The Sakalatheerthamudaiyavar temple is located at Theerthaandathanam near SP Pattinam in Ramanathapuram district. It is believed that Lord Ram performed pooja to the presiding deity of this temple after the epic war. During the Tamil months of Thai and Aadi, devotees take a dip at the sea adjacent to the temple, offer oblations to the departed souls in their families and later have a darshan of the deity in the temple.

Before proceeding to the main temple, the devotees, after taking a dip in the sea, pray to the idols of Vinayagar, Amman and Karuppar Swami that is placed near the shore.

This idol of Karuppar Swami was found damaged with its head cut off. There are no confirmed reports on who broke the idol. However, the villagers nearby the temple believe that the act could have been committed by a few mentally challenged people who have been roaming around the area for some days.

Police are investigating the incident.
