Facebook changes its corporate name to Meta, introduces ‘Metaverse’ concept

Facebook, the revolutionary and controversial social media giant that has billions of users has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a major rebranding exercise and the new name was announced by its co-founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg during the Connect 2021 event.

In an official statement, the company said that Meta will bring “together our apps and technologies under one new company brand”. and that Meta would better “encompass” what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR), reports BBC.

However, the change will not apply to the company’s individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, but only to the parent company that owns them.

Zuckerberg unveiled the company’s plans to build a “metaverse” during a company’s live-streamed virtual and augmented reality conference and said that Meta would be an online world where people can game, work, and communicate in a virtual environment, using VR headsets and declared that the existing brand could not “possibly represent” everything that the company is doing.

Right now our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything we’re doing today, let alone in the future. Over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards,” Zuckerberg said.”

To reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I’m proud to share that our company is now Meta,” he said.

“From now on, we will be metaverse-first, not Facebook-first. That means that over time you won’t need a Facebook account to use our other services. As our new brand starts showing up in our products, I hope people around the world come to know the Meta brand and the future we stand for,” he added.

Foreign Secretary Shringla hopes Covaxin will soon get approval as PM Modi heads for G20 summit

During a presser, when asked about the delay in granting Emergency Use Listing (EUL) for Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said India is hopeful of getting approval soon.

According to Shringla, the regulatory body was concerned and had put some questions to Bharat Biotech and approval for the vaccine should come if the queries are responded to effectively.

“It is a technical and regulatory group. The emergency authorisation by the WHO is based on technical considerations and we are carefully following up the discussions at the WHO. We are hopeful that Covaxin will get approval soon,” Shringla said.

He also added, “India has proposed to its partner countries, primarily countries that Indian citizens normally travel to, that we should have a mutual (mechanism) that you recognise our vaccine certification and we will mutually recognise your vaccine certification,”.

“Now the advantage of this is that as we keep adding new vaccines to our stock of national vaccines, you do not need to go to every country to try and get recognition. You recognise the certification that we issue, you recognise its integrity and we will give you mutual treatment,” he said.

The foreign secretary said a number of countries have already agreed to the mutually acceptable COVID-19 vaccine certification framework proposal. He, however, did not name the countries. “So we have achieved some reciprocal arrangements with a number of countries. We are working with all of our partner countries to have similar arrangements. It will simplify international travel, it will normalise international travel,” Shringla said.

However, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads for the G20 summit, this mechanism could be helpful in the recovering from the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. “Business travellers, tourists which contribute to the recovery of economies will be greatly benefitted from this simplified international travel regime that we are proposing and we have taken it up with the G20, we have taken it up bilaterally, we have taken it up in plurilateral forums,” he said.

“We will continue to advocate this as a means of better and easier access to citizens travelling all over the world,” Shringla added.

On India proposing waivers by the World Trade Organisation on Covid-related medical products including vaccines, he said, “We have advocated for technology transfer and diversification of supply chain and production hubs to ensure affordable and equitable access to COVID-19 disease control tools,” he said.

“I am happy to share that G20 has recognised extensive vaccination as a global public good and I think that is where discussions in the G20 will be relevant,” he added.

New Israel ambassador to India optimistic about new West Asia Quad

The new Israel ambassador to New Delhi, Naor Gilon has said, “Cooperation is never against something, it is always for something,” during this his first interaction with the media.

As per the protocol, Gilon presented his credentials to President Ram Nath Kovind yesterday (October 28), and was very optimistic about the formation of the new Quad, with the US, India, Israel, and the UAE as the four members which have now been dubbed as West Asia Quad.

Gilon said that things have improved a lot after the diplomatic recognition by the UAE, but there is still a serious threat posed by Iran and its nuclear ambition. He said anti-Iran sentiments is one of the most important factors binding the US, Israel, and the UAE.

In his interaction with Indian media, Gilon also said Israel perceived Iran as a “real threat” with its nuclear capability and extremist ideology and his country take these threats seriously.

