The special screening of the documentary Thirupparankundram Files, scheduled to be held at a private preview theatre in Chennai’s Nungambakkam on Tuesday (30 June 2026) evening, was cancelled after Hindu Munnani objected to the event, stating that the film sought to influence an issue currently pending before the courts and hurt the religious sentiments of Murugan devotees.
The documentary reportedly centres on the long-running dispute over the lighting of the Deepam atop the sacred Thirupparankundram Hill, where Hindu devotees have asserted traditional rights over a stone pillar located near a Dargah. The issue remains under judicial consideration.
Ahead of the scheduled 6 p.m. screening at Le Magic Lantern preview theatre, Hindu Munnani submitted a formal complaint to the Nungambakkam Police seeking a ban on the screening.

In the complaint, Hindu Munnani district president R. Munusamy stated that screening a documentary on a matter that is sub judice was inappropriate and amounted to an attempt to influence an ongoing legal dispute. The complaint further alleged that the documentary was against Lord Murugan and would wound the religious sentiments of Murugan devotees, potentially leading to law and order problems.

The organisation requested the police to prevent the screening from taking place.
The screening was reportedly expected to be attended by several public figures, including Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader Tamimun Ansari, actor Sathyaraj and actor-politician Karunas.

Following the complaint, police personnel were deployed outside the venue amid reports that Hindu Munnani cadres were preparing to stage a protest.

Subsequently, the theatre management informed the organisers that it would not be able to host the screening, citing concerns that proceeding with the event could result in law and order issues. The organisers later announced that the special screening had been postponed.
Islamists & Dravidianists Break Bangles
Speaking to reporters after the screening was cancelled, MLAs Tamimun Ansari and Karunas alleged that Thirupparankundram Files was produced by people who believe in democratic values with the objective of promoting communal harmony among Hindus, Muslims and Christians, and questioned why it was facing obstacles in Tamil Nadu while films such as Kashmir Files and Kerala Files, which they claimed were divisive, had been allowed to be screened.
They further questioned how a group of around 20 people could allegedly stop the screening, asserted that any objections to the documentary should be pursued through legal means rather than disruption, and urged Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to intervene and ensure a safe environment for the documentary’s release within the next two weeks.
