The Joseph Vijay TVK government may reconsider its proposal to construct a new Secretariat at Pattinapakkam in Chennai following opposition from fishing communities and environmental activists, Junior Vikatan reported on 16 September 2026.
According to the magazine’s “Mr Kazhugu” column, residents of nine fishing villages, including Nochikuppam, have opposed the proposed project. The Communist Party of India has also joined the fishermen in protesting against the plan.
The report said the proposed Secretariat project has triggered concerns among fishing communities over its potential impact on their settlements and livelihood. Environmental activists have also opposed the proposal.
Junior Vikatan further reported that an Intelligence Department note warned the government that proceeding with the project could invite opposition from the fishing community.
Against this backdrop, the Tamil Nadu government is reportedly considering backing away from its plan to establish the new Secretariat at Pattinapakkam, according to the report.