However, India has strong multilateral ties with Iran and has vested interests in the Chabahar port in Iran developed by India as an important infrastructural project for both countries to access not just Afghanistan and the untapped markets of Central Asia as part of the grand International North-South Transit Corridor.

But during the Trump presidency, India was compelled to stop imports of crude oil from Iran, which caused stress in ties. But it is not all India’s fault because Iran for years dragged its feet in this project and now Tehran is slowly easing India out of infrastructural projects.

There is growing resistance to developing the rail line from Chabahar to Zahedan or a stake in the Farzad-B gas field, which was discovered by India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

This is why many see the new West Asia quad as a much-needed synergy between the four countries as this grouping can have a serious impact on economic and infrastructural development in this region

Gilon said we must facilitate company-to-company cooperation in these areas, rather than at the government-to-government level which was a clear indication of red tape.

India and the Israeli military right now are participating in the Blue Flag exercise in Israel, and the UAE is an observer but has also sent its soldiers to be part of the exercise.

Woke ‘secular’ vocalist TM Krishna pulls up Sehwag over Pak coach’s Hindumisic comments

Alleged musician TM Krishna while offering his two cents on the Hindumisic comments made by Pakistani cricket coach Waqar Younis, needlessly pulled up former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag who had called out the hypocrisy of people advocating firecracker ban as some places in India saw incidents of firecrackers getting burst over Pakistan’s victory in the recent India vs Pakistan match.

Former Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis said on live TV that Pakistani player Mohammad Rizwan doing Namaz amid Hindus was his ‘favourite part’ of India-Pakistan match.

This had caused a stir with many calling out the blatant Hindumisia exhibited by Waqar Younis. Cricket commentators like Harsha Bhogle too called out the hate spewed and for communalising the sport.

The outrage even made Waqar Younis to tender an apology.

https://twitter.com/waqyounis99/status/1453109128755232772

Virendar Sehwag on the other hand had tweeted that firecrackers get banned only during Diwali but parts of India celebrated Pakistan’s victory with firecrackers lashing out at the hypocrisy of the left-liberal elite and other wokes who virtue signal about crackers causing pollution calling for its ban.

Reacting to these two events, alleged carnatic vocalist TM Krishna in an attempt to come across as secular put a tweet saying that both Virender Sehwag and Waqar Younis should be packed off to Mars for their comments.

Many on Twitter called out TM Krishna for his including Sehwag’s name in the tweet as the former cricketer didn’t name any religion.

When many pointed out what was wrong with Sehwag’s statement, TM Krishna didn’t budge and tried to justify saying that Sehwag’s comments too were a strain of bigotry.

TM Krishna who claims himself to be carnatic vocalist is a vocal supporter of communist ideology and is known for espousing his woke-ness while targeting the ruling BJP at the Centre.

India successfully test fires Agni 5 intercontinental ballistic missile

On Wednesday (October 27), India successfully test-fired a surface to a surface ballistic missile, Agni-5, from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast giving India strike capability to hit any target in China. The missile was test-fired at 7.50 pm and it used a three-stage solid-fuelled engine with a strike range of over 5,000-km with a very high degree of accuracy. With the successful completion of this test, India’s policy to have a “credible minimum deterrence” has received a further boost and it underpins the commitment to ‘No First Use’.In June this year successfully test-fired a completely new high-tech nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Agni Prime that was carried out from the launching complex IV of Abdul Kalam Island.“Various telemetry and radar stations positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile. The missile has followed textbook trajectory, meeting all mission objectives with a high level of accuracy,” a statement issued by the DRDO had stated at the time. Agni-P was the most advanced missile in the Agni series, which was developed with the cutting-edge technologies used in 4000-km range Agni-IV and 5000-km Agni-V missiles.Agni-1 to 5 missiles are designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). At present, apart from the Agni-5, other Agni missiles that India has in its armory are: Agni-1 with a 700-km range, Agni-2 with a 2,000-km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2,500 km to more than 3,500 km range. However, some defense and geostrategic experts like Brahma Chellaney think India may have flight a MIRVed version. In a tweet Chellaney said, “India has successfully developed the road-mobile, over 5,000-km-range Agni-5 missile with a 1.5-ton warhead as part of its nuclear deterrent. It is now working to equip it with multiple independently targetable warheads. Today’s flight test might have involved a MIRVed version,”. The multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) is an exoatmospheric ballistic missile payload containing several warheads, with the capability to hit a different target. At present, only the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and India are currently confirmed to possess functional MIRV missile systems.Click here to subscribe to The Commune on Telegram and get the best stories of the day delivered to you personally.

