Former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis accuses state police of extorting pharma companies

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday (17 April) had a heated argument with the state police who he has accused of harassing a Daman-based Remdesivir supplier.

While speaking to the reporters, Fadnavis said, “Four days ago, we had requested Bruck Pharma to supply a stock of Remdesivir vials to Maharashtra. They said they couldn’t until permissions were given. I spoke with Union Minister Mansukh Mandviya and got Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s permission. Tonight around 9 pm, the police arrested him.”

In a written statement, Fadnavis said it was “our sincere attempt to get remdesivar for Maharashtra. And accordingly we were all trying when suddenly Bruck Farma official was detained by Mumbai police.”

Fadnavis then went on excoriate Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Manjunath Singh who told that they had inputs that some exporters had 60,000 vials and they only wanted to verify the same.

He said, “We showed the police the permission letter. He (DCP) said it wasn’t communicated to them earlier” and whatever happened was wrong.

The DCP who was being questioned for his act denied the allegations of arresting the distributor and said that the Remdesivir supplier and he was just summoned for an inquiry because of black marketing of the antiviral medication.

DCP Manjunath Singh told reporters, “There’s a shortage of Remdesvir in the state and black marketing is rampant. We had got information about this storage facility. Acting in good faith, we only wanted to verify the inputs. He (supplier) was called for an inquiry, it wasn’t an arrest.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is in opposition in Maharastra had sent a delegation to talk to the producers of remdesivar. Fadnavis said, “Four days ago our leaders Pravin Darekar and Prasad Lal had gone to Daman to Bruck Pharma and requested them to supply the drug to Maharashtra. They obliged but said they did not have the license. Then I spoke to Mansukh Mandaviya( minister of state I/c of ports, shipping and waterways) and got them the license,”.

Toda tribes plant trees in Udhagai in memory of actor Vivek

Toda tribes in the Nilgiris district planted saplings to pay homage to actor Vivek.

Vivek, an actor and social activist popularly known as Chinna Kalaivanar, died of a heart attack on April 17th. Not only the Tamil Nadu film industry but also the general public, are grieving his death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted their condolences message for his untimely demise.

His links to the Nilgiri District go back a long way. Aware of the role of the Nilgiris district in environmental conservation, actor Vivek insisted that the Nilgiris should be protected. He told the students of Udhagai that if he sees a vacant lot, he would grow a tree, and he encouraged them to do the same. He also emphasized the importance of helmets for two-wheelers. Then, in 2019, he took cleaning work in the Ellahalli area of Udhagai.

Then he said, “Udhagai is a major tourist destination in the world. There is no rain in Udhagai, despite the presence of trees. The climate of the Nilgiris district has increased by 1.6 degrees. We should plant more native trees and avoid trees that are alien to this region. Rainwater can be collected and used sparingly.”

But his untimely demise has left the people of Tamil Nadu in shock. In remembrance of the late actor Vivek, the Todar tribe of Bagalkodu herd near Udagai in the Nilgiris district paid homage by planting a tree.

“We will unite the people in the Nilgiris district to plant 10 lakh saplings to conserve nature and fulfill Vivek’s ambition,” the Toda tribes said.

Vivekh: The Comedian who was much more than just that

I woke up today morning on what was supposed to be just another Saturday until it took a melancholic twist. Unlocking my phone and opening WhatsApp, I was flooded with RIP messages for Vivekh, and everything around me came to a standstill. I couldn’t believe what I was reading and nearly dropped my phone, as my eyes welled up in tears.

For someone who was that loner kid in school, movies and books have always been my solace. One of the fondest memories of my childhood that I have, involve coming back home from school and watching Vivekh’s comedy clips on TV. Coming from a family of Vadivelu fans, I was often made fun of just because I was the only Vivekh fan. No offence to our very own Vaigai Puyal without whose punchlines, I would hardly have any comebacks in life. But the death of someone who had been more than just an entertainer and had deeply instilled in me values of rationalism and such hit me hard, so much so that it felt like a personal loss.

The amount of thought and effort that goes into his dialogues are so profound that it makes us wonder whether it was the soul of Kalaivaanar himself that possessed Vivekh. For, the number of social messages that are sprinkled across in his comedies are countless and evergreen, and shockingly, still relevant.

5 gems that Vivekh gave through his comedy

Despite the hundreds of unforgettable scenes that have captured our mind, here are 5 of my favourite scenes that makes us not only laugh out loud but question the things that we have considered as normal for so long that their irrational nature has shadowed us.

1. Parashakti spoof (Paalayathamman, 2000)

Vivekh would have done his own version of the famous monologue from Parashakti, but as a spoof, justifying all the crimes that he did, and saying how so many more like him are left to live freely while he had been the one to have gotten caught. He hilariously explains how he had posed as a fake Swamiji and looted people, acted a bogus Vaastu astrologer, and says how he did all of this in the public interest. This makes us realise the number of ways in which people have been duped into giving away their money by such fraudsters.

