Kempegowda International Airport becomes first airport in South Asia to have disabled aircraft recovery kit

Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has become the first airport in India as well as in South Asia recently to have installed a disabled aircraft recovery kit, reports Financial Express.

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) was quoted as saying, “The kit includes ground preparation tools, de-bogging, aircraft lifting, towing, tethering, along with all other associated aspects of both narrow as well as wide-body aircraft”.

This technology will now enable this airport with recovering Code F-compatible aircraft during any aircraft incident on the runway.

BIAL had signed a deal last year with German aircraft recovery kit maker Kunz GmbH to manufacture, commission, supply as well as maintain this specialized equipment.

BIAL has formed a task force that will undergo extensive hands-on training at the state-of-the-art recovery training facility of Kunz GmBh for a quick response recovery team to address critical situations.

Kerala cricket team sparks controversy for its all Muslim players

The recent announcement of the final list of players for the South Zone Junior tennis ball cricket tournament from Kerala has become an object of controversy because of the fact that it has only Muslims. Notably, the team coach and the manager are also Muslims.

This was shared by BJP leader Sandeep Vachaspati with a satirical caption that said that this was not an ‘All-Muslim’ team but a team from ‘secular Kerala’. He went on to say that this secularism was surprisingly one-sided, as though Hindus and Christians were unqualified to play cricket. This tweet received a lot of support and a lot of members from the Twitterati came out saying that they had faced a lot of discrimination whilst studying in Muslim majority institutions and Muslim run colleges.

The following are the list of members on the team: N Muhammad Yasin (Captain), A.K Muhammad Sajad (Vice-Captain), Ahammad Finash, K.P Adnan, C. Shamil, Muhammad Rabeeh, Damsas Muhammad, C.P Abdulla, K. Abdulla Omar, T. Salih, P. Mishaal, Ashmil Sahan. Coach- M.K Munir. Manager: Majeed Bava.

A lot of members also shared an incident where a similar incident had happened with a club that had attempted to conduct an ‘all-Hindu’ tournament and that they had to cancel it after police intervention. One user posted a copy of the flyer shown by Asianet News, the Malayalam TV channel, featuring the sentence: “Only Hindu players should play this game.” This added fuel to the existing issue.

Know all about the Jayalalithaa museum

The memorial of the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is built in the shape of a phoenix at Chennai Marina Beach. It has a museum on the left and a knowledge park on the right. It was opened by Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami earlier this year.

Upon entering the museum, a life size statue of Jayalalithaa made of silicon stands. One can also talk to this statue. The museum also features photographs depicting Jayalalithaa’s biography and the highlights of her life. In addition, photos of Jayalalithaa from her childhood to her death are on display digitally.

The highlight of this is that a hologram of Jayalalithaa has been programmed to come in person and answer the questions that the visitors choose on the touch screen. In the knowledge park to the right of the memorial, one can stand with Jayalalithaa on a digital screen and take a selfie. If someone registers the cell phone number on the computer there, the selfie taken with Jayalalithaa will be sent to the WhatsApp number.

While cycling around the park, one can learn all about the projects implemented by Jayalalithaa in 2D animation. One can also pay floral tributes to Jayalalithaa digitally. The flower of our choice will fall on the image of Jayalalithaa appearing on the 2D screen and the scent of the flower selected will be sprayed all around, providing a 5D experience to those who visit this place.

After row with Twitter and outrage over ‘Tandav’, Home Ministry issues new rules for social media, digital media and OTT platforms

Following an online face-off with the microblogging site Twitter, the Home Ministry has issued a set of guidelines for social media platforms, online news media and Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms.

Tweeting about this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “All social media platforms have to abide by Indian laws. The new rules, announced today, will further empower social media users by institutionalising redressal mechanism and ensuring resolution of their grievances. I applaud @narendramodi ji and @rsprasad ji. #ResponsibleFreedom”. Another tweet in the thread went on to say, “Modi govt is committed to provide a level playing field for all digital media and OTT platforms. The Code of Ethics and 3 tier self regulation for digital media is welcome. I congratulate @narendramodi ji and @PrakashJavdekar ji for these much needed rules. #ResponsibleFreedom.”

