Glucose analogue gets emergency approval for COVID treatment

India’s drug regulator DCGI has given the green signal for a glucose analogue called ‘2-DG’ for COVID treatment on an emergency basis. This is to be used as an adjunct treatment mechanism to supplement the primary treatment that is given to the patients.

“The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given permission for the emergency use of drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severe Covid-19 cases,” said Defence Research and Development Organisation on Saturday.

“Being a generic molecule and analogue of glucose, it can be easily produced and made available in plenty. It has been developed by the DRDO lab-Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences-in collaboration with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories. Clinical trials have shown that this molecule helps in the faster recovery of hospitalized patients and reduces supplemental oxygen dependence,” the release added.

In 2020, Patanjali had published a research paper about using this drug for COVID treatment. “The 2-DG can dock efficiently with viral main protease 3CLpro as well as NSP15 endoribonuclease, thus efficiently inactivating these viral receptors leading to incapacitation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Such incapacitation was possible by means of the formation of a hydrogen bond between 2-DG and proline residues of viral protease. The 2-DG derivative formed a hydrogen bond with the glutamine amino acid residues of the viral spike glycoprotein,” their paper said. Following this, DRDO had collaborated with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories to develop the analogue ‘2-DG’. After clinical trials were successful, it was submitted for approval to the DCGI and has now been approved for usage.

People are known to follow various procedures in order to keep breathing difficulties away by keeping their air passages clear of bacteria and viruses, and thus keep the coronavirus infection at bay. Doctors advise patients to strengthen their immunity power against diseases through physical exercise and good food. People have resorted to breathing exercises in a big way as well, in the recent months.

In this regard, personnel at the Sarjapur police station in Bengaluru have come up with an ingenious practice to stop the Covid-19 infection in its tracks. They stand around a pressure cooker and inhale the steam coming out of it to strengthen their breathing mechanism. In addition, they perform breathing exercises, consume ayurvedic ‘kashaya’ concoction, and zinc tablets.

The police officers also place medicinal herbs such as neem, tulsi and eucalyptus leaves into the cooker, fill it up with water and then heat it. The steam coming out of the cooker is routed through a tube, which is then inhaled.

The pressure cooker is fitted with a steel pipe and two outlets through which two police officials can inhale the steam together, said Harish V, the station in-charge. The personnel who have completed their shifts inhale the steam before they go home. Sometimes, zinc tablets are given to the policemen and their family members. Pressure cookers have turned out to be the police’s apparatus for a satisfying breathing exercise.

Similar arrangements have also been made at police stations across the state of Karnataka.

In Barke police station in Mangaluru, the staff use a steel pipe having four openings tied to a wooden frame, with the pressure cooker placed inside the frame. Three out of the four outlets can be used for taking in the stream, while the fourth is attached to the pressure cooker. This setup was created by Inspector Jyotirlinga Honakatti, which he made at Belagavi last year.

Several other police stations in Chitradurga, Haveri and Shivamogga have replicated this arrangement in their own way to facilitate the staff to maintain their health and escape from infection.

Stalin does a flip-flop on lockdown

Just a day after taking oath as Chief Minister, MK Stalin has imposed a full lockdown for a period of 14 days starting from May 10 to May 24.

It is to be noted that a few days ago on 24th April, the now Chief Minister MK Stalin had warned the government of imposing another lockdown after May 2.

Back then he had said that the lives and livelihoods in the state are not in a position to bear the brunt of another lockdown imposed by the government and that the authorities should take steps to ensure availability of beds, oxygen, ventilators and drugs required and prevent the spread of the virus.

Tamil Nadu is currently witnessing the second wave of the Wuhan Virus pandemic with hospitals getting overwhelmed with patients. A few days ago 13 patients had died at a hospital in Chengalpattu allegedly due to non-availability of oxygen.

In view of the rising cases, the Tamil Nadu government has imposed the lockdown. While it is necessary to impose curbs on movement in this time, many took to social media to point out the double talk of Mr. Stalin.

Complaint filed against YSRCP ZPTC election candidate for misusing SC benefits and suppressing facts in election affidavit

The BJP candidate who contested the Andhra Pradesh Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections from Kollipara constituency has complained against the YSRCP candidate Kathera Heni Christina for misusing reservation benefits meant for Scheduled Castes and for suppressing information about her children.

In the complaint to the District Collector, it has been alleged that Kathera Heni Christina, a Christian representing a Christian missionary organization named ‘Harvest India’ has misused reservation benefits meant for Scheduled Castes.

As per the Constitutional (Scheduled Castes) Order of the President 1950, a person ceases to be a member of the Scheduled Caste community if he/she professes a religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism.

Also, Kathera Heni Christina had mentioned names of only two of her children in the election affidavit. However, during a speech in an open conference in the United States she had said that she was blessed with 3 children. It has been reported in the complaint that she has 4 children in total.

The complaint notes that this is a violation of Section 19 (3) of the Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Act 1994 which clearly says that a person who is having more than two children shall be disqualified for election or for continuing as a member.

Kather Heni Christina had earlier filed Election Affidavit during 2014 General Assembly Elections and contested from Tadikonda Constituency (SC Reserved – Guntur) on behalf of YSR Congress Party. In her election affidavit she did not disclose the details of her children and their whereabouts whereas, in her current nomination as contestant for Kollipara ZPTC elections, she mentioned only 2 children by suppressing the fact she has 4 children.

In this light, BJP candidate Mandru Sarala Kumari who is also a member of Scheduled Caste and had contested the ZPTC election from Kollipara reserved constituency has petitioned the District Collector to take action against Kather Heni Christina for misusing the reservation benefits meant for Scheduled Castes and for suppressing the fact that she has four children.
