Bharat Dynamics to supply 4,960 MILAN-2T anti-tank guided missiles to Indian military

The Ministry of Defence (MoD)’s Acquisition Wing signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) on March 19.

Under the contract, the BDL will supply 4,960 MILAN-2T ATGMs to the army at a cost of ₹1,188 crore. This is a ‘repeat order’, which was signed in 2016. The BDL is a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU).

The Milan-2T is a Tandem Warhead ATGM with arange of 1,850 metres, produced by BDL under license from France’s MBDA Missile Systems. These missiles can be fired from ground as well as vehicle-based launchers and can be deployed in an anti-tank role for both offensive and defensive tasks. Induction of these missiles will further enhance the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces. Induction is planned to be completed in three years.

A big opportunity for the defence industry to showcase its capabilities, the MoD hailed the contract as a step in the direction of achieving the goal of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ in the defence sector.

Temple near Satyamangalam burns to ashes

The Muniyappan temple in the village of Punchaipuliyampatti near Sathyamangalam in Erode district is visited by hundreds of devotees everyday.  The temple is located in the village, the festivals at this temple are a sight for the sore eye.

This temple had had a thatched roof. The temple priest had locked the temple and gone home after completing the everyday evening puja at the temple. At midnight, the temple’s roof had suddenly gotten caught fire and began to burn.

Shocked, the locals immediately rushed to the temple and put out the fire. But as the fire began to spread rapidly, the people of the area lost control, and the Satyamangalam fire station was informed immediately. Firefighters rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control after an hour-long struggle.

But the whole temple was destroyed by the fire. Punchaipuliyampatti police have registered a case and are investigating the possibilities of the temple having caught fire at midnight. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the temple may have caught fire as a mysterious person from the area threw away a cigarette or a beedi without extinguishing it. The people of the area were deeply saddened to hear the news of the temple fire.

India and Uzbekistan wrap up military exercise in Uttarkhand

The second edition of the Indo-Uzbekistan Joint Field Training Exercise, Dustlik-II, culminated on Friday, 19 March, after ten days.

The joint exercise began on 10 March. In the duration of the exercise, training was focused on counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in an urban setting. Expertise on skills at arms was shared between both sides as well.

“The exercise also provided an opportunity to both Indian and Uzbek troops to foster everlasting professional and social bonding”, stated a press release by India’s Ministry of Defence.

“After intense military training, the joint exercise concluded with both armies exhibiting their combat power and dominance over the terrorist groups during the Validation Exercise. The closing ceremony showcased the immense talent with unique traditional touch of both nations. Senior officials expressed their satisfaction and gratitude towards the professional conduct of the exercise”, the release added.

“The bonhomie, espirit-de-corps and goodwill generated during the exercise will go a long way in future strengthening the bonds between the armed forces of both countries”, the press release said.

Telangana woman Syamala Goli becomes the second woman in the world to swim across the Palk Strait

47 year old Syamala Goli from Telangana became the second woman in the world to swim across the Palk Strait. She accomplished this feat on Thursday, at the 30 km Palk Bay Swimming expedition. She is also the 13th swimmer to have accomplished this.

This contest, which was flagged off by C.Velupillai Kandaiah Sivagnanam, Chairman of the Northern Provincial Council in Sri Lanka, spans from the Palk Strait in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in India. In a press release, the Indian High Commission referred to this as the event that established connectivity between the people of Sri Lanka and India.

It is to be noted that Syamala represented Telangana in the 2020 FINA World Masters Championship in Gwanju, South Korea. In Nov 2020, she swam a 30 km stretch in the Great Ganges River in Patna and secured 6th position with timing of 110 minutes. She is also multitalented, as she is also an animation film producer and director.

Syamala said in an interview that she believes that her crossing the Palk Strait will be an achievement for the whole of womanhood and hopes that this would inspire women to aim higher and believe that nothing is impossible.

Amid Bajwa’s calls for peace, Pakistan continues to supply arms to terrorists across the border using drones

Despite the offer of conditional talks to India from Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Pakistan is still supplying arms to militants across the border using drones. Speaking on India-Pakistan relations, General Bajwa had earlier said that it was time to bury the past and move forward.

However, India’s Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy informed the Rajya Sabha that Pakistan was still supplying weapons to militants using drones. The minister also said that the security agencies were investigating the cases and that the government was taking steps to check such supplies.

Since drones can be operated from a safe distance, they can easily be flown to a specific area to deliver weapons into the militants’ hands. Patrolling has been increased and high tech instruments are installed along the India-Pakistan border to check the operations of drones.

After the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 providing special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, the number of terror activities has come down heavily, the minister informed the House.

Congress deletes video that showed dismay of Hindus over violation of Sabarimala traditions

In another embarrassment for the Congress Party in Kerala, the official video released by the Kerala unit on the Sabarimala controversy of 2018, on their Facebook page, was withdrawn after the heavy criticism it received, as reported by Swarajya.

The video, made by the Kerala unit of the Congress, was to criticise the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s policies on the entry of women of menstruating age into the Sabarimala temple.

Earlier, the Congress had promised that they would bring in a legislation to protect the age-old traditions at Sabarimala temple if they were voted to power in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections. 

The video, which is one minute long, was part of the UDF campaign strategy to clarify Congress’ stand on the issue, says this report. In the video, a young woman is shown getting ready for a trip to Sabarimala by applying lipstick, putting on her headphones and picking up her trekking bag. There is a family of four men and two women shown in the video to be present in a house in traditional attire that prays and chants. It is clear in the video that the women in western attire is not going on a pilgrimage but a fun hike as she takes a selfie while two policemen are accompanying the woman.

