Madras High Court Refuses Urgent Hearing On NTK Functionary's Plea Against Govt Jobs For Karur Stampede Victims' Families

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court declined to grant an urgent hearing to a plea seeking to restrain the Tamil Nadu government from providing government jobs to the families of those who died in the Karur stampede, as reported in Hindu Tamil.

The request was made by advocate and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) Fishermen’s Wing State Coordinator, Theeran Thirumurugan, before a Division Bench comprising Justices J. Jeyachandran and Poornima.

During the hearing, Thirumurugan submitted that a case relating to the Karur stampede, in which 41 people lost their lives, is already pending before the Supreme Court and that a CBI investigation into the incident is underway.

He argued that, under such circumstances, it was not appropriate for the State government to provide government employment to the families of those who died in the tragedy. He urged the High Court to stay the government’s decision and requested that the matter be taken up as an urgent case.

The Bench, however, declined the request for urgent listing.

The judges observed that since the matter relating to the Karur stampede was already pending before the Supreme Court, the petitioner could raise the issue before the apex court itself. They further stated that if a proper petition was filed before the High Court, it would be taken up for hearing in the normal course of proceedings.

With these observations, the Madurai Bench refused to treat the plea as an urgent matter.
