Bihar & UP People Eat Chapati Kuruma At Amma Unavagam At TN Tax Payer’s Expense: DMK’s RS Bharathi

"All Those From Bihar & UP Eat Chapati Kuruma At Amma Unavagam At TN Tax Payer's Expense", Says DMK's RS Bharathi

During a party meeting in Chennai, DMK Organization Secretary RS Bharathi questioned the relevance of Amma Unavagam, the late Jayalalithaa’s pet project. He asked about the need for a low-cost meal scheme after her death and accused AIADMK leaders of exploiting it.

He also claimed that only the north Indian workers benefited from Amma Unavagam on Tamil Nadu taxpayers’ money.

During his speech, Bharathi criticized AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), dismissing claims that the DMK government had closed Amma Unavagam. He said, “Amma (Jayalalithaa) herself has left (died), then what is the need for Amma Unavagam? Edappadi and his gang ate idli and dosa for one and a half crore rupees while Amma (Jayalalithaa) was in the hospital. Now they are acting like the DMK has shut down Amma Unavagam, where just about 150 people eat daily,” Bharathi remarked.

Bharathi also attacked the Jayalalithaa government’s management of Amma Unavagam, alleging that “wasted food” was served there. He said, “The Jayalalithaa government served leftover food in Amma Unavagam. The chapati and kuruma served at night in Amma Unavagam are consumed by people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. We spend our tax money and feed him,” said RS Bharathi.

This is not the first time RS Bharathi has targeted Hindi speakers, people from north of India, ADMK members, especially EPS and Jayalalithaa, or even the TN Governor.

At an event commemorating the 100th anniversary celebrations of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch Karunanidhi, Bharathi said, “What is the governor doing? He just wants to create problems for the ruling government. We have seen so many governors, but this governor creates a fuss and drags us into a fight. He refuses to sign the bills we send. I addressed a gathering about what happened to him in Nagaland; they chased him away. Don’t mistake me; I am just quoting an example. The people of Nagaland eat dog meat. If someone who eats dog meat themselves has so much self-respect that they chased away this governor, then imagine how much self-respect Tamils, who consume food with salt, would have. The day he was chased away, the people of Nagaland celebrated it like Deepavali.”

In another instance, at a meeting (in an undated video), Bharathi ridiculed north Indian labourers and said, “The reason why Tamil Nadu is the best state in India is because of the DMK. The people in the other states are fools; they have no brains. These north Indians, I am saying this openly.”

Insulting EPS

During an event in Ambattur, Chennai, in 2021, DMK leader RS Bharathi made derogatory remarks about the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Edappadi Palaniswami. He said“He has forgotten with whose help this dog, this man sat on the CM’s chair. Those who kick the ladder they used to climb up have never met a good end. I would say even MGR is also like that. MGR was nurtured and made into a leader by this movement. But you know what happened when he betrayed. He passed away without being able to speak.”.

Making Derogatory Remarks On Jayalalithaa

He also made disrespectful comments about J. Jayalalithaa, implying that he was responsible for sending her to jail in the TANSI case, and even suggested speaking to her from her memorial. He said, “Go wake her up from the samadhi [memorial] and ask”. He added, “Recently, Jayalalithaa’s memorial hall opened on January 27. They gave ₹40,000 per bus from all over Tamil Nadu and gave ₹2000 to those who boarded the bus. Also, they picked them up and dropped them off at Marina Beach. Edappadi and OPS thought the crowd would come to the Jayalalithaa memorial. But the crowd thought, instead of visiting that ‘moodhevi’ (a derogatory slang in Tamil), they visited Kalaignar’s [Karunanidhi’s] memorial”.

Governor Also Like Bihari Panipuri Sellers

In January 2023, at a public meeting, he compared the Governor to a migrant worker from Bihar. He said that he would not have left without being beaten had Jayalalitha been alive. “I had earlier stated that those who sell Soan papdi and Panipuri don`t know the pride of Tamil Nadu. I learned that many have come from Bihar and the Governor (RN Ravi) has similarly come by train,”.

Amma Unavagam

The Amma Unavagam scheme, launched by Jayalalithaa in 2013, provides affordable meals to the poor across Tamil Nadu. The project, which still operates under the DMK government, offers idli for ₹1, pongal for ₹5, variety rice for ₹5, curd rice for ₹3, and two chapatis for ₹3, among other low-cost meals. Currently, 650 Amma Unavagam operate statewide, with 407 located in Chennai alone.