The rules were published in a document, called the “Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code”, which aims to achieve tighter control over social media platforms. The document specifies the guidelines for the publication of content and specifically mentions the fact that Big Tech firms should make sure that a post is taken down within 36 hours of a government order against it. It also went on to say that they should also assist in investigations or other cyber security-related incidents within 72 hours of a request.

The new rules framed by the Centre lay down a three-tier grievance redressal mechanism.

There have been widespread concerns about digital content, especially on OTT platforms. Recently, Amazon Prime’s web series ‘Tandav’ had created a furore after it portrayed Hindu deities in a degrading way, insulting the sentiments and sensitivities of the Hindu community.

“There is a Censor Board for films, but OTT platforms have no such mechanism. For OTT platforms, we have decided on a 3-tier system,” Union Minister for  Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar said.

Publishers of news on digital media would be required to observe the ‘Norms of Journalistic Conduct’ of the Press Council of India and the ‘Programme Code’ under the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act. Setting out general principles, the rules say that publishers should take into consideration that the content does not “affect the sovereignty and integrity of India” or “jeopardises the security of the State”, among other things.

Facebook faced a global backlash from publishers and politicians last week after blocking news feeds in Australia in a dispute with the government, when new Australian legislation mandated that Facebook share its revenue with local news outlets for using their content.

France summons Pakistan envoy to protest against statement made by President Arif Alvi

pakistan president arif alvi france pakistan envoy

The French government has not taken kindly to Pakistani President Arif Alvi’s remark criticising the ‘New French Counter Radicalism Law’.

Alvi had said that the new French law, which supposedly cracks down on Islamic radicalism, stigmatises Muslims all over the world. However, he conveniently forgot about the blasphemy laws that are prevalent in Pakistan and has been used to target minorities.

“Muslims are for interfaith harmony, while West is practicing Islamophobia & France is passing regressive laws”,  Alvi had tweeted from his official Twitter handle. President Alvi also said that the French cartoon depicting Prophet Mohammad is an insult to all Muslims.

The French foreign ministry summoned Pakistan’s charge d’affaires to protest against Alvi’s remarks.

The French legislative assembly recently passed a new law to check the growing Islamic radicalisation in the country. The new law does not name any religion specifically, but Islam is at the forefront of scrutiny after the brutal murder of French school teacher Samuel Paty.

Samuel Paty was beheaded in October last year by his student Abdoullakh Abouyedovich Anzorov for showing a picture of Prophet Muhammad in his class and having an open discussion on the concept of freedom of speech and expression.

After Paty’s murder, the French people took to the streets and demanded a law to check the growing Islamic radicalisation in the country. France has been a victim of several terror attacks in the last few years and there is a growing consensus among the French that measures need to be taken to curb Islamic terror.

Nirav Modi loses case in UK court, paves way for extradition to India

Nirav Modi UK

In a blow to stave off extradition to India, a UK extradition judge has ruled that fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi has a case to answer for in India.

Nirav Modi has been fighting a nearly two-year-long legal battle to stop his extradition to India, where he is accused of fraud and money laundering amounting to nearly ₹ 14,000-crore.

Nirav Modi, appeared via video conferencing from Wandsworth Prison in south-west London at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where District Judge Samuel Goozee delivered his judgment. Now the magistrates’ court ruling will be forwarded to the UK Home Secretary Priti Patel for a sign-off.

District Judge Samuel Goozee said, “I am satisfied that Nirav Modi’s extradition to India is in compliance per human rights, and there is no evidence that if extradited Nirav Modi will not get justice”.

However, Nirav Modi will still have the possibility of appeals in the High Court on either side depending on the outcome.

Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, who is also a fugitive on the run, are accused of routing transactions of about ₹ 13,600 crore through fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) of Punjab National Bank (PNB).

Both men left India in January 2018, weeks before the scam was revealed. According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Nirav Modi diverted over ₹ 4,000 crore of the ₹ 6,519 crore outstanding fraudulent LoUs issued by PNB to his firms, through 15 “dummy companies” based in the UAE and Hong Kong.

Also, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has found that PNB officials had issued fraudulent LoUs to Nirav Modi’s firms since 2008.

