TVK Model: Woman Admitted For Sinus Problem Dies After Month-Long Treatment; Family Alleges Medical Negligence, Lays Siege To Ramanathapuram Govt Hospital

Tension prevailed at the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital for a second consecutive day as the relatives of a 34-year-old woman who died while undergoing treatment refused to receive her body, alleging medical negligence and demanding action against the doctors involved.

The deceased, identified as Tamil Selvi from the Palkarai area of Ramanathapuram, had been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital on 17 May 2026 for treatment of a sinus-related ailment. According to hospital sources, she remained under treatment for nearly a month. However, doctors informed her family on Wednesday (17 June 2026) morning that she had passed away despite medical intervention.

Following her death, family members accused the hospital of providing improper treatment and alleged that medical negligence was responsible for her death. Relatives claimed they had repeatedly raised concerns with hospital authorities as early as 26 May 2026, alleging that Tamil Selvi’s condition was not improving and that adequate treatment was not being provided.

Demanding strict action against the doctors who treated her, the family refused to accept the body and launched a road blockade protest on the Madurai–Rameswaram National Highway in front of the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital on Tuesday evening.

Senior officials later intervened and held discussions with the protesters, following which the agitation was temporarily withdrawn. However, on Thursday (18 June 2026) the relatives once again refused to receive the body and resumed their protest for a second day.

The situation escalated when police attempted to remove the protesters, leading to a scuffle between police personnel and some of the relatives. Following the confrontation, the protesters entered the hospital premises and continued their agitation.

The protesters have demanded the dismissal of the doctors who treated Tamil Selvi as well as action against the Dean of the Government Medical College Hospital. They maintain that accountability must be fixed for the circumstances that led to her death.

The issue has since been brought to the attention of Ramanathapuram District Collector Sivaguru Prabhakaran. Officials said discussions between the Collector and the deceased woman’s relatives were scheduled for around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The outcome of the talks is expected to determine whether the family agrees to receive the body and bring the protest to an end.

Police personnel remain deployed at the hospital premises as a precautionary measure to prevent any further escalation of tensions.
