DMK goons threaten old man in Choolaimedu for asking them to stop insulting Hindus

A recent video of a group of DMK goons threatening an aged man in Choolaimedu in Chennai has caused a stir amongst those on social media.

In the video, the goons are seen demanding ₹5000 from the old man. When he refuses, they are found threatening him saying that they had to be paid a fine since this man had allegedly been ‘canvassing against the DMK in his area and has been asking people not to vote for their party’s symbol.’

The old man is seen retorting saying that any party that acts against the Hindus are not worthy of their support. Hearing this, the goons are observed to attempt to physically harm the old man. This progressed into a heated brawl between the two entities. The public of the locality rushed to the spot and split them up.

One of the members in the public was observed to be trying to call the police. The police had arrived at the spot soon after. It is expected that an FIR will be filed shortly against these goons. Many on social media said that this is a glimpse into the kind of environment that will prevail in the state if the DMK comes to power.

Transferred IPS Officer from Maharashtra writes letter to CM seeking justice

Param Bir Singh, a transferred IPS officer from Maharashtra, has written a letter to Uddhav Thackeray, the CM of Maharashtra, in an attempt to seek justice. This letter mentions that there were a lot of untruthful statements made by the Home Mnister of Maharashtra against the former, following his transfer from the post of Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, to the post of Commandant General of Home Guards, Maharashtra State. This had been carried out since there had been a mishap at Antillia, the residence of the Ambanis.

In the letter, Param says the following:

“On 25th February 2021, a case bearing no. 35/ 2021 was registered with the Gamdevi Police Station as a result of a car with explosives being found at Altamount Road near Antilia, the residence of Shri Mukesh Ambani. The said case is thereafter being investigated by the ATS and the NIA. All necessary assistance had been rendered by my office and my officers for the conduct of a free and fair investigation by the ATS and the NIA into the Antilia incident. ”

He went on to say that he had informed the CM as well as he President of the Nationalist Congress Party, Shri Sharad Pawar and other senior Ministers under multiple instances about the malpractices being carried out by the Home Minister. He further accused the Home Minister of going behind his back to give orders to his subordinates.

The main accusation was that the Home Minister had asked the IPS Officer to collect Rs 100 crore every month from bars and restaurants, despite the officer stating that the hookah bars in Mumbai should be closed with immediate effect due to the malpractices that have been going on in these places. The letter ended with the officer asking the CM to take appropriate action towards the Home Minister.

Featured Image: Representational photograph

The Income Tax Department carried out searches on 17 March on properties related to a prominent builder and developer group based in Mumbai. Searches were also conducted in properties linked to dealers engaged in the trade of cellphone accessories. In all, 29 premises located in Mumbai were covered under the search operation, while 14 premises were covered under survey action.

The real estate group is developing a commercial mall with with 950 units exclusively for the mobile accessories business. Of these, about 905 of the units were sold from 2017 till date. Information stored in a pen drive found on the searched premises revealed that the builder group has taken an amount of ₹150 crore as on-money receipts over and above the agreement value, which is unaccounted for in the books of accounts on sale of such units. Further, similar evidence of on-money amounting to ₹70 crore has been found in the pen drive pertaining to a residential-cum-commercial project. Cash amounting to ₹5.50 crore has been found and seized from various premises of this group. The receipts of on-money for sale of shops and flats by the builder in various projects recorded in digital form have been seized.

Regarding the dealers engaged in the business of mobile accessories, incriminating evidence was found pertaining to out-of-books sales. The group imports goods from China and sells these goods to various parties all over India. The imports are under-invoiced and payments are made through hawala channels. Thirteen secret godowns containing unaccounted stock have been discovered, wherein the stock is being inventoried and valuation is under progress.

Furthermore, evidence of unaccounted investments in properties by the said dealers amounting to ₹40.5 crore has been detected. Out of this, unaccounted investments worth ₹ 21 crore are against the purchase of units in the said commercial mall. Four undisclosed bank accounts in the names of employees have also been detected, which are used to collect the sale proceeds from the retail vendors of the groups. The total deposits in the bank accounts amount to ₹ 80 crore.

