A power outage lasting around 10 minutes at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple on Thursday (30 October 2026), while former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami was offering prayers, caused inconvenience to devotees and triggered a political attack on the ruling TVK government, as reported in Hindu Tamil.
Palaniswami had arrived at the Madurai airport by flight from Chennai on Thursday (29 October 2026) morning to attend the Muthuramalinga Thevar Guru Pooja scheduled to be held at Pasumpon on 30 October 2026. After staying at a hotel in Avaniyapuram, he visited the Meenakshi Amman Temple at around 6 PM, accompanied by former ministers Sellur K. Raju and R.B. Udhayakumar, AIADMK functionaries Rajan Chellappa and Raj Sathyan, and other party members.
Around 10 minutes after Palaniswami entered the temple, a power outage occurred. The interruption continued for more than 10 minutes, until he came out of the Swamy shrine, leaving Palaniswami, his accompanying party members and other devotees facing difficulties in offering prayers.
The outage also disrupted the counting of offerings from the temple hundials, which was underway under the supervision of Joint Commissioner K. Chellathurai. Temple authorities immediately switched on the generator to restore the power supply.
After completing his darshan, Palaniswami criticised the TVK government, saying, “Even when people go to a temple to pray to God, there is a power cut. Under the TVK government, people cannot live peacefully, nor can they even pray to God in peace.”
