Veeran Sundaralingam Kudumbanar, The Army General of Kattabomman

During Krishna Devaraya’s rule, Tamil Nadu was split into 64 settlements and Palayakkars/Poligars were granted the right to tax. After the disintegration of the Vijayanagara Empire, these Palayakkars declared independence and functioned like independent Kings.  Veerapandiya Kattabomman was a 17th-century Palayakkar of Panchalankurichi, near Ottapidaram in the Thoothukudi district. Veeran Sundaralingam Kudumbanar was the Army General of Palayakkar Kattabomman. He was born in Govarnagiri near Panchalankurichi.

Sundaralingam’s path to Kattabomman’s Army General

During the early adulthood of Sundaralingam, the Ettayapuram Maharaja’s private farmland was once supplied with water from a canal in Governagiri. The people of Governagiri relied on this canal for their drinking water as well. Once there was a shortage of water to Maharaja’s farms. Kattabomman ordered his soldiers to close the Governagiri channel so that his farm could be supplied with water. When the soldiers arrived in Governagiri to close the canal, they faced stiff resistance from Sundaralingam and his friends. However, the resistance they encountered was so strong that they had no alternative but to retreat. After learning of the incident, Kattabomman informed his soldiers that he wishes to visit Sundaralingam. Sundaralingam was taken to a house by the soldiers, who told him that Kattabomman would be coming to visit him. Sundaralingam was expecting Katabomman to arrive, but instead, he received two other guests. They told him that they had come to rob the house and that if he remained silent, he would get a share of the loot. Sundaralingam became enraged and fought the robbers vehemently. The robbers had no choice but to expose their identities. They were none other than the Veerapandiyan and his Secretary Thanapathi Pillai, who had come to put Sundaralingam’s trustworthiness to test. Sundaralingam was appointed as the Army General by Veerapandiyan Kattabomman.

The transition of Sundaralingam to Veeran Sundaralingam:

After India coming under direct British rule in 1857, Collectors were appointed as their representatives and given the authority to levy taxes. The Palayakkars in many places refused to pay taxes to the British government. The English government cracked down on Palayakkars who refused to pay taxes.

When many kings bowed to the demands of the British East Indian Company, Veerapandiya Kattabomman stood firm and waged a war against them, with Sundaralingam’s support. On 5th September 1799, the British forces without any prior notice surrounded the Panchalankurichi Fort, but Sundaralingam did not back off. Not many knew that he himself had a devious plan to put an end to the British plans of destroying the Panchalankurichi Fort. To save Panchalankurichi fort, Sundaralingam and his fiancée Vadivu jumped into a British ammunition stockpile with a fire torch and detonated the ammunition, killing several British soldiers in the process. They became one of the first-ever known ‘human bombs’ and written into history for eternity. And thus he is aptly called ‘Veeran’ Sundaralingam.

Legacy towards the end:

Dr. Krishnasamy’s Puthiya Tamilagam, which emerged from the Devendrakula Velalar Federation, has asserted Maveeram Sundaralinga Kudumbanar as a cultural symbol. In 1997, when the Government of Tamil Nadu renamed Virudhunagar division of the state owned bus transport corporation as Veeran Sundaralingam Transport Corporation, it evoked opposition from several BC castes which ultimately led to caste clashes. As a result, the TN government removed the names of all  leaders and personalities from the names of districts and state-owned entities.

But the history of these immense, irreplaceable hero Sundaralingam and Tyagi Vadivu has been deliberately hidden. Even though our history pages have failed to recognize Veeran Sundaralingam, he continues to live through local legends and folklore.

3400 year old ‘Lost City’ unearthed in Egypt

A 3400-year-old ‘Lost City’ from Egypt has been excavated from the desert sands by researchers. This is believed to be the ruins of the “Lost Golden City” dating back to the reign of Amenhotep III, the ninth king of the 18th dynasty. His reign was believed to have been the golden rule and was one where there was a lot of prosperity.

“Many foreign missions searched for this city and never found it,” Dr Zahi Hawass, the former Egyptian Minister of State for Antiquities Affairs, said in a statement. The famed archaeologist was leading an Egyptian team in search of Tutankhamun’s mortuary temple when they made the discovery last September. The excavation area is located near Luxor, between Rameses III’s temple at Medinet Habu and Amenhotep III’s temple at Memnon.