In a first, Saudi private jet lands in Israel airport

In a significant development, for the first time, an Israeli private jet landed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday (October 26) morning, per KAN news just a day after the first flight from Saudi Arabia landed in Israel.

After the signing of the Abraham Accords, this is the first public flight from Israel that has ever landed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, report JPost.

On Monday the first flight from Saudi Arabia, an Emirati 737 Royal Jet landed in Israel in Ben-Gurion airport.

Such development will now go a long way in improving regional ties for Israel as the historic accord has helped normalize ties with four nations — UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan.

However, there are no commercial flights between Saudi Arabia and Israel, as the two states share no official diplomatic relations, but still, this is a considerable advancement in Saudi-Israeli relations, as both nations finally opened their airspaces to each other just last year.

Since its independence in 1948, Israel has been a nation under siege surrounded by countries that wanted to wipe it from the face of the earth. But after the 2020 normalization of ties with Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco, and the UAE and the subsequent opening of airspaces to Israeli flights to these nations, there has been a marked improvement with it comes to national security.

Not so long ago, El Al’s planes had to follow a long, winding route to Mumbai in order to avoid Saudi airspace, adding roughly two hours putting the Israeli carrier at a huge disadvantage to competitors, who flew shorter distances.

However, Israel still has to deal with many nations that do not allow direct overflight and they are Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen.

Idols at Siruvachur Amman temple found broken once again, HR&CE remains mute spectator

With not even a month having passed after the attack on the Siruvachur Amman Temple located in Perambalur district, idols at the temple have once again been found broken with the vandals inflicting far more serious damage.

Madurakaliamman temple is a famous temple located at Siruvachchur in Perambalur district. The Goddess is said to be the family deity of Kanchi Sankaracharya.

The Periyasamy – Chelliyamman Temple and the Sengamalayar Temple are associated temples of the Madurakaliamman temple and fall under the control of Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department.

Earlier on October 7, many of the idols at the Periyasamy – Chelliyamman Temple and the Sengamalayar Temple including that of Amman, Maduraiveeran, the Saptakannis, etc were found displaced and broken by miscreants.

This time, the idols of horses, Goddess Amman, and other Gods were found broken. Many of the idols had their heads cut off which indicates that the act has been done to deliberately hurt the Hindus.

The Hindu Munnani immediately plunged into action and staged a road roko on Wednesday (October 27) against the administration’s apathy.

May be an image of ‎standing and ‎text that says "‎Jungor பெரம்பலூரில் தொடர்ந்து இந்து கோவில் சாமி சிலைகள் உடைப்பு அறநிலையதுறை காவல்துறையை கண்டித்து சிறுவாச்சூரில் இந்துமுன்னணி சார்பில் நடைபெற்ற சாலை மறியல்... பொறுப்பாளர்கள் கைது... FOLLOW US hindumunnani ه hindumunnanni.org‎"‎‎

Many Hindu activists have been questioning the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) departments and its minister P. Sekar Babu for their silence and inaction on the matter.

Earlier a crowdfunding campaign was launched to repair the damages at the temple.

Netizens have been lashing out saying that incidents of attack on temples have been on the rise ever since the DMK came to power.

The Preachings Of Palani Baba: Delving Deep Into the Mind Of The Rabid Radicalizer – Part 1

Much has been written about the process and methods of radicalization of Muslims in this age of ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Intellectuals and politicians alike are eager to lay the mistake at the door of Saudi Wahhabism, funded by oil money, radicalizing by appropriating the tools of modern technology, namely, the Internet and mobile technologies.