Mobile accessories sector remains unaccounted, says I-T department

This operation has revealed that the entire sector of trading in mobile accessories is largely unaccounted for. The main components are imported from China through Mumbai and Chennai ports. Search has revealed that the dealers are undervaluing the sales and purchases in a major way. The transactions with Chinese counterparts take place through the We-Chat app. The Department has recovered the We-chat messages using forensics.

The information is being verified and collated by the Income Tax department to extract information regarding the quantum and cost of Chinese imports.

Unaccounted cash of ₹5.89 crore has been seized, so far, in this operation. The searches, as yet, have resulted in the detection of undisclosed income of around ₹270 crore. Further investigations and the exercise of valuation of unaccounted stock are in progress.

Congress leader Mohiuddin Bava donates ₹1 lakh to goshala that was demolished by BJP government

goshala demolished
Featured Image Credits: Udayavani

Karnataka Congress leader Mohiuddin Bava donated an amount of ₹1 lakh towards the Kapila Park Goshala that was demolished by the district administration and the police on 4 March. The demolition had left around 300 heads of cattle stranded without shelter.

On 20 March, Bava, a former MLA from Mangalore City North, handed over a cheque of ₹1 lakh to Prakash Shetty, who runs the cow shelter, to build a temporary shelter for the cattle. Bava said that the BJP government pretends to care for cows but did not do anything after the demolition to protect nearly 300 cows that were left stranded.

Prakash Shetty said that none of the BJP leaders who had attended the inauguration of the goshala had offered any help after the demolition.

Shetty had earlier accused the district administration of demolishing the goshala without any warning. “There are 300 cattle in my goshala. Where should I find an alternative land for the cattle? The least government could have done is to provide an alternate land for the goshala,” he had said.

He said that when bulldozers arrived at the cow shelter for the demolition, only bulls were present, while the cows had gone out for grazing. “It is shocking that a political party, that came to power on the promise of protecting cows, has now destroyed a goshala”, Shetty rued on the day of the demolition.

“This cruel act of the administration and representatives is a betrayal to Hindutva and humanity. They are worse than Mughal rulers,” he had said.

Days after the demolition in Mangaluru, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa announced the state government’s plans to establish cow shelters, to prevent the slaughter of cows and protect livestock, in all 31 districts across the state as he presented the state budget.

Shetty denies any illegality in the running of the shelter

The Kapila Park Goshala had been operating for more than eight years on 19 cents of land in Kenjar on the outskirts of Mangaluru city. It housed cattle of the indigenous Kapila breed. The land is part of the 158 acres of land of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board has earmarked for the proposed Coast Guard Academy.

The goshala was demolished after it was alleged that the land had been bought illegally. During a District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting in February, BJP MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had directed the district administration to clear the cow shelter within the week.

However, Shetty has denied the allegations that he had built the land illegally. He said there were records showing that he had legally purchased the land from the earlier owner. He also claimed that he managed the goshala using his own funds and had not taken any funds from the government.

Modi to visit Bangladesh on March 26, 27

Modi Bangladesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to visit Bangladesh on March 26 and 27.

“This visit is in connection with the commemoration of three epochal events – Mujib Borsho, the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh; and 50 years of Bangladesh’s war of liberation”, according to a press release by the Ministry of External Affairs.

PM Modi had last visited Bangladesh in 2015.

During the visit, PM Modi will attend the National Day programme of Bangladesh on March 26, as the guest of honour.

While in Bangladesh, Modi plans to visit Rahman’s memorial in Tungipara, also called the Bangabandhu memorial.

He will also pay respect to Harichand Thakur at his shrine in Orakandi. Thakur was the founder of the Matua tradition. Members of the Matua community hold significance in the upcoming polls in West Bengal. After the Partition-related violence in 1947 and the subsequent persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, many of the Matuas migrated to West Bengal. An estimated two or three crore people from the community are spread out over North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia and smaller parts of Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Cooch Behar and Bardhaman. Matuas have been influential in deciding the fate of candidates in 30 assembly seats in Bengal.