Tirunelveli: Brahmin Youth’s Sacred Thread Cut By 4 Unidentified Men, TN BJP Leader Narayanan Thirupathy & THAMBRAAS Condemn Act

Police are investigating a shocking attack on a young Brahmin boy, Akhilesh (12), who was assaulted by four men on a two-wheeler while on his way to attend a spiritual programme in Thiagaraja Nagar. The incident occurred on Sunday, 22 September 2024, around 4:30 PM, when Akhilesh was walking shirtless from TVS Nagar Street to participate in a bhajan organized by the Asthika Samajam Trust. The attackers pulled Akhilesh’s janeu/poonool/sacred thread, cut it, and threatened him before fleeing the scene.

A complaint was lodged at the Perumalpuram police station, and an investigation led by Assistant Commissioner Vijayakumar is underway. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the Sivandipatti Road area to identify the suspects involved in the attack. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, particularly from political and religious leaders.

Tamil Nadu Brahmin Association Condemns Incident

The Tamil Nadu Brahmin Association (THAMBRAAS) issued a statement condemning the attack on Akhilesh and the cutting of his sacred thread. The association urged the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate action against the assailants, calling the act an assault on religious freedom and personal belief. THAMBRAAS assured the Brahmin community that such attacks would not intimidate them and vowed to face them with courage.

THAMBRAAS further criticized the growing trend of anti-Brahmin rhetoric, citing recent political statements made at public events. The association called on the government to uphold the principles of secularism and ensure that no community is targeted or marginalized based on their religious or cultural practices.

TN BJP Leader Condemns Attack

Tamil Nadu BJP Vice President Narayanan Thirupathy strongly condemned the attack, and the threats made against Akhilesh. Thirupathy took to social media, calling on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to take swift action against the perpetrators. “It is the duty and responsibility of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who claims ‘I am the Chief Minister for all‘, to order the arrest of those evil forces who attacked the young boy and render justice,” he said.

Thirupathy expressed outrage over the attack, emphasizing the religious significance of wearing the sacred thread (poonul or janeu) in Hinduism. He clarified that the sacred thread is worn not only by Brahmins but also by various other communities such as Chettiars, Ayravaisiyas, goldsmiths, carpenters, and sculptors, as a symbol of worship and personal belief. Thirupathy also criticized what he described as the “height of stupidity” behind the attack, which he linked to historical misconceptions and political motives, calling out political groups like the Justice Party, Dravidar Kazhagam, and DMK for perpetuating such ideas.

Allegations Of Political Instigation

The incident has been linked to recent remarks made by Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Water Resources, Duraimurugan, at a DMK event. Narayanan Thirupathy suggested that his comments about the Brahmin community may have emboldened anti-social elements to carry out the attack.

Despite the outrage, no major political party, apart from the BJP, has issued a statement condemning the attack. Thirupathy criticized the silence of other political leaders, suggesting that Brahmins are often overlooked in Tamil Nadu politics due to their relatively small voter base and perceived lack of caste-based voting patterns.

The police investigation into the attack on Akhilesh is ongoing, with efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects using CCTV footage. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and raised concerns about rising caste-based violence and the politicization of religious symbols in Tamil Nadu.

“Seizing” Raja Becomes Third Gangster To Be Killed In Encounter By Chennai Police In TN BSP Chief Armstrong Murder Case

"Seizing" Raja Becomes Third Gangster To Be Killed In Encounter By Chennai Police In TN BSP Chief Armstrong Murder Case

In a police encounter in Chennai on 22 September 2024,SeizingRaja, a gangster wanted for the murder of Tamil Nadu Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief K. Armstrong, was shot dead. This is the third encounter related to Armstrong’s murder since A Arun took over as Chennai Police Commissioner on 8 July 2024.

‘SeizingRaja was arrested by police in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district on Sunday (22 September 2024) and brought to Chennai for questioning. He was taken to the Neelankarai area to help locate hidden weapons. According to police, Raja allegedly fired at the officers, leading them to respond by shooting him twice in the chest and stomach. He was transported to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead, and his body has since been moved to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Seizing Raja had 33 pending cases, including five for murder, and had been detained under the Goondas Act five times. His wife, however, denied any involvement in Armstrong’s murder, claiming that her husband had not engaged in criminal activities for the past two years. She also expressed fears of afake encounter, stating that she had all the proof of his alibi for the Armstrong murder case.