2. Casteism talk as Venkataraman Iyengar (Saamy, 2003)

Be it questioning why there was such a huge problem over applying the Saivite or Vaishnavite symbol on the forehead of the temple elephant, or arguing for the equality of those belonging to the Dalit community or even argument against superstition like marrying donkeys to invoke rain, his rationalism made us realise the importance of equality and need for revisiting our beliefs and values that are based on pointless superstitions.

3. Super Subbu (Kadhal Sadugudu, 2003)

With Paravai Muniyamma by his side as a personal cheerleader, he would have emphasized on protecting the girl child, the need for family planning and how it was important to take strict and serious action for sexual crimes against women, all the while entertaining with his signature punchlines and puns.

4. Mohan (Run, 2002)

Portraying the typical youngster who comes to the city with dreams of making it big, Vivekh would have played the character of Mohan who realises how important it is to always keep one’s eyes and ears open. His stuff gets stolen on his first day in the city and he tries to make it somehow by finding his friend’s address. His hilarious mishaps make for a great laugh, all the while talking about all the various social evils like the ‘namesake’ protests that political parties do and the kidney theft mafia. His hilarious ‘kaaka biryani‘ joke is an evergreen one and is something that has been a part of our comedic vocabulary for everyone who grew up in that decade.

5. Open sewages (Thirumalai, 2003)

His rib-tickling encounters while attempting to attend an interview for a job is sure to make anyone burst out in laughter. He deserves special credits for creating awareness about the danger of open sewages all the while making it fun. The interview scene, in the end, is the cherry on top.

Throughout his career, he had acted in over 220 films. That is not all, since he was also someone who always had public interest in mind even off-screen.

Personal life and philanthropy

Vivekh had three children, Amrithanandini, Tejaswini and Prasanna Kumar. But, he had lost his son to brain fever a  few years ago and was completely shattered and depressed. But, he managed to pull himself up as well as those around him by plunging himself into social work and philanthropy. He even took up the piano to cope with the grief by himself.

Vivekh was an ardent follower of late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and his close associate. He used to carry a book of Kalam’s Wings of Fire wherever he went and took immense pleasure in fulfilling Kalam sir’s dream of planting 1 crore saplings under his Green Kalam initiative. Sadly, he passed away before he could complete the goal. Nevertheless, he was still able to accomplish the planting of 35 lakh saplings, which is no less a feat. He is also the brand ambassador from the Tamil Nadu government’s Plastic Pollution Free Tamil Nadu campaign.

Awards and accolades

Vivekh was bestowed with the Kalaivanar award in 2003 by the Tamilnadu State Government and the Padmashri in 2009 by the Central Government. He was also granted an honorary doctorate by Sathyabama University in 2015 and is the proud recipient of 3 Filmfare awards, 5 Tamilnadu State Film Awards, and 4 International Tamil Film Awards. He has also received an award from Asianet and an Edison award.

With a heavy heart, I write him this eulogy, as words don’t suffice to justify the impact that he has created in the lives of millions of people worldwide.

Madras HC dismisses case filed against Devendrakula Vellalar legislation

Madras HC increased security in court campus after country bombs were exchanged among suspects in the Armstrong murder case. Christian shrine

The Madars High Court has dismissed case filed against the President for approving the amendment to rename the 7 sub-sects from Scheduled Castes as Devendrakula Vellalars.

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2021, seeks to regroup the seven Scheduled Caste sub-castes — Pallar, Kudumbar, Kadaiyar, Pannadi, Kaaladi, Vadhiriyar, and Devendrakulathar — as ‘Devendrakula Vellalar’ community.

Karvendan, a resident of Karur, had filed a public interest litigation at the Madras High Court seeking an injunction restraining the President from approving the law and not publishing it in the Gazette.

He stated that the law was passed by the Parliament when there were no MPs from Tamil Nadu and that the bill was passed to satisfy certain community leaders in the view of elections. He also said that it was against the Model Code of Conduct.

The case came up for hearing in a session comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamurthy, who said the President had already approved the amendment and dismissed the petition.

Kerala High Court quashes FIR registered against ED by Crime Branch

Congress Kerala BJP Pinarayi Vijayan

In a fresh development in the sinister Kerala gold smuggling case, the Kerala High Court quashed the two FIRs registered against Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials by the Crime Branch unit of state police.

The court’s ruling comes as a huge setback for Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the gold smuggling case, after he gave his consent to the Crime Branch unit to register cases against ED officials for allegedly coercing prime accused Swapna Suresh into giving statements implicating Vijayan.

The Crime Branch’s case against the ED was based on a complaint by two women police officials in charge of providing security to Swapna Suresh who allegedly overheard the ED pressurising her to name Vijayan when Swapna Suresh was in judicial custody.

On Friday, Justice V G Arun ruled that the Crime Branch had not followed the rule of law and hence the two FIRs have to be quashed. The ruling added that the authorities can take up the case with the concerned court.

Senior Congress legislator V D Sateeshan said, “All this went ahead because it was Assembly election time and Vijayan wanted to portray a false image that he is one who will take on anything to gain the confidence of the people, especially when he was leading the Left front in the election. This is similar to the fight that takes place in the circus ring, when everyone knows it’s a fake one”.
