s early film career through XB Film Creators.

This “Loyola syndicate”, a network of individuals linked to elite Jesuit institutions, provided financial support, influence, and political access that helped pave Vijay’s path from cinema to politics.

While these allegations may be contested, Loyola’s outsized role in Tamil Nadu’s civil society makes scrutiny unavoidable.

Beyond Vijay: A Pattern of Protest Politics in Tamil Nadu

Vijay’s emergence must be viewed against a longer chronology of Church-linked protest movements, often overlapping with DMK political interests.

Look at this timeline:

2012 – Kudankulam Nuclear Plant Protests
Christian fishermen mobilised; St. Lourdes Church, Idinthakarai became the protest hub. The Anglican Church publicly backed the agitation.

2016 – Jayalalithaa’s Death
With the “Iron Lady” gone, institutional resistance weakened.

2017 – Jallikattu Protests
Allegedly funded and organised by mining mafias and DMK-linked actors to destabilise a fragile AIADMK government.

2017 – Anti-NEET Movement
DMK-backed protests fronted by activists like Prince Gajendra Babu. The tragic suicide of Anitha was politicised to fuel sustained unrest.

2018 – Neutrino Observatory Protests
Led by DMK allies and environmental activists, resulting in project abandonment.

2018 – Anti-Sterlite Agitation, Thoothukudi
Catholic priests, pastors, and evangelical figures such as Mohan C. Lazarus allegedly mobilised protesters. Churches served as assembly points. Thirteen civilians died; India later became a net importer of copper.

2019 – Salem–Chennai Expressway Protests
Environmental objections fronted by activists later linked to foreign-funded NGOs. Project stalled, then quietly revived after DMK came to power.

These movements followed a consistent pattern: environmental or social justice framing, NGO mobilisation, religious networks on the ground, and political capitalisation by the DMK.

The NGO–Activist–Funding Web

Several activists frequently appear across these movements:

  • Nithyanand Jayaraman – The Other Media
  • G. Sundarrajan – Poovulagin Nanbargal
  • Henri Tiphagne – People’s Watch
  • Mohan C. Lazarus – Jesus Redeems Ministries

Investigations highlight foreign funding links through organisations such as Caritas Internationalis, Misereor, Bread for the World, Asia Foundation, and others – many tied to global church networks or Western foundations.

It was against this backdrop that the Union government tightened FCRA regulations between 2016–2018, cancelling licences of nearly 19,000 NGOs and placing entities like the Ford Foundation and Soros-linked networks under prior-permission regimes.

This crackdown explains why mass street protests subsided and why political mobilisation has shifted towards electoral projects instead.

Is Vijay That Christutva Electoral Project?

Vijay’s political ambitions did not begin with TVK in 2024.

They trace early signals back to 2012, when Vijay engaged with the Anna Hazare movement in Delhi.

It is reported that after an alleged snub by the Congress leadership, Vijay explored political backing from controversial figures such as Lottery Martin, a businessman with known international religious links.

When TVK was formally launched on 2 February 2024, the composition of Vijay’s core team, seems to be dominated by Christians, with only a handful of exceptions.

Vijay himself is a Christian and his inner circle, messaging discipline, and cultural positioning reflect dual signalling: overt secularism in public, quiet religious alignment in structure.

Cultural Signalling: Pongal, Tamil New Year, and Silence

Vijay’s cultural interventions have also drawn attention.

He has publicly endorsed celebrating Pongal (Thai 1) as Tamil New Year, aligning with the DMK’s long-standing attempt to detach Hindu religious traditions from Tamil identity. Also note his silence on festivals like Vinayakar Chaturthi, while selectively invoking social justice icons and narratives.

According to detractors, this mirrors a broader strategy: de-Hinduisation framed as rationalism, creating space for evangelical expansion.

The Endgame: A Christian CM For Tamil Nadu?