Third Encounter Since Arun Took Over As Chennai Police Commissioner

This is the third encounter since A. Arun assumed office as Chennai’s Police Commissioner. The first occurred on 14 July 2024 when K. Thiruvengadam, another suspect in Armstrong’s murder, was killed by police in Madhavaram. The second, on 18 September 2024, involvedKakka Thoppu’ Balaji, a notorious gangster wanted in over 50 cases, who was shot dead in Vyasarpadi after reportedly attacking police officers.

Armstrong Murder Case

K Armstrong, the Tamil Nadu state unit president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), was brutally murdered on 5 July 2024 evening near Perambur in Chennai. He was attacked by a gang of six assailants while chatting with friends and supporters near his residence. The attackers, armed with machetes and sickles, threatened anyone who tried to intervene, causing Armstrong’s friends to flee. His family rushed to the scene upon hearing his cries, only to find him grievously wounded and lying in a pool of blood. He was quickly taken to a nearby private hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Armstrong, a practicing advocate and councillor for Greater Chennai Corporation, championed the marginalized sections of society. Despite facing numerous criminal cases filed by the state police, he earned a strong reputation among Dalits for his contributions to their socioeconomic development. Armstrong’s popularity surged after he highlighted the welfare of Dalits in subaltern Chennai. He unsuccessfully contested against Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin in the 2011 Assembly polls. His advocacy for Dalit rights made him a target for non-Dravidian parties critical of his stance against atrocities committed against Dalits.

Raja’s body is currently at the Royapettah Government Hospital, where police security has been heightened.

Rabid Anti-Hindu Pastor, Ezra Sargunam, Who Called For Punching Hindus In The Face Dies

Rabid Anti-Hindu Pastor, Ezra Sargunam, Who Called For Punching Hindus In The Face Dies

Ezra Sargunam, the rabid Christian fundamentalist and anti-Hindu, passed away at the age of 86 following a prolonged illness in Chennai. Under his leadership, the Evangelical Church of India (ECI), which began in 1954, saw significant growth. Sargunam, who maintained a notable presence in political circles, often was involved in controversies. He had set a goal to establish 1,000 churches by 2000, a milestone he reached by 1997.

Ezra Sargunam, a Christian evangelist and bishop with solid ties to the DMK, is widely recognized for his controversial speeches against Hindus. Here is a quick look at his anti-Hindu speeches from the past.

In 2018, Ezra Sargunam urged the SDPI, a radical Islamic organization, to take aggressive action against Hindus who were challenging them, particularly following the murder of PMK member Ramalingam, who had opposed Islamic conversions. He also pledged his support to Vaiko, Thirumavalavan, and M.K. Stalin if they pursued this course of action.

He claimed that the Hindu religion did not exist and provoked Christians to punch Hindus in the face and make them bleed if they refused to acknowledge thetruth‘.

At another event in the presence of members from the DMK, Ezra Sargunam derided Prime Minister Modi. He said Whatever we are speaking here, it should echo in Delhi. It should fall in the ears of Modi. He is not going to change his mind anyway. He is a man who has come to loot the country and is doing his job correctly. His duty is to support the four rich men. He doesn’t care about the poor. But he will keep sayingI was born poor, I sold tea, I am living my life for the poor’. But friends, he keeps doing exactly the opposite.”.

He further said Anybody with an iota of fear for God will not go against his conscience. That fellow, though he keeps talking about God is not God fearing! Neither does he fear people. Only if a man had lived with his wife at least for 5 days would he know the difficulties of everyday life.”

Asking others on the stage to not mistake him, Ezra Sargunam also said, Can’t you live with your wife after marriage even for a week?! What merits do you have to rule this country? This fake man… We will be facing difficulties like these until this Modi is removed. He doesn’t know any difficulties. Only if he had raised children would he know the difficulties! We don’t even know with whom he lived! We are now stuck with him. Let us all pray to destroy him.”

These remarks were made in the presence of DMK leader M.K. Stalin and other opposition figures.

These are just some of the documented instances of the anti-Hindu Ezra Sargunam.