PM Modi is also likely to visit “Sugandha Shaktipith” (Satipith) temple in Shikarpur in Barishal district.

If time permits, Modi will also visit the ancestral homes of Rabindranath Tagore and revolutionary freedom fighter Bagha Jatin.

Modi will also hold bilateral talks with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his visit and call on Bangladeshi President Md. Abdul Hamid. Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, will also meet PM Modi.

This is Modi’s first visit to a foreign country since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

“For how many years will reservations continue?”, asks Supreme Court

Supreme Court Constitutes SIT To Probe Chennai Minor Sexual Assault Case. statehood ncpcr muslim girl marriage free speech

A constitution bench of the Supreme Court hearing the Maratha quota case on 19 March asked for how many generations would reservations in jobs and education continue. The bench also questioned whether the removal of the 50% limit on reservation would affect the right to equality under Article 14 of the Constitution, and thus lead to a “resultant inequality”.

“If there is no 50% limit, what is the concept of Article 14 then? What would happen to the resultant inequality and for how many generations will this continue?”, the bench asked Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who was arguing for more reservations beyond the 50% limit. The 50% cap was imposed by the Indira Sawhney judgment.

A five-judge bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, L Nageshwara Rao, S Abdul Nazeer, Heman Gupta and S Ravindra Bhat heard the submissions of senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Paramjit Patwalia, who were appearing on behalf of the respondents.

The Constitution Bench was holding the fifth day of hearing petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Maharashtra State Reservation For Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act which provides for a quota to Marathas in jobs and education.

‘Mandal Commission based on 1931 Census, re-look needed’, says advocate

Rohatgi on Friday argued that there are sufficient reasons warranting a re-look of the nine-bench Indira Sawhney judgement, including the fact that it was only meant to cover Article 16(4) and not Article 15(4). “Mandal himself said that it needed to be reconsidered after 20 years. There are also different voices in the judgemet. It’s not 8:1 majority. The group was divided into 4:3:2, and everyone had a different view on whether the 50% limit could be breached or not”, he said.

Rohatgi also added that splinter groups should not exist and that there could only be a majority group and a minority group when it comes to verdicts by a bench.

Rohatgi then proceeded to argue that the interpretation of Articles 15 and 16 had to be done “in a holistic manner” by considering the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP), which, according to Rohatgi, was not done by Indira Sahwney. He said that there were no limitations, other than public employment and adeuqate representation.

He submitted that the 50% limit, which has already been debunked, cannot remain the rule and that the State had the power to strike a balance while making a law for reservation.

“After the Constitutional amendment, the reservation across the nation has broadly crossed 70%. What was struck down has been resurrected. Whether Indira Sawhney will still rule when there is a Constitutional amendment is a very big question. Look at Dr. Ambedkar’s speech. What the Constitution makers have said will never be frozen in time”, he said.

The senior advocate then argued that the premise of the Mandal Commission was the Census of 1931, and as the population has grown over the past century, the “intrinsic material” of the report could not hold water. He added that as the Indira Sahwney judgement did not consider the DPSP, the 50% limit needed a re-look.

‘Despite so many schemes, has no development taken place?’, asks SC Bench

The Bench responded, “Mr Rohatgi, the purpose of review was that those who have come out from backwardness must be eliminated. Seventy years have passed since Independence. So many beneficial schemes are being carried out by states. Can we accept that no development has taken place?”

Rohatgi responded that the Constitution has not specified the 50% limit anywhere and that it had merely been read into it by the Courts. To this, Justice Bhushan stated that it was the Constitutional Bench which interpreted Constitutional principles, which is why it was a living document.

It was additionally submitted that relooking one point in Indra Sawhney and not others would make the directions in the judgement redundant.

“If it must go, then the whole thing must go. There must a be a holistic relook. If the State’s power of identifying socially and educationally backward classes is taken away, a part of Indra Sawhney also gets diluted since it directed the constitution of State Commissions”, submitted Rohatgi.

The Court then enquired, “If there is no 50% limit, what is the concept of Article 14 then? What would happen to the resultant inequality and for how many generations will this continue?”