The ultimate goal seems to be to establish a Christian Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu. With Vijay’s political entry, the pieces of the puzzle seem to be falling into place. His Christian affiliations, Loyola connections, and alleged backing by evangelists suggest a larger agenda at play. If successful, Vijay could become the face of a new political order in Tamil Nadu, one that aligns with the interests of powerful religious syndicates.

A Political Drama Scripted By Evangelists?

As Vijay prepares to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections, the allegations surrounding his rise cannot be ignored. From his Christian affiliations and Loyola connections to the alleged involvement of the Loyola syndicate and the shadow of evangelism, the allegations paint a troubling picture. Is Vijay being propped up as a Christian alternative to the Dravidian parties? Are his political ambitions being funded and guided by powerful religious networks? The answers to these questions could determine the future of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

In the end, Vijay’s story may not just be about an actor entering politics – it could be a carefully scripted drama, with Christian evangelists pulling the strings behind the scenes. And if history is any indication, the consequences could be far-reaching, not just for Tamil Nadu, but for the entire nation.

From Terror Plots To Rape Cases: 14 Criminal Incidents Linked To Pakistanis & Bangladeshis In Greece

On 2 February 2026, Greece’s Immigration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris ordered the shutdown of all illegal mosques operating in Athens and the deportation of foreign nationals running them, targeting roughly 60 unlicensed sites. The directive followed enforcement action against a Bangladeshi national who had been operating an unauthorized place of worship.

Authorities said the move formed part of a broader security and immigration enforcement framework built on data and investigations conducted between 2018 and 2026. Officials linked illegal residency networks to organised crime, migrant smuggling, violent and sexual offences, narcotics trafficking, deportation proceedings, and counter-terror probes. The crackdown also focused on unlicensed religious spaces allegedly operating outside regulatory oversight.

Below is a documented compilation of major enforcement and criminal cases cited in connection with the wider security assessment.

#1 Crackdown Announced on Illegal Mosques in Athens – February 2026 – Accused: Bangladeshi national

Migration Minister Thanos Plevris announced a coordinated operation to identify and shut down illegal mosques across the Municipality of Athens and deport foreign nationals operating them. The action followed the revocation of the residence permit of a Bangladeshi man running an unlicensed mosque in Agios Nikolaos. His premises were sealed, he was sentenced to prison for operating without a permit, and a deportation order was issued under Article 28 of Law 5224/2025 with no voluntary departure window. He was arrested by the Oropou Security Department and remanded for judicial proceedings.

#4 Two Pakistanis Arrested Over Planned Terror Attack – March 2023

Greek counter-terror police arrested two Pakistani nationals accused of planning mass-casualty attacks targeting Jewish and Israeli sites. Intelligence support from Mossad indicated links to an Iran-backed network. Authorities said the suspects, aged 27 and 29, had entered Greece illegally from Turkey and were in advanced stages of operational planning. A third suspect abroad was charged in absentia. The plot reportedly targeted a high-symbolism Jewish facility in Athens.

#5 Pakistani Man Arrested for Murder of Greek Partner – September 2022

A 30-year-old Pakistani man was arrested for murdering his 35-year-old Greek partner, Ioanna. She was found dead in their basement apartment with fatal head injuries inflicted by a blunt object, her body wrapped in bedding. Reports indicated prior domestic abuse complaints. The accused fled Greece but was later arrested in the Netherlands and extradited. Authorities treated the case as domestic violence–related homicide.

#6 Pakistani National Sentenced for Serial Attacks on Women – January 2022

A Pakistani national received a seven-year prison sentence for a series of violent assaults targeting women. The primary case involved a young woman beaten and nearly raped while en route to visit her mother, saved by a cyclist’s intervention. Investigators later linked him to multiple similar attacks. Authorities identified 16 victims, with additional related cases remaining under judicial review.

