An old video of music maestro Ilaiyaraaja has sparked fresh discussion with his remarks about the house of freedom fighter and communist leader I. Mayandi Bharathi. In the video clipping from an interview that took place nearly a year ago, Ilaiyaraaja stated that “If a room in communist leader Mayandi Bharathi’s house had to be sought for rent, permission must be obtained from the party.”

Mayandi Bharathi’s house holds a special place in Ilaiyaraaja’s own life and musical journey. During the early years of his career, when he was yet to become one of India’s most celebrated composers, Ilaiyaraaja and his brothers, popularly known as the Pavalar Brothers, practiced on the upper floor of Mayandi Bharathi’s residence in Madurai.
Mayandi Bharathi reportedly provided them with a space that became the foundation of their artistic journey. The house reportedly served as the venue where the brothers stayed, practised music, rehearsed performances and developed their craft during their formative years.
Before entering the Tamil film industry, Ilaiyaraaja performed alongside his elder brother Pavalar Varadarajan in political and social awareness programmes, public meetings and stage performances. As reported in Tamil Indian Express, rehearsals by the Pavalar Brothers’ troupe, the composition of new songs and several artistic activities were all carried out from the upper floor of Mayandi Bharathi’s house.
The Pavalar Brothers also maintained close ties with the Communist movement during that period. They actively participated in the movement’s cultural outreach programmes, travelling across towns to perform songs aimed at creating awareness among workers, farmers and the general public. Veterans associated with the movement recall that Mayandi Bharathi’s residence was one of the principal centres where these programmes were planned and rehearsed.
Speaking to Puthiya Thalaimurai, Ilaiyaraaja narrating the anecdote said, “If we wanted to stay there, we couldn’t stay in the Communist party office, but those days, we had put our belongings in the party office only. There used to be a Communist leader Mayandi Bharathi, he had a house in Melamasi Veedhi. We heard that a room was to be let out for rent in his house. So we asked him to let it out for rent for us instead of giving it to some unknown person.”
To this, Mayandi Bharathi replied, “If you want to stay here, I need to ask the office, but I am not sure if they will approve it.”
Ilaiyaraaja then thought, “They said it was the Communist party, they spoke about the poor, they spoke about American imperialism, capitalism, we have been doing concerts for Communist gatherings only for nearly 7-8 years and they had to think about giving permission? If crowds gather for Communist meetings, it is because of Pavalar Brothers and not for the leaders. In general, communist cadre alone will participate in all meetings but public would gather only for our concerts. They would stand and listen for hours late into the night and only then leave. That was the quality of our music.”
Ilaiyaraaja continued, “To give his room for rent, why did he (Mayandi Bharathi) have to ask permission from the party? That day, our thoughts changed – this was different, party was different, life was different, human nature is different. Each human is a human. It is we who have to work hard and succeed on our own; there is no one in the world who will help us – I understood this at that point and we moved to Madras.”
