Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh turns political liability for Shiv Sena, may resign

Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh

Amid strong rumours that Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh might resign from his post, the controversial police officer met with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. This comes after the fallout of the arrest of encounter specialist Sachin Waze by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) over its probe into the recovery of an explosives-laden SUV near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house.

Singh met Thackeray at his official residence ”Varsha” in Mumbai on Tuesday (16 March) night. There are also reports that in the meeting held on Monday (15 March) between Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, they discussed Singh’s dismissal, as he has now become a political liability.

As per reports published in OpIndia, Vaze reportedly revealed to NIA that top Shiv Sena leaders were involved in planting the bomb outside Mukesh Ambani’s house “Antilia”. The politicians who used the Mumbai police commissioner for their own agenda have seemingly thrown Singh under the bus and have accused him of “running his own agenda and not giving priority to politically sensitive cases, like the fake TRP scam”.

Indian authorities are exploring for uranium reserves at a distance of three kilometres from the India-China border in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, reports Economic Times. The exploration was taken up in Aalo of West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, at a height of 619 meters from the ground level.

Speaking on the sidelines of a one-day seminar on ‘radiation and environment’ organised by the Indian Nuclear Society, D K Sinha, director, Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) said that the exploration for uranium had yielded positive results and further activity would continue, which would also result in mining.

“We have got the required encouragement from the Centre and have taken up the exploration. There was no possibility to do heliborne exploration because of the hills. But we walked all the way up the hills to begin the exploration,” Sinha said in Hyderabad on Monday.

Sinha added that he went to the farthest village in the Indian side of the border, Mechuka valley.

Uranium is used for producing nuclear energy, which is considered a “clean energy”. Exploration for uranium has also been taken up in the nation’s other states as well. Efforts are also being made for uranium exploration in Himachal Pradesh, while locals in Manipur have also given their nod for exploration. Work is also going in Assam, Nagaland, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.

“Accessibility is one reason why exploration has been taken up in Arunachal Pradesh. Secondly, the political situation has made it more conducive to take up such activity for uranium exploration,” chairman and chief executive of Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) Dinesh Srivastava said.

Srivastava also said that NFC Kota was working to produce nuclear fuel bundles used for generating nuclear power. An amount of ₹4,200 crore was sanctioned by the Centre for the project. He stated that the project would be commissioned by the end of 2022. “We are self-sufficient in terms of fuel, technology, capacity for our nuclear power plants. In fact, we can also export if it is required,” Srivastava said. “Our quality is the best available in the world,” he said.

Lithium prospecting also gaining ground

“In Jharkhand we were exploring uranium, but also detected gold. Many other precious metals are found when we carry out exploration,” Sinha said.

Sinha added that exploration of lithium reserves is also gaining significance.

Lithium is a key element for new technologies and has applications in ceramics, glass, telecommunication and aerospace industries. The well-known uses of lithium are in lithium-ion batteries, lubricating grease, high energy additives to rocket propellants, optical modulators for mobile phones and as a converter to tritium used as a raw material for thermonuclear reactions i.e. fusion.

Preliminary surveys have shown the presence of lithium deposits in Karnataka’s Mandya district.

The Karnataka State Wakf Board has issued a circular restricting the use of loudspeakers in the state’s mosques and dargahs between 10 PM and 6 AM.

In a circular dated March 9, 2021, the board cited the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, and said that loudspeakers used during daytime shall adhere to ambient air quality standards in respect of noise. The circular was issued by the board’s Chief Executive Officer to the managements of the mosques and dargahs in the state.

The managements were instructed to use loudspeakers only for azan and important announcements such as death, timing of burial, and sighting of the moon, during daytime.

The circular added that owing to the increasing use of loudspeakers, generators and public address systems, the increasing ambient noise level around several mosques and dargahs has an ill-effect on the health and psychological well-being of people.

The circular noted that it was “heartening” that a few of the mosques were adhering to the rules scrupulously. It stated that “paramount importance” is attached by Islam to harmonious and sustainable protection of natural environment.

Congregational namaz, Friday sermons, religious, and socio-cultural and knowledge-based functions shall be held with speakers installed on the religious premises. Noise governing apparatus may be installed in the institution in consultation with local environment officers. No sound-emitting fire-crackers shall be burnt in or around the mosque or dargah, the circular added.

The circular also asked the managements to discourage beggary on the premises and instead organise counselling or philanthropic measures.

The issue concerning the use of loudspeakers by mosques has been raised several times over the past years across the country. Last year, the Mumbai police had issued a notice to a woman for requesting neighbouring mosque authorities to lower the volume of the loudspeaker that blared the azan. The woman, identified as Karishma Bhosale, had visited a nearby mosque to convince the authorities to lower the volume of the azan that blared through a loudspeaker installed right in front of her window. Instead, she was heckled by the mosque authorities and was issued a notice by the police.

Rajnath Singh: Will keep our promise on Uniform Civil Code

Union minister for defence and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rajnath Singh on Monday (15 March) said that the party is committed to fulfilling its promise on the Uniform Civil Code just as in the case of Ram Mandir, Article 370 and Triple Talaq issue, reports Times of India.

Singh said, “Whenever we talked of Ram Mandir, people poked fun at us and said we did not have any other issue to talk about. We fulfilled our promise on Article 370 and Triple Talaq. We will do what we have said about common civil code also.”

He categorically stated that the common civil code would not be against any faith or religion. “It will not be against Hindus, Muslims or Christians.” Our politics is about humans and humanity, ”he said.