‘Yet to achieve advancement’, argues advocate

Rohatgi responded that in 70 years, the country had not reached close to its ideal goal and that was the reason for the Constitutional amendments.

“All these provisions being added to the Constitution are an indication that we have not reached anywhere near emancipation that we require. 50% ought not to be the guiding factor. Despite the mandate, we are yet to achieve advancement. All judgements prior to Indra Sawhney have not laid down a uniform view. It must be left to the State to fix reservations. 103rd Amendment is a clear pointer for the overruling of the 50% principle”, the advocate submitted.

Referring to how Constitutional amendments which brought in Article 16(4)(a) and (b) undoes the principle laid down under Indra Sawhney, Rohatgi submitted that a relook was required.

“EWS are those specified by the State on the basis of income and other economic issues. This cannot be done by the Parliament or a schedule to the Constitution. Indra Sawhney has been effectively done. It needs a relook because its entire basis has completely gone”, Rohatgi said.

“There exist several burning issues of reservation today. How can we say that we are bound by this? By virtue of 10% reservation for the economically weaker, the findings in Indra Sawhney that backwardness cannot be adjudged by income or economic criteria alone are gone, and therefore it requires a relook holistically”, concluded Rohatgi.

Andhra MP seeks action against Telangana IPS officer for promoting anti-Hindu ideology

Praveen Kumar IPS

YSRCP MP Raghu Rama Krishna Raju has complained to the Centre and sought an inquiry and disciplinary action against RS Praveen Kumar, IPS. Kumar is Secretary of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society.

The MP has also demanded an investigation into the activities of Kumar’s private organization, Social Welfare AEROES (SWAEROES), on the grounds that the organisation spreads hate and propaganda in contravention to the Central Civil Service (Conduct) Rules 1964. Praveen Kumar is allegedly referred to within the organisation as the “Supreme SWAERO”, giving the organisation an almost cult-like feature.

The complaint comes after a video surfaced on social media which showed Kumar promoting anti-Hindu sentiments among children. In the video, Kumar and others can be seen taking a pledge which insults the traditions and sentiments of the Hindu community.

Earlier, The Commune had reported that the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF) too had complained to the Centre against RS Praveen Kumar and his organisation.

In a letter to President Ramnath Kovind, the MP from Narasapuram writes that Praveen Kumar is promoting anti Hindu ideology and corrupting the minds of children studying in the schools and hostels run by the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS). Praveen Kumar’s stint as the Secretary to the TSWREIS has continued for more than 7 years, which is a contravention to the general practice of Department of Personnel & Training, the letter alleges.

The TSWREIS was set up by the Telangana government in 2014 to provide quality education to needy and deprived children and to administer the various schools, colleges and hostels which are run by the Telangana state government.

The letter adds that the logo of SWAEROES is intentionally copied from that of the TSWERIS, leading the public to misunderstand that the IPS officer’s private organisation is also an officially setup government body.

The letter states that such dubious activities in the name of welfare must stop and punitive measures must be adopted to bring justice to state actors working in such a fashion.

At an event on 15 March called “Bheem Deeksha” that marked the SWAEROES “Holy month”, at Dhulikatta Village, Vadukapoor Mandal, Peddapalli District, Telangana, members of the SWAEROES and participants of the event took this pledge:

I do not have faith in Gowri, Ganapathi or other Hindu gods. I will not worship them. I do not accept the concept of avatars of God. I will not do Sraardha Karma nor do Pinda Pradhaan. I will not do anything that is against the principles and teachings of Buddha. I will not consume alcohol. I do not believe in Rama, Krishna. I will not worship them.”

Incidentally, this pledge draws inspiration from the pledge taken by Dr. BR Ambedkar upon his conversion to Buddhism at Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur, Maharashtra in 1956.

“By taking the names of Gods and Goddesses belonging to a particular religion, Mr. Praveen Kumar ― who is serving as an IPS officer and holding the responsible chair as Secretary to Telangana Social Welfare Residential Schools department schools, who is a highly decisive, authorized public bureaucrat ― is openly spreading hatred against other religions which is an uncalled for gesture”, the letter complains.