#7 Illegal Migrant Arrested for Murder of Teenage Girl – August 2022

A 30-year-old Pakistani illegal immigrant, identified as Ahsan alias Sunni, was arrested for the murder of 17-year-old Nicoletta. The crime was described as premeditated. He fled toward Kilkis before arrest.

#8 Pakistani Man Arrested for Attempted Assault on Child – January 2021

A 20-year-old Pakistani national, Ihtisham Ali, was arrested for attempting to sexually assault a five-year-old child. He worked at an equestrian club. TNPSC Group 2, 2A Exams Cancelled After Utter Chaos And Administrative Failure Of DMK Govt

Imagine this: Young men and women from villages and towns across Tamil Nadu, many from modest backgrounds, balancing jobs, families, and coaching classes. They studied through power cuts, borrowed books, skipped meals, and ignored social lives – all for a shot at stable government employment. They woke up early, travelled long distances, only to find chaos at the gates. Overcrowded halls, mismatched allocations, and finally, the announcement: Exam cancelled. The frustration, the tears, the wasted money on travel, accommodation, and last-minute revisions – all because the DMK cannot manage basic logistics.

In yet another damning indictment of the DMK’s “Dravidian Model of Development” – which is fast revealing itself as the Dravidian Model of Disaster – the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) was forced to cancel the Group II A Mains examination on Sunday after a colossal administrative failure. Over 9,000 candidates, who had poured years of blood, sweat, and sleepless nights into preparation for just 1,000 vacancies in assistant and revenue inspector posts, saw their dreams crushed because the DMK government couldn’t even assign exam centres properly.

A “technical glitch,” they call it. How convenient. Around 600 candidates were wrongly allotted centres due to a software error, leading to a situation where nearly 1,000 aspirants descended on a single college equipped for only 300. The afternoon Tamil eligibility test was also postponed. There’s no clarity on revised exam dates as youth who have already sacrificed prime years of their lives stare at a bleak future.

BJP State President K. Annamalai didn’t mince words in his scathing condemnation. “The DMK government’s mess in arranging exam centres has led to the cancellation of today’s TNPSC Group 2 and 2A exams. This is strongly condemnable. They are in such a pathetic state that they cannot even make basic arrangements for government exams,” he posted, highlighting how this fiasco has robbed Tamil Nadu’s youth of their hard-earned opportunities.

Annamalai went further, voicing the suspicion on every aspirant’s mind: “This kind of chaos has never happened in so many years. Is this because DMK ministers, with their history of accepting bribes to provide government jobs, orchestrated it?” He demanded that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin apologise to the state’s youth.

This is not the first time TNPSC exams under DMK have descended into farce. Previous Group exams have seen allegations of irregularities, protests by aspirants, and demands for re-exams.

In 2024, TNPSC cancelled the Assistant Public Prosecutor exam originally scheduled for this year and rescheduled it to February 2025 following disruptions and technical issues.

The TNPSC Group 2 and 2A mains exam on February 25, 2023, descended into chaos across multiple districts due to incorrect distribution of question papers and OMR sheets, delays, misinformation by invigilators, and alleged compromise of exam integrity, leaving candidates outraged and uncertain about their future.

In 2023, TNPSC’s Group 4 exam results sparked controversy after reports claimed a disproportionate number of successful candidates came from a few coaching centres

The pattern is clear: When the DMK is in power, recruitment processes become avenues for patronage and corruption rather than merit-based selection.

The DMK’s track record with public recruitment is littered with scandals. From cash-for-jobs rackets involving crores to repeated allegations of paper leaks, tampering, and favouritism, TNPSC under DMK rule has become synonymous with inefficiency rather than merit. Even when the party was in opposition, its leaders screamed for CBI probes into TNPSC scams. Now in power, the same party presides over a system where honest preparation is punished and connections (or cash) prevail.

Complaint Seeks Demolition Of Illegal Church Built On Residential Land By Missionary Org Calvary Temple Foundation

The Legal Rights Protection Forum has filed a formal complaint with the West Godavari District Collector, alleging large-scale violations of building and planning laws by the Calvary Temple Foundation, including the construction and operation of a church on land sanctioned exclusively for residential apartment use.