NCPCR Holds Meeting With Google, Social Media Platforms To Discuss Safety Measures For Children

NCPCR Holds Meeting With Google, Social Media Platforms To Discuss Safety Measures For Children

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has held a meeting with Google and social media platforms like Meta, X, Snapchat etc., to discuss issues related to protection of rights and safety of children, along with several other issues. In a statement, the NCPCR said that it has recently convened a meeting with Google and social media platforms — YouTube, Meta (Facebook, Instagram & WhatsApp), X, Snapchat, ShareChat, Reddit, and Bumble — to deliberate upon a host of issues like mechanisms for age verification, safety tools used by the sites, among others.

During the meeting, mechanisms for detecting and reporting Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and methods for restriction and blocking of CSAM were also discussed. There were also discussions on support (by the social media platforms) towards the law enforcement agencies, tools adopted for identifying deep fakes and tracing predators, and measures for protecting the victims as well as their privacy. The statement mentioned that the talks also focussed on parameters for reporting (matters of concern) to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and measures to protect children from explicit content on social media.

The statement further mentioned that during the meeting, a consensus was reached between the social media platforms and NCPCR on several key points. “For the safety and security of children on platforms, the social media platforms must follow robust Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures and Section 9 of Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which is an Act passed by Parliament, and we all have to maintain its sanctity,” it read. Deliberations were also held on the mandatory reporting of CSAM.

“Pursuant to the provisions of Section 19 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, online platforms must be legally obligated to report instances of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) directly to local law enforcement authorities,” the statement read. Besides, it was also stressed that social media platforms should be permitted to enter contracts with minors only upon obtaining explicit consent from their parents or legal guardians, and the platforms must display disclaimers in English, Hindi and local/regional languages before showing any adult content. “These disclaimers should warn parents that they may be held liable if a child views adult content under the aforementioned legal provisions,” the statement noted.

“Furthermore, social media platforms are requested to provide data on the total number of cases submitted to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children for the period of January 2024 to June 2024. This data should include categories of image or video hashes (unique digital fingerprints), content details (e.g., child pornography, child exploitation), time-stamped logs, metadata, and any other relevant information shared. It is requested to ensure the implementation of the above recommendations and to submit an Action Taken Report to the Commission within 7 days of the issue of this letter,” the NCPCR statement read.

Telangana: BRS Disputes Congress Govt’s Claim Over Singareni Bonus

Telangana: BRS Disputes Congress Govt's Claim Over Singareni Bonus

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K. T. Rama Rao on Sunday accused the Congress government in Telangana of betraying the employees of state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited over a bonus. He told media persons that what the Congress government has announced for Singareni employees is not a bonus but ‘bogus’.

Disputing the claim of the state government that it is paying 33 per cent bonus to Singareni workers, Rama Rao claimed that the government will be paying them only 16. 9 per cent bonus. Referring to the government’s announcement that each employee will be paid Rs 1.9 lakh as bonus, the BRS leader said that this is just 16.9 per cent of the profit and not 33 per cent as claimed. He added that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka should clarify because 33 per cent bonus works out to Rs 3.7 lakh per employee.

“If the government is serious on the issue of welfare of Singareni employees, it should pay what it is promising. It should pay Rs 3.7 lakh for every employee and not Rs 1.9 lakh,” he said and alleged that every employee is suffering a loss of Rs 1.8 lakh. KTR, as the BRS leader is popularly known, said that 33 per cent of the total profit of Rs 4,701 crore during 2023-24 works out to Rs 1,551 crore but the Congress government is disbursing only Rs 796 crore as bonus. He claimed that the BRS government acted with sincerity over the issue of bonus to Singareni employees during the last 10 years.

Rao said despite Covid-19, the BRS government delivered Rs 2,780 crore of profit share to the workers of Singareni while during the earlier 10 years of Congress rule the employees received Rs 365 crore as bonus.

He asked the government to stop spreading lies that it is paying 33 per cent of profit as bonus. In united Andhra Pradesh, Singareni workers did not get more than 10-15 per cent share in profit as bonus. The BRS leader claimed that Singareni achieved tremendous progress during the 10 years of BRS rule. The company’s performance was improved and this resulted in a huge jump in profits. During the BRS rule Singareni workers were paid 32 per cent profit as bonus. KTR said when BRS came to power, each worker was getting only Rs 17,000 as bonus but in the last year of its government, it paid Rs 1.7 lakh as bonus to every employee.