Indian pharma sector looking for ways to reduce dependency on China for API

India China API

To ensure India reduces its dependency on China when it comes to Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), Indian drug makers are now trying to either manufacture them in-house or source them from reliable local manufacturers.

APIs are the chemical compounds that are used to make medicinal drugs. They give the drugs the intended effects.

China supplied half of India’s API needs in 2019, reports Economic Times.

India’s place as the world’s pharmacy is now uncontested after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. India has showcased its ability to manufacture vaccines which have been supplied globally.

India has the world’s largest production capacities for both generic drugs and vaccines. However, for a while, Indian drug makers have come to realise that the time has come to end the dependency on the supply of raw materials from China.

After the Doklam clash between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh last year and the disruption to supplies from China due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading Indian drug makers like Cipla, Cadila Healthcare and Sun Pharmaceuticals have decided to reduce their dependency on China for raw materials.

“Because of the anti-China sentiment… most of the companies are working towards de-risking themselves in terms of making it clear that their supply chain linkages with China are limited,” Gaurav Suchak, supply head of Cadila, was quoted as saying in the BioAsia conference.

“For the critical API molecules, the idea is to go for a backward integration where you are in control of that pie which is going to make the most impact on your business, and also to make sure that the entire value chain is secure,” Suchak added.

Suchak further said that most of the pharmaceutical companies in India are also looking for reliable local vendors who can promise consistency and competitive prices.

Cipla has launched an “API re-imagination” programme aimed to expand its manufacturing capabilities and avail incentives under the government’s PLI scheme for the sector.

A worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was brutally hacked to death allegedly by members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). The SDPI is the political wing of Popular Front of India (PFI).

The clash comes days after the PFI had held unauthorised rallies in minority-dominated districts in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In these rallies, people wearing the RSS uniform were depicted as wearing chains, while Muslims in traditional attire marched alongside them wielding swords.

The murder took place in Alappuzha district on Wednesday night. Three activists of the RSS and SDPI were seriously injured in the clash, according to reports. The area saw heavy police deployment to prevent a further escalation of violence.

Police have identified the victim as Nandu alias Rahul Krishna, 26. Nandu was the RSS shakha mukhya shikshak at Nagamkulangara in Wayalar village panchayat in Alappuzha.

According to the police, the SPDI had held a meeting at Nagamkulangara two days ago as part of their state-wide protest and boycott campaign against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was in Kasaragod last Sunday to flag off the BJP’s ‘Vijay Yatra’, a state-wide pre-poll campaign and tour. The SDPI workers had raised provocative slogans against the BJP.

On Wednesday, the SDPI conducted another political campaign march in the village. The RSS had objected to the alleged provocative speeches. Later in the night, both sides took out separate marches. The police said the RSS workers were attacked after the SDPI march, leading to clashes and death of one of the RSS workers.

Kerala BJP President K Surendran took to Twitter and condemned the horrific crime. He also asked for a ban on the SDPI.

The BJP has called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Alappuzha district on Thursday.

Feature Image: Representational

An incident has taken place near Palladam in Tiruppur district where devotees stopped some individuals from trying to get a lease for a temple property worth ₹ 20 crores.

The 400-year-old Karivaratharaja Perumal Temple is located at Kalivelampatti near Palladam in Tirupur District. The temple is now in ruins as it lacks proper maintenance. The Karivaratharaja Perumal temple owns 3.5 acres of land in the nearby villages of Kalivelampatti and 6.5 acres in Sukkampalayam.

Devotees in the area have said that all the primary documents note that these are the property of the temple and that some people are trying to get a lease by attaching their name to the chitta for the temple land which was given as a reward by monarchs. They said the total assets of the temple that the encroacher were trying to occupy would be worth up to ₹ 20 crores.

The encroachers have erected a fence on the temple land and gotten an electrical connection. Venkatesh, Assistant Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, has advised the Revenue Department not to lease the temple land. Following this, the power supply to the temple land has been cut off. An official of the HR&CE Department said that the details of the lands given to the temple were withheld by the Revenue Department officials and they could not collect the full details of the temple property.