In a detailed representation dated February 7, 2026, addressed to the Collector and District Magistrate of West Godavari, the Forum has sought immediate demolition of what it describes as an “unauthorised religious structure” constructed at Kuchenapalli village in Tadepalligudem mandal, within the jurisdiction of the Eluru Urban Development Authority (EUDA).

Alleged Misuse Of Residential Approval

According to the complaint, EUDA had granted provisional approval on March 27, 2025, for construction of a Ground + One (G+1) residential apartment building over a total land extent of 24,388.58 square yards spread across multiple survey numbers. As a mandatory statutory condition, Calvary Temple Foundation, represented by Pola Lazarus Enoch, executed a mortgage deed on April 5, 2025, in favour of EUDA, mortgaging 10 per cent of the proposed built-up area along with proportionate undivided land share.

The Forum alleges that this mortgage was executed specifically to ensure compliance with residential land use and sanctioned building plans, and that any deviation would amount to a breach of statutory conditions.

However, the complaint claims that instead of constructing residential apartments, the Foundation has built and is operating a large church at the same site, conducting regular religious gatherings and public events. The Forum has cited videos uploaded on YouTube in November 2025, including inauguration and Christmas celebration footage, in which the structure is reportedly described as the “largest church in West Godavari district”.

Change Of Land Use, Safety Concerns Flagged

The Forum has alleged that the construction and use of the building as a church amounts to an illegal change of land use obtained through “misrepresentation and suppression of material facts”. It has further claimed that the building was never sanctioned as a public or semi-public assembly structure and does not comply with fire safety norms, parking requirements, access regulations, emergency exits, or National Building Code provisions applicable to places of public congregation.

The complaint also raises public interest concerns, including traffic congestion, illegal parking, noise pollution, and potential fire and life safety hazards, stating that the structure poses serious risks to public safety.

Undertakings Cited

In its representation, the Forum has pointed out that, as part of the building permission process, the applicant had given an undertaking authorising EUDA to demolish any unauthorised construction without prior notice and at the owner’s cost, if violations of the sanctioned plan were found. The present construction, it argues, squarely attracts those undertakings.

Demand For Immediate Action

The Legal Rights Protection Forum has urged the District Collector to direct immediate demolition of the unauthorised structure without issuing further notice, revoke the residential building permission allegedly obtained through misrepresentation, and initiate criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings against Calvary Temple Foundation for violations of law.

The complaint has requested that the matter be treated as urgent in the interest of planned urban development, lawful administration, and public safety. No official response from the district administration or the Calvary Temple Foundation was available at the time of filing this report.

Dravidian Model Tamil Nadu: Activist Alleges Temple Money Being Used To Invest In Financially Distressed Poorly Rated State NBFC

The 2024–2025 Annual Report of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL), formerly TANGEDCO, has drawn attention for its depiction of the utility’s fragile financial position, with disclosures indicating structural stress, heavy indebtedness, and continued reliance on government backing.

Financial statements in the report point to a deeply strained balance sheet, with liabilities significantly outweighing assets and the corporation carrying a negative net worth exceeding ₹1 lakh crore. The utility’s operations appear sustained through a combination of state support and large-scale borrowings.

The report also records moves to expand borrowing capacity, with shareholder approval sought to raise borrowing limits up to ₹1.27 lakh crore, underscoring the scale of debt dependence required to sustain power distribution operations in the state.

Image Source: TNPDCL – 16th Annual Report FY 2024-25

While TNPDCL has reported an operational profit for the financial year, the broader financial disclosures, including accumulated losses, liabilities, and financing costs, indicate continuing structural insolvency pressures despite accounting surpluses.