The letter also accuses the IPS officer of diverting taxpayers’ funds into his organisation and of being responsible for other financial irregularities. The letter also alleges that members of SWAEROES collect “unofficial fines” from hostel inmates. Furthermore, the letter alleges that minor girls from the hostels are kidnapped and abused by SWAEROES volunteers. Teachers and other staff members who question their activities are threatened, the letter states.

“Anti-Hindu meetings are conducted with minor school/college children to plant the seeds of hatred and division in young minds. The rules of these schools/hostels are tweaked to deny holidays for Hindu festivals. Children are brainwashed and forced to take pledges not to celebrate their family faith and ancestral traditions”, the letter adds.

“They also perpetrating to anti Hindu activities like tonsuring the children, inmates’ heads without getting parental permission. This is done as part of Buddhist preaching forced on the minor children. They are brainwashing the children with anti-Hindu propaganda, which fills hatred towards their ancestral faith, traditions and civilisation. This is a serious violation of the fundamental rights of the children and is also violation of United Nations Convention on Child rights as well. On the other hand, the Christian preachers have free access into the concerned hostels and schools. Anti-Hindu literature like the ones written by Kancha Iliaha is vastly distributed to the students. The parents of these children are shocked to learn of these things when children come home for holidays”, the letter states.

Volunteers of SWAEROES even attacked National SC Rights Protection Samithi’s representative Karne Srisailam at Panjagutta, Hyderabad, the MP alleges in his letter.

“Organisations like SWAERO in Telangana and Ambedkar India Mission (AIM) of Andhra Pradesh are using the pictures of serving IPS officers and bureaucrats in full uniform in their public, media, social media posts and videos”, the letter continues.

Given the serious nature of the accusations ― against an officer currently serving in the government at a high post, no less ― the Centre must initiate a fast-tracked investigation and take strict action against the accused. “It will be the entire society that will pay the price if people like Mr. RS Praveen Kumar are not dealt with an iron fist of law”, the letter adds ominously.

US Defence Secretary Austin meets PM Modi and NSA Doval on 3-day visit to India

Austin India visit Modi Doval

US Defence Secretary Lloyd J Austin III met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval Friday evening.

In the meeting, PM Modi outlined his vision for the strategic partnership between the two countries and emphasised the role of bilateral defence cooperation between the two sides.

Secretary Austin reiterated the USA’s commitment towards strengthening the bilateral India-US relations. He also expressed the US’s strong desire to enhance the strategic partnership for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. He also commended India’s leadership role in the Indo-Pacific and the growing engagement with like-minded partners across the region to promote shared goals.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to promote a free and open regional order. Both sides exchanged perspectives on shared challenges confronting the region and committed to further strengthen their broad ranging and robust defence cooperation.

Secretary Austin on a 3-day visit

Austin arrived in New Delhi on Friday on a three-day visit to India, from March 19 to 21. He is set to meet Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday. He is also expected to lay a wreath at the National War Memorial.

The American Defence Secretary is also expected to call on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in the second half on Saturday.

China on the agenda

India and the US are likely to discuss China and other important regional security issues, such as Afghanistan, during Secretary Austin’s visit. This is the first visit by a top official of the Biden administration to India.

India and the US have been working closely with each other after the Chinese attempts to change the status quo in the eastern Ladakh area in April-May last year. The US side also helped by providing timely defence hardware supplies during the conflict apart from sharing important satellite feed and inputs.

The Indo-Pacific region is largely viewed as an area comprising the Indian Ocean and the western and central Pacific Ocean, including the South China Sea. China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea and its efforts to advance into the Indian Ocean are seen to have challenged the established ‘rules-based global order’ headed by the USA. Moreover, China has criticised the Indo-Pacific framework and the Quad initiative as an Asian version of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), with the USA seeking to undermine its legitimate rise.

The Indian defence ministry said that Austin’s visit to India as part of his first overseas travel emphasises the strength of the India-US strategic partnership.
