Prolonged and recurring power outages across several parts of Chennai have triggered protests, road blockades, and confrontations with electricity department officials, as residents complained of inadequate response from Electricity Board authorities and a lack of communication regarding restoration efforts.
In Mangadu, residents reportedly besieged a substation office around midnight to protest against frequent power disruptions that they said had become a recurring problem in the area. Videos from the protest showed residents confronting officials and demanding answers over the repeated outages.
Residents questioned why elected representatives and officials were not directly addressing public concerns regarding the power supply situation. Some protesters reportedly argued that authorities appeared unconcerned about the daily disruptions and accused officials of failing to provide clear explanations regarding the outages.
During the protest, residents challenged officials who attempted to address them from within the office premises, insisting that they come outside and engage directly with the public. Protesters also questioned the authority of individuals speaking on behalf of the department and demanded accountability for the recurring disruptions.

Meanwhile, residents in the Madipakkam South area reported that power had remained unavailable for more than an hour and alleged that repeated attempts to contact Electricity Board officials had failed.
According to residents, calls made to the Assistant Engineer’s mobile phone went unanswered despite multiple attempts. They stated that the prolonged outage had created severe hardship for families, particularly those with infants, elderly persons, and patients.
Residents said that some families had resorted to keeping their children inside air-conditioned vehicles to escape the heat, while many others were forced to wait outside their homes because of the lack of ventilation and electricity.
They also expressed concern over what they described as a complete absence of communication from Electricity Board officials. Residents maintained that they were entitled to receive information regarding the cause of the outage and the expected timeline for restoration.

Similar complaints emerged from the Ambattur area, where residents reported power outages lasting several hours. The disruption reportedly led to protests outside an electricity office and a road blockade that affected traffic movement for several hours.
Residents in Medavakkam also complained of recurring night-time power cuts that they said had persisted for more than 15 days. Allegations were raised that officials were frequently unavailable at their offices during periods of disruption.
One resident alleged that electricity supply had failed at around 10 p.m. and was restored only after midnight. The resident further claimed that power was restored only after media personnel arrived at the scene.
Residents stated that they had waited outside the Electricity Board office for nearly two hours without receiving any response from officials. According to those present, no staff members were available at the office during the outage despite repeated attempts by the public to seek assistance.
Several residents questioned whether there should not be at least one official available to respond to emergencies and public grievances during such situations. They alleged that calls made to department officials went unanswered and expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of accountability.
Residents further stated that they had contacted the Assistant Engineer between 10 and 15 times without receiving a response. According to them, none of the calls were attended to, and no explanation was provided regarding the disruption.

Some residents alleged that while electricity supply had generally been stable in the past, the situation had deteriorated significantly over the previous two weeks, with repeated night-time outages becoming a regular occurrence.