Attention has also turned to the financing chain linked to the power utility. Tamil Nadu Power Finance & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (TNPFIDC), a state-owned non-banking financial company, functions as a key lender to power and infrastructure entities, including TNPDCL/TANGEDCO, by mobilising institutional deposits and market borrowings.

In this context, concerns have been raised regarding the investment of temple-linked funds in TNPFIDC. Available material indicates that large sums belonging to Hindu religious institutions have been deposited in the NBFC, which carries a BBB- credit rating – the lowest rung within investment-grade classifications.

The exposure has drawn scrutiny due to the financial stress in the downstream power sector entities to which TNPFIDC lends, raising questions about risk concentration and fiduciary prudence in the deployment of religious endowment funds.

Estimates circulating in public discourse place temple fund exposure to TNPFIDC at around ₹2,700 crore. However, a detailed audited breakdown of temple-wise deposits within the NBFC’s financial statements is not publicly enumerated in the material reviewed.

“People Who Study Hindi Sell Panipuri, Pakoda”: DMK MLA Ezhilan Goes On Anti-Hindi Tirade, Insults Hindus Saying, “Lotus Will Never Bloom As Long As We Eat Beef Here”

DMK anti-Hindu Ezhilan Naganathan

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Thousand Lights MLA Ezhilan Naganathan, known for spewing venom against Hinduism, is back in focus with another inflammatory speech against Hindus and Hindi-speaking migrant workers. He joins his colleagues in spewing venom against Hindi speakers.

Speaking at a public event, Ezhilan first took aim at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, who has previously used the phrase to criticise the ruling party.

He said, “I ask, ‘Is the DMK an evil force?’ I ask, ‘Is the DMK an evil force?’ Yes — we are an evil force. For whom are we an evil force? We are an evil force to Manusmriti followers. We are an evil force to those who try to uphold the varna-ashrama doctrine based on caste. We are an evil force to those who do politics based on religion. We are an evil force to those who try to disturb and damage Tamil culture. We are an evil force to those who try to block women’s progress. Whoever tries to impose exams like NEET so that our children dont study – to them we are an evil force. Whoever acts against protecting this nation’s honour and this land’s rights – to all of them, we are an evil force, an evil force, an evil force.”

Continuing his address, Ezhilan referred to education rankings during the AIADMK regime led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

He said, “In education, eighth rank, that was during Edappadi’s rule. I did not give that ranking, India Today gave that ranking. I am saying this here, I am also a doctor, Lakshmanan is also a doctor. When one MLA spoke there, I asked, did you have a composed MLA? There was an MLA, is he someone who speaks calmly? Will he speak calmly at this time? When will he ever speak calmly? You voted like this, for a person who cannot even speak three continuous lines properly to the media, he has now gone to the Rajya Sabha. Has he made any speech there? Any record? Any note where he spoke properly? Any note where he spoke calmly? I ask, how did you vote for him? Think about it. Think for a minute whom you voted for. I am asking you to think.”

Ezhilan also made political references involving the BJP’s lotus symbol and social practices.

He said, “Diwali and Christmas are the same, we have lived like that. As long as we eat beef here, the lotus will never bloom here. As long as we eat biryani here, the lotus will never bloom here. They are trying to break that. They are plotting in many ways.”

He added, “One, they broke the AIADMK using Edappadi, creating a slave mentality, and are standing here. They are not giving funds or support. They are telling the Chief Minister – accept the three-language policy, accept Hindi, then we will give ₹3,000 crore for your schools. But our CM asks back, ‘This is our life, our life language, our life itself. Our job is to protect the language. We are the organization who carried out the language war. We will not accept it even if you give ₹10,000 crore.’ But what does Edappadi say? But what did Edappadi do? During Edappadi’s rule, a government order was issued allowing people without Tamil knowledge to get government jobs. That traitorous Edappadi government allowed anyone to enter our employment space.”

He further said, “I ask – what progress have they seen by studying Hindi? People from very backward sections who studied Hindi come here and do construction work, sell pani puri, sell beeda and pakoda. But our children from backward communities become software engineers, become doctors, go abroad for jobs.”

