TN: 25 govt school children admitted in hospital reportedly over food poisoning due to rotten eggs served in mid-day meal

Around 25 children of a government school in Cuddalore district, have been admitted to the hospital after they showed symptoms of food poisoning.

There exists a Government Panchayat Union Primary School at Athiyanallur near Chidambaram in Cuddalore District and about 100 students are reporteldy studying here. 

The students who attended the school yesterday (February 25) were given eggs for their lunch. However, the eggs were reportedly rotten and had been cooked as it is. The students who ate it not only vomited but also fainted and fell down.

The teachers immediately called an ambulance and took the children to the Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital in Chidambaram.  There the students are being given intensive treatment. 

This is not the first case of children in Cuddalore district falling victim to food poisoning after having mid day meals in government school.

Earlier in December 2021, 9 students of the Government High School in Vaiyankudi near Thittakudi in Cuddalore district fainted after having the eggs served along with mid-day meals.

In the same month, rotten eggs were found at the Kulithalai Naganur Government School in Karur. In October 2021, A noon meal staff in Coimbatore was suspended for distributing rotten eggs infested with worms.

Just earlier this month, many students at the Perumbalai government high school in Dharmapuri district fell ill after consuming rotten eggs given as part of mid-day meals. Some students who visited the cooking area in the school found that the eggs were rotten with bad stench emanating. They later informed their parents who then protested to dismiss the cook and the mid-day meals organizer.