He sarcastically asked if this was the gift from the Congress for Singareni employees for electing all its party candidates in the Singareni mines area during Assembly elections last year and Congress affiliated union in the trade union elections. KTR said that the BRS had cautioned Singareni workers and alleged that the Congress government had undermined all their rights. He added that the BRS had also warned Singareni employees that Congress and BJP together would privatise Singareni and claimed that the two parties together conducted the auction of Singareni mines. KTR said BJP’s Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka were seen smiling while participating in the auction.

Killing Of Fishermen In Sea Stopped After Modi Govt Assumed Office: Union Minister L Murugan

Killing Of Fishermen In Sea Stopped After Modi Govt Assumed Office: Union Minister L Murugan

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan said that after Narendra Modi assumed office, reports of fishermen being killed in Palk Bay — a water body between the coasts of India and Sri Lanka — have stopped. The Union Minister while interacting with media persons at Tirunelveli on Sunday said that whenever any incident of fishermen being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy comes out, the Ministry of External Affairs acts immediately and ensure that fishermen are brought back with immediate effect.

Murugan said that when the UPA was in power, fishermen from Tamil Nadu were shot dead for poaching. He said that this was not the scene at present and added that fishermen shall be protected and that the Modi government was fully aware of the livelihood issues. He also said that fishermen were being encouraged to take up alternatives such as deep-sea fishing. Murugan further said that fishermen need to contribute only 10 per cent and that the rest comes in the way of subsidies and loans. Deep sea fishing not only helps fishers earn more revenue, but it is also safe and secure, the Union Minister said. He also said that the value addition of fishing produce is being taught to the fishermen.

Murugan said that already, many fishermen in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari had opted for a change. The Minister said that the Palk Bay fishermen are being given gadgets, which would alert them and help avoid charges levelled by the Sri Lankan Navy that the fishermen had crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Murugan said that the Union government has been taking proactive measures which would solve the problem in a permanent manner. He said the Tamil Nadu BJP unit has a target of enrolling 1 crore new members into the party fold before October 15, 2024.

The Union Minister also said that in Tamil Nadu, the BJP has improved its poll percentage. Murugan mentioned that the occupants of the Scheduled Caste (SC) hostels have been undergoing terrible experiences and said that if the Minister concerned or the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had visited any SC hostel, their condition would not be pathetic. The Union Minister said, “First let the DMK government give some respect to the SCs and then attack the BJP of being anti-SC.”

Leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake Set To Redefine Sri Lanka’s Presidency

Leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake Set To Redefine Sri Lanka's Presidency

Sri Lanka’s Marxist-leaning leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party will be sworn in as the country’s ninth—and also the first Leftist—president on Monday, following his triumph in the island nation’s first presidential election since its worst-ever economic crisis.

The result was decided Sunday evening after Sri Lanka‘s first-ever presidential run-off with the counting of second preference votes following both Dissanayake and Samagi Jana Sandhanaya candidate Sajith Premadasa failing to get the required percentage of votes. “The dream we have nurtured for centuries is finally coming true. This achievement is not the result of any single person’s work, but the collective effort of hundreds of thousands of you. Your commitment has brought us this far, and for that, I am deeply grateful. This victory belongs to all of us,” 55-year-old Dissanayake, also popularly known as AKD, said in a post on X after the final result was announced by the Lankan Election Commission post 7 PM Sunday.

According to Sri Lanka’s Election Commission, Dissanayake won the presidency with 42.31 per cent of the vote with Premadasa finishing second and incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was eliminated after the first round, in third position. “Our journey here has been paved by the sacrifices of so many who gave their sweat, tears, and even their lives for this cause. Their sacrifices are not forgotten. We hold the scepter of their hopes and struggles, knowing the responsibility it carries. The millions of eyes filled with hope and expectation push us forward, and together, we stand ready to rewrite Sri Lankan history,” the Presidential race winner mentioned.

The new President is expected to take oath in a ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat on Monday. “This dream can only be realized with a fresh start. The unity of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and all Sri Lankans is the bedrock of this new beginning. The New Renaissance we seek will rise from this shared strength and vision. Let us join hands and shape this future together!” said Dissanayake. The leader has been a key figure in Sri Lanka’s political discourse for some time now.

The election, held on Saturday, saw Dissanayake lead over veteran political figures such as incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition leader Premadasa. JVP’s manifesto, ‘A Thriving Nation, A Beautiful Life’, focused on several areas, including addressing corruption-related matters, establishing a new National Development Bank and re-negotiating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to alleviate the hardships of the poor. It also mentioned driving growth in sectors such as natural resources, professional and skilled labour resources, mineral resources, information technology, tourism, agriculture, marine resources, and creative industries.

