The Tamil Nadu government is considering a proposal to introduce chicken biryani once a week under the State’s noon meal scheme for school students, School Education Minister Rajmohan said on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, as reported in Hindustan Times.
Speaking to reporters, the minister traced the evolution of Tamil Nadu’s school meal programme through successive governments and said he had proposed adding chicken biryani as the next step.
“The Justice Party brought food, the Kamaraj rule made it a midday meal, Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) came and brought eggs into this, puratchithalaivar (M G Ramachandran) changed it to a nutritious meal, Amma (Jayalalithaa) came and brought eggs every week… many changes occurred. Similarly, I had a desire… I have put forward a request: why not serve chicken biryani once a week?”
Rajmohan said he had submitted a detailed proposal, backed by relevant data, to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who is currently examining the recommendation.

The minister also announced plans to improve the State’s school breakfast programme. Pointing out that the government currently spends around ₹15 per student on breakfast, he said the menu would be revamped by replacing frequently served items such as wheat and rava upma with more nutritious and appealing alternatives.
During the interaction, Rajmohan also criticised the Union government, accusing it of withholding funds meant for education due to policy and language-related disagreements.
Describing expenditure on government schools as an investment in the State’s future, he said funding education was essential for nurturing future scientists, economists and other professionals, and argued that withholding such funds would adversely affect Tamil Nadu’s long-term development.