A rare few are aware of earlier radicalization programs that were carried out in other places and times.

Here, we attempt to bring to you the thoughts and techniques of radicalization by Palani Baba, a charismatic radical preacher, who travelled the length and breadth of Tamil Nadu in the 1980s and 1990s. He was murdered in 1997, presumably by a group of Hindu activists.

Our attempt is made with several aims in mind

– To show the clarity of thought and singularity of purpose that the jihadi preacher has.

– To demonstrate that the approach to radicalization from someone like Palani Baba, whose main work was in times before the Internet and mobile telephones, when road networks were not as well developed in interior Tamil Nadu as today, and when the general populace were less literate, less connected, less informed and far less prosperous than today’s Tamil Nadu, is the same as any Internet Jihadi of today.

– While we do not have access to actual records of how Islamic radical preachers worked in the time of Qing China, such as Ma Mingxin or the more recent Malabar Lahalla in Bharat, here we have access to recorded speeches. This will serve to demonstrate the historic continuity in Islamic radicalization programs.

– To demonstrate how Islamic radicalization is not something that needs the conditions of discrimination, poverty and misery to happen, but is just as likely to occur in times of peace and prosperity among a relatively well-integrated group of Muslims.

– To prove that Islamic radicalism is not a break-away concept, nor a sudden development, but something intrinsic and historical to Islam itself.

The Times And The Context

In the 1980s, large parts of rural Tamil Nadu were connected with the outside world by means of roads, radio and newspapers. Television was appearing in all middle-class homes, even in small towns, and the ubiquitous public telephone – colloquially called ‘STD Booth’ – was beginning to spread even in predominantly agricultural villages.

Tamil Muslims were a small community of Sunnis south of Cuddalore, and another small community of Urdu-speaking Muslims in the North. The Nawab of Arcot was a largely ceremonial Muslim leader, being a Shiite, a sub-minority within the Tamil Muslim community. There hadn’t been any Islamic kingdom of note for 200 years. Even otherwise, large parts of Tamilnadu had been ruled by native Hindu rulers or Telugu and Marathi rulers.

Tamil Muslims over centuries had integrated into the larger Tamil community. Dress, food, marriage customs and language were very close to the large population of Hindus they were in the midst of. The charismatic leader at the time of Independence, Muhammad Ismail, known as Quaid-e-Millath, had left behind a legacy of educational institutions and a policy of co-operation with the Dravidian parties. Muslims were and still are small traders, businessmen and there was a reasonable-sized elite of professionals – notably lawyers and teachers.

By the ‘80s, many youth had begun to travel to Gulf countries for work, where they came in contact with oil wealth, the piety of the Arab elite. They became relatively more prosperous than their Hindu neighbours, so the radicalization was not fuelled by resentment over comparatively poor living conditions, as is commonly held in other instances.

The Man And His Methods

In this mileu, stepped in a charismatic preacher – Palani Baba. Not much could be ascertained of his antecedents, his training and education. It is possible he did not disclose much in order to protect his family, given the dangerous nature of the tasks he was carrying out. His speeches give clues to a background as a wealthy landowner from the Western Kongu belt of TN. However, he seems to have travelled extensively in Bharat and in the Gulf. His speeches are political and are largely addressed to the momin (Muslim believer). They are a textbook lesson in demagoguery. By turns, he berates his audience, turns up their anger by showing contempt and then forgives them like a father would forgive errant children. Finally, he ends with a touching few words on their innocence.

The language is simple everyday Tamil, heavily utilizing Muslim theological terms. On occasion, he breaks into the dramatic hyperbole so beloved of Dravidian political speakers and which any Tamil political speaker must use, his audience being so used to that style

A short translation of one of his speeches follows. It has been interpolated and summarized extensively, since the original is a long, rambling monologue lasting hours.

