Dalit families in Arumbakkam face eviction without proper resettlement, self-proclaimed voices of Dalits look the other way

More than 150 families at Radhakrishnan Nagar in Arumbakkam locality of Chennai are at the risk of losing the roofs over their head as the Chennai Corporation goes on an eviction drive.

The second phase of eviction began on July 30 under the Cooum river eco-restoration project of the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT). Of the 243 families, only 93 families have received re-allotment orders to KP Park in Pulianthope after the residents resisted shifting to Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenements in Perumbakkam. The rest are yet to be resettled who are also expected to be given re-allotment orders to KP Park.

On top of this, many families (around 21) have claimed that their names are missing in the re-allotment list thereby putting them at the risk of losing their houses and pushed to the streets.

Despite their pitiable plight due to the mismanagement of the incumbent government, their voices remain unheard as the media friendly to the DMK establishment looked the other way. However opposition parties ensured that their plight comes to light through social media. It was only after much hue and cry from the public that Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol. Thirumavalavan visited Radhakrishnan Nagar ‘to listen to the concerns’ of the residents living there and ‘console them’. He had received petitions from them and had later met Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi IAS regarding the matter.

Naam Tamilar Katchi Seeman too visited to listen to the concerns of the people residing on the encroached land.

On the other hand, media outlets like The News Minute and other prominent Tamil journalists who claim to be the voice of the voiceless have been mute about the issue. The News Minute, a left-leaning digital news media portal considered friendly to the ruling DMK, which frequently goes out of the way and publishes articles on isolated incident of violence against Dalits, has not even published a single article on the matter.

Islamic teacher sentenced to 11 years for sodomizing minor in Karnataka

A special court in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka sentenced an Islamic cleric, who was teaching in a Madrasa, to 11 years in prison and a fine of Rs 30,000, after being found guilty of sodomising and threatening a 13-year-old minor boy.

The special court judge N Krishnaiah ordered the district legal services authority to pay Rs 5 lakh to the boy as compensation.

Mufti Musharaf, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was teaching at a madrassa near Amalapur in Tumakuru, Karnataka, in 2015 when he sodomized one of his students. The incident was only uncovered two days later when the victim’s mother visited him at the Madarsa.

When the mother found out what had happened to her kid, she was embarrassed, and the boy cried when he saw his mother. She filed a complaint against Mufti Musharaf with Karnataka police after her son told her about his suffering.

Following the complaint, the police filed a case against the Maulana under Indian Penal Code sections 377 (unnatural sex) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and arrested him. Both the accused and the victim were then taken to the hospital for medical tests, which revealed that the youngster had been sodomized.

According to special public prosecutor GV Gayathri, the Islamic teacher received harsh punishment because not only the boy, but eleven other eyewitnesses testified against the Madarsa teacher during his trial, but the statements of the minor boy and his mother were extremely crucial for the prosecution in proving the Musharaf’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Public prosecutor GV Gayathri said that Mufti Musharaf asked the minor boy to help him book a train ticket to his native place in Uttar Pradesh and took him to the railway station as he was not conversant with the local language- Kannada.

Musharaf fabricated a scenario in which he told the boy that his motorcycle had run out of petrol and that they would have to spend the night in a nearby hotel because the boy, who believed his teacher, was unaware of what was going to happen.

The special prosecutor was quoted by TOI as saying, “In the hotel’s register, he [Musharaf] had mentioned his name as well as that of the boy. After committing the crime, Musharaf took the boy on his bike the next morning and dropped him back at the madrassa. He returned to the lodge and vacated the room. The hotel ledger mentioned there were two persons; a man and a boy while entering the room, and only the man was present while vacating it.”

“Don’t want to jeopardize my career in sports,” Monty Panesar pulls out of Kashmir Premier League following BCCI threat to ban participants

Former England spin bowler Monty Panesar has withdrawn his name from upcoming Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) league after the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) made it very clear to former South Africa cricketer Herschelle Gibbs that in the future he would not get any assignments in India.

Pakistan which never fails to put the spotlight on Kashmir had planned a cricket tournament in PoK. However, the BCCI made it very clear that anyone who participates will suffer consequences.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) threatened the BCCI, claiming that it will take the matter to the ICC, but the Indian cricket board responded by saying that they are “welcome to go to ICC.”

