How Ramanathapuram BJP MLA candidate intervened to release fishermen caught by Sri Lankan Navy

On 25th March, around 40 fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy off the coast of Katchatheevu, the island that was given away to Sri Lanka by the then Congress government at the Centre and DMK government at the State.

The fishermen belonged to Thangachimadam village near Rameshwaram.

A day after the incident, on 26th March, BJP MLA candidate for Ramanathapuram, D. Kuppuramu, visited the village early in the morning. The womenfolk of the village met him and shared their grievance with him. D. Kuppuramu had promised immediate action and took upon himself the responsibility to free the fishermen.

Kuppuramu immediately coordinated with the BJP and reached out to the Ministry of External Affairs. On the same day by the evening, the 40 fishermen were released. The fishermen families who were visibly overwhelmed broke down to tears and wholeheartedly thanked him for his timely intervention.
