Grand Mufti of India and Sunni body head Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar has doubled down on his advocacy of Shariat, saying Islamic law will continue to be proclaimed in Kerala irrespective of opposition, as reported in Deccan Herald.
Speaking at an International Milad Conference in Kozhikode on Saturday night (5 September 2026), Kanthapuram described Shariat as the law of Allah taught by Prophet Muhammad and said those upholding it would continue to speak about it until the Day of Judgment.
“When we speak of Shariat, it is the Shariat of Allah—the Shariat taught by the Messenger,” he said.
He further said that opposition would not prevent the proclamation of Shariat.
“No matter who opposes it, the Shariat of Allah—the Shariat shown by the Prophet—will continue to be proclaimed here,” he said.
Kanthapuram also expressed his desire to organise a Shariat conference in every district of Kerala and called for people to come together and cooperate with the initiative.
“Expressing my hope that all of you will come together and cooperate with it,” he said.
Had Made Regressive Remarks On Women
Kanthapuram’s latest remarks come days after his comments on the public appearance of Muslim women triggered a political and social controversy in Kerala.
He had earlier said that bringing women onto public platforms would lead to “great destruction”. The remarks drew criticism from several prominent figures, including Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, who described the view as an idea belonging to the 19th century.
The controversy also drew wider attention to Kanthapuram’s position on the role and public presence of women.
Following the backlash, Kanthapuram clarified his comments, saying he was not among those who advocated that women should be buried or confined to their homes. He also pointed to the education and opportunities being provided to several women.
However, his subsequent remarks on Shariat indicate that he continues to firmly defend Islamic law and its propagation.
At the Kozhikode conference, Kanthapuram framed Shariat as an Islamic principle that would continue to be upheld despite opposition.
His remarks also went beyond defending Shariat in principle, with the cleric expressing a desire to take the message through dedicated conferences across Kerala.