Now, Monty Panesar in an exclusive interview with Republic Bharat announced that he will not be participating in Pakistan’s sham ‘Kashmir Premier League’ and also warned the other participating players to think about the consequences first before taking part in the Pakistan Occupied ‘Kashmir Premier League’.

Panesar in his interview said, “I had the opportunity to play in the ‘KPL’ and I thought I could play again. However, I was advised that the BCCI is telling players who will play in the ‘Kashmir Premier League’ might face consequences. As I am just starting my career in sports media I want to work in India. Therefore I thought it would be better to not play in the ‘Kashmir Premier League’. I don’t wanna come between cricket and politics,”.

“I am a player I was just seeing this as an opportunity to resume playing gradually and make a comeback in cricket but after seeing the consequences, it is too risky for me to play in the ‘KPL’. Therefore, I thought it would be best if I don’t play in the league” added Monty Panesar.

The Kashmir Premier League, which was announced in December 2020, is an attempt to host a tournament between five teams representing cities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and one team representing “overseas” Kashmiris.

Shahid Afridi has been named the captain of the Rawalakot Hawks. In an interview, Afridi revealed that after tribals invaded Kashmir in 1948, his grandfather indulged in looting, pillaging, and murdering. International Pakistani cricketers such as Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Muhammad Hafeez, and Fakhar Zaman will play for the other teams in the franchise tournament.

Many former international players were invited to play or be a part of the broadcast, but after the BCCI, which has clout with all other cricketing nations, many withdrew their names, including Monty Panesar, who now wants opportunities in India.

J&K police: “No security clearance to stone pelters for passports or government jobs”

Six Killed, Four Injured In J&K Terrorist Attack

The Union territory of Jammu & Kashmir cracked down on anti-nationals and stone-pelters on Sunday (July 31), issuing orders prohibiting passport clearance and the provision of government jobs, among other restrictions.

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and Special Branch Kashmir have been directed to deny security clearance to those involved in stone-pelting and other crimes committed against the state and all the digital evidence and police records will be taken into consideration.

Previously, the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Verification of Character and Antecedents) Instructions, 1997, were amended by the Union Territory administration to need an acceptable CID report in order to get a government job.

According to an exclusive report by The Indian Express, it is now compulsory to disclose whether any family member or close relative is associated with any political party or organization, or has participated in any political activity, or has had links with a foreign mission or organization, or any prescribed/ prohibited/ banned organization such as the Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to the new amendment, in-service employees who require re-verification from the CID must provide details of their postings and promotions since their initial appointment, as well as the jobs of their parents, spouse, children and stepchildren, parents-in-law, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration had also announced to issue a domicile certificate to the husband of a native woman.

In 2020, the Union cabinet approved the Jammu & Kashmir (Adaptation of State Laws) Second Order, 2020 issued under section 96 of Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The order modified the applicability of Domicile conditions to all levels of jobs in the Union territory of Jammu & Kashmir under the Jammu & Kashmir Civil Services (Decentralisation and Recruitment) Act.

However, the most significant change in rules in this Union Territory is that any person residing in Jammu and Kashmir for at least 15 years can be considered to be a domicile of the Union Territory.

COVID third wave to hit India in August, Delta variant supposedly spreads as chickenpox

india corona virus covishield price vaccine

As per a report led by Mathukumalli Vidyasagar and Manindra Agrawal at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad and Kanpur, India may see another rise in Covid-19 cases as soon as August.

The study has stated that the third wave peaking with less than 100,000 infections a day in the best-case scenario or nearly 150,000 in the worst scenario and the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, may peak in October, reports Hindustan Times.

However, The third wave of Covid-19 is unlikely to be as severe as the second wave when India reported 400,000-plus daily cases, and researchers forecast that this time the surge in Covid-19 cases will be less is based on a mathematical model.

In May, Vidyasagar, a professor at IIT Hyderabad said told Bloomberg, “Our predictions are that the peak will come within a few days. As per current projections, we should hit 20,000 cases per day by the end of June. We will revise this as needed,”.