This city was known to be one of the largest administrative centres during the time and was an industrial settlement, back when Egypt was at the peak of its power.  This is said to have been the home to the artisans who used to work on the ‘tombs in the Valley of the Kings.’

This city was built in quite a unique way with a single access point and zigzag walls. There was a single entry and exit area, and this led to the internal corridors and passageways, designed in a way that offers maximum control.

“Will take off half my moustache if DMK wins” says DMK’s own panchayat leader

Ever heard of people betting on the fact that their own party’s candidate will lose? Well, believe it or not, this is the case with the DMK as their own party member has proceeded to place a bet on the fact that their party candidate will lose in the Manapparai constituency.

This is in connection with the video of a group of DMK official that has been doing the rounds. In the video, Marungapuri village’s DMK wing chairman Pazhaniyaandi, DMK’s Tiruchirapalli district councillor Sivakumar, Pazhuvanchi’s panchayat leader Durai are seen engaging in a discussion about the recent assembly elections.

In the video that was released, Durai was heard saying, “Manapparai’s DMK candidate will definitely not win. I challenge you all that, if this happens, I will take off half of my moustache.” While there has been a news that made the rounds that there has been a lot of internal clashes in DMK, this video has only affirmed that it could soon be the quits for the party. This has triggered fears among the ‘brethren’ and sympathizers of the DMK.

It is to be noted that the candidate who stood in this constituency against AIADMK sitting MLA Chandrasekar was not from the DMK but a DMK alliance member party Manidhaneya Makkal Katchi’s candidate Abdul Samadh.

“Let’s stop this before they bring about a full-on Hindutva rule”: DK leader K Veeramani

Dravida Kazhagam’s (DK) leader K. Veeramani has condemned the announcement by the Tamil Nadu State Registration Department that the fees for registration on auspicious days are higher than on other days.

Commenting on this, he said, “It is unconstitutional for the Tamil Nadu government to declare that on auspicious days, even if it is a public holiday and a public holiday, superstitious people who believe that if they register on that day, they will earn more and prosper, they can pay extra and register on that day.”

He went on to say, “If it is a holiday for other departments, isn’t it illegal to open the registrar’s office on that day for registration purposes? If this is allowed, then astrology itself will no longer be the dominant astrology. This should be condemned by all those who seek to protect the Constitution. I call upon all the rationalists and secularists, to ask to the Tamil Nadu government to step back from issuing such orders. It is a warning that, if left unchecked, will make the entire country to become a pro-RSS bureaucracy. Let’s stop this before they bring about a full-on Hindutva rule.”

Kerala: Another nun found dead in a well

A nun identified as Mable Joseph (42) was found dead in a well at St. Joseph’s convent in Kureepuzha near Kollam on Friday (April 16). The deceased is identified as Mable Joseph (42), a native of Karunagappally.

Her body was found in the well by the inmates of the convent when they went looking for her after she missed the morning prayer.

A suicide note allegedly written by her was also recovered from her bedroom in which she stated that she was ending her life due to my health issues and allergies adding that nobody was responsible for her death.

“Nobody is responsible for my death. Keep me in your prayers,” the note further read. The letter also stated that her body would be inside the well.

Reports mention that Mable reached the convent a month ago. Police are investigating the matter.

In Kerala, there have been around 20 cases of nuns being found dead in the wells of convents since 1987 including the sensational Sister Abhaya Case, wherein a Catholic nun Abhaya was found dead in a well on March 27, 1992.

Very recently, a nun named Sr Juseena Thomas (45) of St. Thomas Convent was found dead in a pond near an abandoned quarry near Vazhakkala in Ernakulam.

In May 2020, 21-year-old Divya P Johnny, a novice, was found dead in a well at a convent in Thiruvalla. In September 2018, Sr Susan Mathew, a teacher at St Stephen school, Pathanapuram, was found dead in the well near her convent.

In all these cases, neither the convent officials nor the diocese filed an FIR or conducted a probe to find out the reasons for the deaths. After the burial, a press issue was released citing ‘normal death’ in these cases.