Linking language policy to social mobility, Ezhilan said, “That foundation was laid by Anna. If today I am a doctor, if Lakshmanan sir is a doctor, we speak Tamil and English because of the two-language policy given by Anna. If children from our homes speak fluent English today, it is because of Anna’s two-language policy. That is what led to progress.”

He added, “To destroy that, what are they doing? They say – accept the three-language policy, they are saying to accept Hindi indirectly. They are blackmailing us saying only if we do that, they will give funds. Are we going to allow that? Are we going to allow our progress to be blocked?”

Ezhilan then ‘warned’ about communal polarisation and political manipulation.

He said, “I ask you – should Tamil Nadu be turned into a land of communal riots? We are moving on a path of progress, a path of science. Our children are becoming scientists, AI scientists.”

Referring to the state government’s flagship programme, he said, “Through the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme alone, 44 lakh students have benefited and are becoming managers in multinational companies, marketing engineers, scientists in manufacturing sectors. Why should we be pulled backward? I am asking you – should we be dragged back?”

He concluded with a broader political appeal: “Think – I ask you to think. I ask the people of Tamil Nadu. Democracy is fundamental. Many political parties will come before you. Many ideologies will come. Artificial actors will come. They will even dance on stage. But what will you do? They will not open their mouths to oppose the BJP. But they will open their mouths only to call the DMK an evil force. Don’t you see that conspiracy? A conspiracy is underway to exploit your eagerness; to undermine Tamil Nadu’s progress and manipulate you for their own purposes. I ask – who are the real heroes? The real hero is the Chief Minister who is working to make Tamil Nadu the number one state.”

DMK-Congress Rift Widens: Karti Chidambaram Says “Delay Is Entirely On DMK’s Side” In Finalizing Negotiations

“Delay Is Entirely On DMK Side”: Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram On Congress-DMK Negotiations

Senior Congress leader and MP Karti Chidambaram on Friday, 6 February 2026, while speaking to the press, said the DMK had not yet constituted its committee for alliance talks, even days after preliminary discussions, and asserted that the Congress plays a crucial value-addition role in any electoral coalition in Tamil Nadu.

Addressing reporters amid ongoing speculation over seat-sharing and alliance dynamics, Chidambaram said questions about delays in negotiations should be directed at the DMK. He pointed out that DMK parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi had held direct talks with the Congress leadership, but that progress had stalled thereafter.

“It has been nine days since those talks took place. They said they would form a committee, but that committee has still not been constituted. On our side, the committee is ready. We have already appointed a five-member team for discussions. Once they form their committee, we are ready to talk,” he said, adding that the delay in forming the panel lay with the DMK.

Responding to remarks from political commentators and DMK functionaries that the Congress had weakened electorally, Chidambaram said leaders from both parties often made sharp comments but that such exchanges should not distract from formal negotiations.

“Both are large parties with many members, and individuals will have different opinions. After leadership-level talks, we have made our position clear – we have formed our committee; they should form theirs; then seat-sharing and other matters can be decided through committee discussions,” he said.

On whether senior Congress leaders were monitoring the public exchanges, Chidambaram said he was unsure how seriously such remarks were being viewed. “Many may find such remarks entertaining, but whether they are paying attention to them – I have my doubts,” he noted.

He dismissed suggestions of confusion within the alliance, stating that the situation could be resolved if the DMK immediately constituted its committee and began formal talks with the Congress panel. With elections approaching, he acknowledged that “in these two months, we will have to tolerate many such opinions circulating on social media.”

On statements that the alliance could win only if both parties remained together, Chidambaram agreed, saying, “Both parties know that only if they remain together in the alliance can both win.”

Addressing questions on alliance arithmetic in Puducherry, he said no decisions had been taken yet. He noted that Congress leader V Vaithilingam was handling discussions there and that talks had not formally begun.

