Hindu Munnani Slams Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers' Association Over Thirupparankundram Resolution, Seeks Govt Action

Hindu Munnani has strongly criticised the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ and Artists’ Association (Tamil Nadu Murpokku Ezhuthalar Kalaignargal Sangam) over its resolution opposing the Madras High Court’s order permitting the lighting of the traditional Maha Deepam atop the Thirupparankundram hill.

In a statement issued on 8 July 2026, Hindu Munnani questioned whether the Progressive Writers’ Association respected court orders and accused it of adopting a policy of defying the law in the Thirupparankundram issue.

The organisation alleged that, under the banner of a progressive writers’ association, the group was consistently expressing views against Hinduism. It stated that the demand to light the Maha Deepam atop the Thirupparankundram hill reflected the wishes of Murugan devotees belonging to the majority community in Tamil Nadu. According to Hindu Munnani, despite the High Court’s ruling permitting the ritual, the association had passed a resolution at its state executive committee meeting opposing the judgment.

Hindu Munnani further alleged that, in recent months, several organisations had engaged in activities opposing the court’s verdict, including the production of the film Thirupparankundram Files, organising seminars critical of the judgment, and staging protests against the judge who delivered the verdict.

The organisation accused the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ and Artists’ Association of joining these efforts and alleged that its actions were aimed at provoking communal unrest across the state.

Calling for immediate intervention, Hindu Munnani urged the Tamil Nadu government to initiate action against the association over its resolution opposing the High Court’s order.
