A banner put up in Krishnagiri district ahead of Muharram celebrations has sparked outrage after it prominently featured Islamist ruler Tipu Sultan, a persecutor responsible for the oppression of Hindu communities and the destruction of temples in parts of South India.
According to information shared on social media, the banner was erected in Pochampalli in Krishnagiri district as part of Muharram observances. The display reportedly included an image of Tipu Sultan alongside other religious and symbolic imagery denouncing Hindus/temples, drawing criticism from Hindu groups and local residents.

The inclusion of Tipu Sultan in a public festival banner that was glorifying a figure who persecuted Hindus and forced religious conversions was insensitive to the sentiments of the Hindu community. Such displays unnecessarily provoke communal tensions and amount to the glorification of a controversial historical figure.
Following objections, members of Hindu organisations reportedly removed or tore down the portion of the banner featuring Tipu Sultan.