However, his prediction that the wave would peak by the middle of last month was incorrect but it turns out his prediction was wrong because of incorrect parameters as “the pandemic was changing rapidly, even wildly, until about a week ago.”

India on Sunday (August 1) reported 41,831 Covid-19 cases and 541 deaths as the Centre cautioned 10 states, including Kerala, Maharashtra, and northeastern regions, as there is a rise in infections and asked them to take necessary steps to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Experts have also warned that the Delta variant of the coronavirus can easily spread as chickenpox and what is even more threatening is that it can be passed on by vaccinated people leading to a surge in infections.

Kerala rape survivor moves SC seeking permission to marry convicted Christian pastor

On Saturday, a rape survivor from Kerala moved the Supreme Court seeking permission to marry former Catholic priest Robin Vadakkumchery who is the convict in the case.

Vadakkumchery was sentenced to 20 years in prison after a judge found him guilty of raping and impregnating a minor in February 2019. Following this, the Church took procedures to remove him from the priesthood, and in 2020, he was excommunicated.

Vadakkuncheril worked as a priest in a church, and the girl was from a Catholic home. The girl, who had just completed her Class 10 examinations at the time, went to Vadakkuncheril’s parsonage for some parish data-entry work in May 2016. The priest took the girl to his bedroom and raped her in the afternoon, while the other girls were away. After telling her not to tell anyone about the incident, he allowed her to go home. In front of her family, the girl remained silent. Every day, she went to school and mass at the local church. No one seemed to notice that she had become pregnant as a result of the rape.

The girl suffered significant abdominal pain on February 7, 2017, and was taken to a local hospital, where she was directed to Christu Raja Hospital, Koothuparamba, in Kannur, which is run by nuns of the Sacred Heart Congregation. The girl was discovered to be pregnant during the examination, and she gave birth as a result. She told her mother about the incident at the parsonage, and the family took it up with Vadakkuncheril, who promised to cover the Rs 30,000 medical bill.

Vadakkunchery was arrested in Kochi in February 2017 after a series of failed cover-up attempts. The rape victim has now petitioned the Supreme Court to marry the Christian priest who raped her. The court agreed to hear the case on Monday (Aug 2).

“I will slit your throat,” DMK minister’s shocking threat to party union secretaries

A video of DMK Rural Industries Minister saying, “I will slit your throat,” in a party meeting in Kanchipuram has gone viral on social media.

A meeting of DMK general members was held last Wednesday in Madurantakam, Kanchipuram district. The meeting was attended by Rural Industries Minister Anbarasan, in which he said,” This meeting is very important. Our government has won the last assembly elections and is in power. But we have no MLAs in this constituency.”

“It is our responsibility to make you sit as local body representatives in the coming local body elections. Local body representatives should be our party persons to take the programs brought by the government to the people. At the same time we have already told the party head to not give important posts to AIADMK members who jumped the ship to DMK,” he added.

In addition, he stated that local body elections will be held in September and that all cadres should work for the victory of whoever the leadership chooses to run for the seat.

He further stated that if the DMK office bearers do not win the upcoming local body elections in September, he will slit their throats.

The minister’s speech came under severe criticism from netizens who said that it was clearly unacceptable for a people’s representative to speak in this manner.

Canal goes missing in Dindigul dist after DMK’s rise to power

Farmers have lodged a complaint at the police station in Vedasandur in Dindigul district, alleging that a canal that had been set aside and maintained at a cost of ₹60 lakh rupees has disappeared within two months of the DMK coming to power.

Venkatraman Iyengar Dam is located across the Kiriyampatti River near Vedasandur. The irrigation canal leading from here was desilted for 3 kms under the AIADMK regime last year at a cost of ₹25 lakh rupees under the Kudimaramatthu scheme.

However, farmers have complained that the location of the irrigation canal has gone unnoticed as a private spinning mill near Kottaiyur has encroached and levelled the canal.

Similarly, they allege that the left irrigation canal leading from the Lakshmanampatti dam was desilted last year at a cost of ₹35 lakh rupees, but now houses have been built encroaching and levelling the irrigation canal in Ayyanar town.

Farmers have complained that officials from the PWD and Water Resources department have not taken any action despite multiple complaints raised in the last two months and hence the farmers have now registered a police complaint.