Singh was categorical when said that if the BJP did not deliver on its promises, it will lead to a trust deficit with the people and said, “The Ram Janmabhoomi movement brought a turnaround for the BJP because the party won people’s trust. They started believing that BJP could also form the Government.”

Singh was speaking at BJP’s state executive committee meeting in Lucknow, where he said, “When Atalji was president of Jan Sangh, nobody could imagine that we would form a Government. We have the slogan ‘chappa chappa bhajapa’. Today that slogan has become a reality.”

“We are not 3.5%, we are 35% of the population”: Christian preacher in TN

A video going viral on social media shows a pastor aggressively proclaiming that those who convert to Christianity and do not identify themselves as Christians should come forward and openly identify themselves as Christians.

In the video, a pastor speaks passionately about his religion, saying ‘throw away all privileges and jobs and come out and declare yourself a Christian. As the government says, 3.5% of the total population are Christians in India. The truth is, we are 35% of the total population’. This video is becoming viral on social media.

It is to be noted that Christian and Muslim organizations have come together to declare in all public meetings that those who support their religion should vote for those who serve Muslim and Christian interests (respectively).

Earlier in February, a Christian pastor and a self-proclaimed ‘Bishop’ named Godfrey Noble said that government records won’t give the actual Christian population and emphasized that 35% of the population (2.75 crore voters) are Christians.

Alena Wicker, a young woman from the United States, has made headlines after she got selected to be a part of NASA, all of 16 years old. Alena, from the state of Arizona in the United States, has already completed her entire high school through homeschooling. She is also set to begin her college education at Arizona State University later this year.

The 12-year-old is confident she will be working at NASA by the time she is 16 years old. Currently, she plans to study astronomy,  planetary science and chemistry. In a video she posted online, she said, “I will fly one of those future spaceships by the time I graduate from college. It doesn’t matter what your age or what you plan to do. Dream for it and then accomplish it.” Alena said she was inspired by NASA after seeing NASA’s rover land on Mars after perseverance recently.

Alina’s ability to learn things quickly was first noticed by her mother, Daphne McCarter. After noticing that her daughter learned the whole school curriculum quickly, she realised that her daughter was a prodigy. “At the age of 4, Alena told me I was going to work for NASA and I was going to go there. Alina would point to the stars. She naturally had the ability for numbers and logos and science. So I started to develop that skill,” Daphne said.

Now, 12-year-old Alena plans to start a podcast to create her profile for a NASA job with a college course. Michael Gurney holds the record for the youngest person to graduate from college. It is noteworthy that he was just 10 years old when he received his bachelor’s degree in anthropology.

“Strict action to be taken against officials if manual scavengers die inside the sewage tunnel”: Madras HC

The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a criminal case against the corporation commissioners involved in the deaths while cleaning the sewers and clarified that arrests will be made.

In Tamil Nadu, a case was filed in the Madras High Court seeking an injunction restraining people from descending on sewers and septic tanks and providing adequate compensation to workers who died due to poisonous gas during the cleaning process. The last time the case came up for hearing, local bodies were ordered to report on whether the work of hiring people to clean the sewers was being done by contractors.

When the case came up for hearing again on Tuesday in a session chaired by Chief Justice Sanjeev Banerjee, the Tamil Nadu government said it had sought details from various corporations and municipalities and should be given an opportunity to compile the details and file a report.

The petitioner contended that no charges have been filed in the incidents and cases related to the victim of poison gas attack while cleaning the sewers and no compensation has been paid to many of the relatives of the victims. Further, an additional petition was filed on behalf of the petitioner stating that as of February 2021, six deaths had occurred. The judges, who were dissatisfied with the government’s failure to file a report, said the case had been pending since 2017, and that the inhumane practice of men going down and cleaning sewers should be stopped.

The judges said it was time for the corporation and the municipal commissioners to be held accountable for the deaths caused by human involvement in sewers and septic tanks. The commissioners also ordered the government to clarify. The judges also adjourned the hearing for three weeks, ordering the secretary of the municipal administration and drinking water supply department to file a report on the steps taken to stop the practice of landing people in the sewers and to expedite the investigation of cases related to deaths.

Further, the judges ordered to ensure that the relatives of the victim workers were given proper compensation and to file a report to that effect.

India now part of select group of nations having nuclear missile tracking technology

India nuclear missile tracking technology

India has now joined a select group of nations that possess nuclear missile tracking capability. The secretive vessel with this technology, referred to as VC 11184, was quietly commissioned into service by the Indian Navy in October last year, reports the Economic Times.

The ship has the capability to monitor missile launches by India’s adversaries, Pakistan and China, at long distances.

This nuclear missile tracking ship was under construction at Visakhapatnam’s Hindustan Shipyard since 2014.

The successful commissioning of this ship was due to the direct involvement of the Prime Minister’s Office and the National Security Advisor. This project was under the supervision of the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), India’s technical intelligence agency.

The ship had cleared trials in 2020 but the induction got delayed by a few months due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, harbour trials of the ocean surveillance ship began sometime in 2018.

The ship will be operated by a joint crew, from the NTRO, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Navy.

With the induction of the vessel into service, India is now part of a small group of four countries — the US, Russia, France and China — which operate similar vessels.

The weight of this vessel is 15,000-tonne and will carry a surveillance system that has three dome-shaped antennas. The ship’s surveillance system has been put through extensive testing since 2018.

Apart from tracking missile launches, this ship will also be used for electronic intelligence (ELINT) and monitoring missile tests as part of the ballistic missile defence programme that is under development.