The video gets more dramatic as the four men who had clearly followed the strict rituals giving way to her and the policemen move ahead before them. This video has been brilliantly shot with excellent messaging as the camera then shifts to the feet of the women in her footwear escorted by policemen in their uniform shoes, however, the other men are barefoot and are shown climbing steps leading to the Sabarimala temple. The video ends with the two traditionally dressed women shocked upon watching the same clip, and a slide with the UDF’s promise to formulate laws to “protect the interest of believers”, i.e. Hindus.

However, the UDF withdrew this video after it received criticism on social media. The reason given for the withdrawal was that the campaign video was published without due diligence or permission.

It must also be noted that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has become very desperate to win the alienated Hindu vote and its own leader and Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran has expressed regret over the incidents that took place at Sabarimala over women entry.

Cricketer Chris Gayle thanks PM Modi for providing COVID-19 vaccines to Jamaica

In a gesture of gratitude, former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has thanked India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (February 19) for providing the essential COVID-19 vaccines to Jamaica.

Jamaica is one of the biggest islands in the Caribbean region. India had sent 50,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines on March 11 as a part of India’s ‘Vaccine Maitri’.

In a video posted by the Indian High Commission in Jamaica on Twitter, Chris Gayle thanked PM Modi and the Government of India for extending help via vaccines to the Caribbean region.

The “Universe Boss”, as Gayle is popularly known in the cricketing world, said,” “Honourable PM of India and the people of India, the government of India, I want to thank you for your donation of vaccine to Jamaica, I appreciate it. Thank you so much. India, I will see you soon.”

West Indies cricketer Sir Vivian Richards, considered one of the greatest cricketers of all time, also thanked the Indian government for assisting the Caribbean region via its mega initiative to provide vaccines.

In a tweet, Jamaica PM Andrew Holness said, ” I am extremely pleased to report that yesterday afternoon, we received our first shipment of 50,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by the Government of India. We express our deep appreciation to the Government and people of India for this very much-needed support.”

House help announced as an electoral candidate by BJP in West Bengal

The State Assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry are scheduled to be held on April 6. The BJP is making great strides to give an opportunity to deserving candidates from various sections of the society. In light of the same, Kalita Majhi, a housemaid from Ausgram in Burdwan East in West Bengal, has been declared the BJP’s assembly candidate for the Keruwa Shibra constituency.

With her candidature announced on Thursday, Kalita went to the houses where she worked and asked for a month and a half of leave. She then went to the local party office of the BJP for her election duties. This has caused a great stir in the news.

Kalita was unable to study due to the severe poverty that her family faced, and had to drop out from school before she could graduate from primary school. Poverty struck her even after marriage, since her husband is a plumber. So, she had to start working as a maid. They have a son who is in the eighth grade. “I could not finish my studies due to lack of money. This grief will last me a lifetime. However, if I win the election, I will do everything I can to educate poor students and give them a chance. I can understand the pain of poverty,” she said.

Chandranath, the BJP’s deputy co-ordinator in the assembly constituency, said, “Our party is fighting for the interests of the poor. We are confident that the candidate will win.” Praise for the BJP’s move has been pouring in on social media and many are wishing her luck for the upcoming elections.

ISRO astronauts complete phase 1 training in Russia in preparation for ambitious manned mission Gaganyaan

In an imporant announcmentu nion Minister Jitendra Singh has said that the training of four astronauts for the mission in Russia is set to be completed this month, as reported by Times of India.

Gaganyaan is India’s ambitious maiden manned space flight mission and Indian astronauts were sent to Russia for training which will be followed by the second phase of training of the four astronauts which will be module-specific. The second phase of the Astronauts’ training is scheduled to take place in India itself.

Due to the Covid pandemic, there have been delays in the mission. However, India plans to successfully execute its first manned space flight before or on the eve of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s heaviest launch vehicle, ‘Bahubali’ GSLV Mark-III is all set to carry these astronauts to space. “Four astronauts are being trained for India’s first human space flight. Their one-year training in Russia is completing this month, with some delay on account of the COVID pandemic,” Union Minister Jitendra Singh was quoted by PTI as saying.

The Indian scientists are not taking any chances that may lead to the failure of the mission. So, before the actual manned flight, an unmanned mission is planned by end of 2021, which will then be followed by another flight that would carry the “Vyom Mitra”, the humanoid robot, to space.

Yet another attempt to convert illegally using foreign funding exposed

The Society for the Mission Sisters of Ajmer, a Rajasthan-based organization that is monitored by the LRO for FCRA irregularities and the illegal use of foreign funds, has been accused of receiving ₹4.34 crore in foreign funds and using it for illegal proselytizing.

Their target, in particular, are convicted prisoners, the sick, and non-Christians. Another notable factor is that the German-based Catholic Christian organization Misereor, which provided them with foreign funding, is already a fundraiser for HRLN, a organization that advocates and raises funds for the perpetrators of the Delhi violence. The Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), a group of lawyers calling for the accused in the Delhi riots, has received ₹50 crore from European churches. The money was used legally to argue in support of rioters (Anti-CAA rioters) and Shaheen Bagh ‘militants’. This includes a pregnant woman named Safoora Zargar. The LRO had already released the information last September.

The LRO had already demanded last September that Calin be arrested for trying to provoke riots in India by obtaining funds from abroad for this. The Society of the Mission Sisters of the Ajmer is also funded by the same European Catholic organization, Misereor, which is one of the four major European Christian organizations that funded them.