During his election campaign, Dissanayake spoke about involving all citizens in the process, from creating a strong economy to distributing its benefits. The 230-page manifesto outlined the party’s policy statement in four main sections, titled ‘A perfect life – a comfortable country’; ‘A dignified life – a safe country’; ‘A modern life – a rich country’; and ‘A proud life – a steadfast country’. It also included key points like forming a new constitution, an efficient health service focused on disease prevention to promote the health and fitness of citizens, elimination of duty-free vehicle permits for Members of Parliament (MPs), changes to the tax system, universal pension coverage, capping ministerial positions at 25, maximising the use of mass media, and fostering a free media industry.

Born on November 24, 1968 in the village of Thambuththegama, Anuradhapura District, Dissanayake’s early life was modest – his father was a labourer, and mother a housewife. He became the first student from Thambuththegama Central College to gain university entrance, initially attending the University of Peradeniya before transferring to the University of Kelaniya, where he earned a degree in Physical Science in 1995. Dissanayake’s political career began in 1987 when he joined the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, a Marxist party, during the 1987-1989 JVP insurrection.

Over the years, he rose through the party ranks, becoming its national organiser in 1995 and joining the central working committee. He was elected to Parliament in 2000 through the JVP’s national list and re-elected in 2001. By 2004, the JVP had allied with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), forming the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA). Dissanayake was elected to Parliament from Kurunegala District and was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation in the joint SLFP-JVP government.

He resigned in 2005, along with other JVP ministers, over disagreements with former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s government regarding tsunami relief coordination with the LTTE. In 2014, Dissanayake succeeded Somawansa Amarasinghe as leader of the JVP. In 2019, under his leadership, the JVP formed the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance with Dissanayake, who ran for president, finishing third with three percent of the vote share. According to some media reports, Dissanayake’s influence grew significantly during the 2022 economic crisis, which led to widespread shortages and soaring inflation. His NPP alliance and the JVP played a prominent role in the mass protest movement known as the ‘Aragalaya’ (Struggle), which culminated in former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation.

Though no single party officially led the protests, the JVP’s involvement was widely reported. Dissanayake has been vocal about the movement’s partial success, criticising the lack of parliamentary dissolution and accusing the political elite of maintaining the same corrupt structures. “Looting, corruption and defying court orders continue to happen even today. The Aragalaya achieved only half a victory as Parliament was not dissolved. So, we hope the other half can be achieved in this presidential election,” he said, responding to questions about his party’s involvement in the movement in an interview with Daily Mirror. He has also faced allegations that some foreign countries, particularly China, are backing his campaign.

However, he firmly denied these claims in the interview, stating that the respective government funded his visits to China, but no foreign funds had been funnelled into his campaign. “We are a small force, but any country or organisation cannot buy us over,” he said, adding that the accusations were spread by leaders who themselves had been compromised. Dissanayake now stands on the cusp of making history as the country’s first leftist President, heralding what could be a significant political shift for the South Asian island nation.

Chess Olympiad: India Script History With Two Gold Medals

Chess Olympiad: India Script History With Two Gold Medals

In a historic triumph, India’s men’s and women’s teams clinched gold medals for the first time in the 45th Chess Olympiad on Sunday. Led by the stellar performances of D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi, the Indian men’s team secured the gold medal after a thrilling final-round victory over Slovenia in Budapest.

The decisive match against Slovenia saw Arjun Erigaisi emerging victorious over Jan Subelj, while Gukesh defeated Vladimir Fedoseev. India needed just one more point to clinch the title, which Gukesh delivered. This victory capped off an impressive tournament for the Indian team, which had previously won bronze medals in the 2014 and 2022 editions. “It was crazy. He surprised me in the opening with his move order, and we reached an initially equal position. His problems started from Ne7. “Arjun was completely winning, so I thought even a draw would be fine, but I kept finding all the good moves. I am glad, but the main thing was to perform as a team!,” said Gukesh D on the FIDE broadcast.

The Indian squad showcased exceptional form throughout the competition, winning eight consecutive matches before being held to a draw by the defending champions, Uzbekistan. However, they bounced back strongly, defeating the top-seeded USA in the penultimate round.