On Infidels

He begins with a classification of unbelievers – mushrikeen, munafiqeen and kufr.

Iblis (Lucifer) was one of the highest of Allah’s creations, but he was cast down since he failed to accept Allah’s placing Adam above him. The only reason he fell was his challenge to Allah’s authority.

Thus, a Muslim who claims to be a Muslim, but does not follow Allah or His Messenger’s instructions is deemed to be a munafiq (hypocrite) and that makes him no better than a kaffir or infidel.

A kaffir or mushrik is as good as a Shaitan (Devil) and is condemned to eternal damnation. A munafiq deserves no better.

On Munafiqeen

So, what are the things that entail nifaq (hypocrisy) among Tamil Muslims?

– The practice of taking dowry from the bride’s family, which is against Muslim custom of giving a meher (bride price) and conducting simple marriages

– Conducting processions for the graves of auwaliya (saints). One can stop at the grave of a wali, pray to Allah for deliverance and for oneself to be made into a wali, but worshipping the wali himself or his relics is shirk (polytheism).

– Having exorcisms performed for mushriks and asking dua for mushriks, a practice forbidden even to the Prophets.

– Carrying on disputes over practices and taking it outside the community is tantamount to quarrelling. A Muslim that quarrels on questions of practice is as good as a kaffir (note this is an interpretation of one of the Prophet’s sayings – ‘If one calls the other a kaffir, then one of them is’ – Sahih Muslim 80). This thinking is also the basis of Salafi-Takfiri school, which is determined to be the school behind such groups as the ISIS.

On conversion

Target scheduled caste people in the villages that are poor. Get their daughters married to boys from well-off and respectable Muslim families, as per Muslim custom. Then set them targets for converting people in their neighbourhood

He refers to how even Jayalalitha was forced to retract the anti-conversion law. He then speaks how he and a bunch of his jihadis got orders from the Collector to provide police protection when he converted many families in a single village.

This is most probably an empty boast, as was his wont, but it is very effective in giving his audience the confidence to try something by themselves.

Seemingly rambling, he jumps to how he got boys from his group out on bail when riots broke out, legally ‘fixed’ an MLA and a couple of senior policemen.

Again, this could be exaggeration of what happened, but in an era with few TV channels and no Internet, he is very convincing, especially to people from small villages.

He has now moved from berating people on their compromises with Islam to reminding them of their duty in converting people, and helping them overcome their mental discomfort in carrying on conversion.

Mobilizing And Agitating

In Devipattanam, a Muniswaran temple had been encroached and replaced with a mosque. He mentions how he had the original land records stolen and made it impossible for the district authorities to prove original ownership.

Next, he mentions how he had consolidated jamaats and mosque administration across districts. A simple rule he gives – mobilize 500 representatives for 5 lakh Muslims in a region. Any time there is trouble, go as 500 people to the authorities.

Finally, he speaks on the need to get constituencies restructured so that constituencies can become Muslim majority, to get more representatives in Parliament. He also mentions that Muslim majority constituencies should not become reserved

Call To Arms

Towards the end, he gives a rousing call to arms, including the all-too-familiar claim that 20 Muslim men are as good as 200 kaffir men. Rely on tawakkul (trust in God’s plan). Common Islamic terms of calling man-made laws and institutions ‘corrupt’ and to co-operate with authorities only as far as it does not contradict Islam.

Notes

The theology, terminology and didactic style is familiar to us, today, exposed as we are to the Islamic world, but must have profoundly affected some parts of his audience. He starts with the low-hanging fruit, social evils like dowry, but decries them not as being evil on their own, but being evil since they go against Allah’s commandments. From here to full-body burkas and towheed is a short distance.

As seen in other instances, like in Qing China, it is possible to turn a relatively well-assimilated population of Muslims radical within a short period of time. The core teachings carry seeds of this radicalization. All it needs is a charismatic few leaders

In a concluding part, we will translate another speech which is less focused on consolidated the faithful and more towards aggression against a kaffir State, which is by definition illegitimate in the eyes of Islam.