Chidambaram also reacted to reports about high application numbers for party tickets in actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), saying enthusiasm around star figures did not automatically translate into electoral success. “Fan bases can become support bases. Support bases can become vote banks. But whether a vote bank converts into seats – that I am not sure about,” he said.

Reflecting on the Congress party’s position in Tamil Nadu, Chidambaram acknowledged its standalone limitations but emphasized its strategic importance in coalitions.

“Since 1967, we have not been directly in power. We are not in a position to contest alone and win – I accept that. But we are a value-addition party. Only if we are there does the alliance get the stamp of secularism. Without us, that secular stamp cannot be firmly applied,” he said.

He added that the Congress should be viewed as a multiplier rather than merely an additive force within alliances, particularly in terms of minority confidence and ideological positioning.

Dravidian Model Tamil Nadu: Lizards, Insects Found In Drinking Water Unit At HR&CE-Administered Thiruverkadu Karumariamman Temple

Lizards, Insects Found In Drinking Water Unit At HR&CE-Administered Thiruverkadu Karumariamman Temple

A controversy has erupted at the Thiruverkadu Devi Karumariamman Temple near Chennai after lizards and insects were allegedly found inside a purified drinking water dispensing unit installed for devotees within the temple premises.

The temple, regarded as one of the most prominent shrines in the region, witnesses heavy footfall daily, with devotees visiting from Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and other parts of Tamil Nadu to offer prayers and fulfil vows. On auspicious and special occasions, the number of visitors runs into thousands.

According to devotees, the water purification and dispensing machine had remained non-functional and poorly maintained for a prolonged period despite being installed as part of basic infrastructure facilities for visitors. The issue came to light after visuals surfaced showing lizards and cockroaches floating inside the water storage tank connected to the purification unit.

A regular devotee, who had reportedly raised multiple complaints earlier without any action being taken, recorded a video of the contaminated water tank and circulated it on social media. The footage subsequently went viral, triggering shock and concern among devotees.

Following the circulation of the video, temple authorities stated that action would be initiated in connection with the incident. They indicated that maintenance-related lapses would be examined and appropriate steps taken against those responsible.

The incident has caused concern among devotees, particularly given that the contaminated unit had been installed to supply purified drinking water to the large number of visitors frequenting the temple.

Over 100 Boxes Of Explosives Seized From Tamil Nadu Vehicle Hidden Under Watermelons In Palakkad

Over 100 Boxes Of Explosives Seized From Tamil Nadu Vehicle Hidden Under Watermelons In Palakkad

Police in Kerala’s Palakkad district seized a pick-up van carrying more than 100 boxes of explosives, concealed beneath a load of watermelons, during a late-night interception on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, amid heightened security checks ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.

According to an officer from the Palakkad Town South Police Station, the vehicle was found transporting over 100 boxes of gelatin sticks along with more than 20 boxes of detonators. The explosive materials had been hidden under a consignment of watermelons in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

The seizure occurred as state authorities intensified security surveillance across Kerala in the run-up to the upcoming Assembly polls. Police acted on prior information indicating that a large quantity of explosives was being illegally transported into the state. During routine inspection, officers signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver allegedly failed to comply. Police then pursued the van, intercepted it, and took the driver into custody.

During preliminary interrogation, the driver informed investigators that the explosives had been loaded in Coimbatore and were being transported to a quarry site in Thrissur. Police stated that initial assessments suggested the consignment was intended for quarry operations.

Addressing the broader issue of explosive circulation in the region, police indicated that the sale of such materials was restricted to a limited number of licensed agencies. They noted that the trade often functioned as a monopoly in several areas, resulting in inflated prices, which in turn encouraged unlicensed operators to sell explosives clandestinely at cheaper rates.

Police said a case under the Explosive Substances Act would be registered against the driver following completion of seizure formalities. An official case has been registered by Palakkad Police in connection with the incident.
