Police on Monday (29 June 2026) night arrested a councillor of the Alangulam union for allegedly sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman staff member of a fisheries cooperative society and issuing a life threat to her, police sources said.
The accused was identified as S. Arinarayanan (60), of the Congress party and a resident of Maruthampur village near Alangulam. Police said Arinarayanan runs a matriculation school and is also the chief of the fisheries cooperative society.
According to sources, the victim joined as an employee last week. Arinarayanan allegedly sexually assaulted her multiple times and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone. As the abuse continued, the woman informed her parents, sources added.
Based on a complaint lodged by the woman’s parents, Alangulam police conducted a preliminary inquiry and found a prima facie case. Subsequently, they arrested Arinarayanan under Sections 296(b), 351(3), 75(1)(i) and 75(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. The Judicial Magistrate Court, Alangulam, remanded him to judicial custody in Palayamkottai Central Prison, sources said.
Sources also said Arinarayanan’s wife was a Sub-Registrar in Alangulam a few years ago. During her tenure, Arinarayanan allegedly collected bribes on her behalf from people who approached her office seeking documents, sources added.
In September 2023, sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption conducted searches in the couple’s house and seized several documents, sources said.
